RGIJN vs Miller

Post by Miller »

Same settings and HR's as my other recently started game vs borner, except that this time I am playing as the Allies.

Scn 19, 200% ship commitment both sides, Allied damage contol on etc......

No night air ops
4E bombers min 10k feet
No sub invasions
Max 6 PT boats per hex
Max 3 F4U sqds active at one time/None on carriers other than Bunker Hill generic sqd.

This scenario is always tough on the Allied player early in the game, not much you can do other shuffle units around and wait for your LBA sqds to appear and build up. I captured Port Moresby on the 22nd of May against borner, can Ralf do it any quicker???

WAR!!! - In Paradise....

The first few days already saw some decent action as the enemy appears to be quite aggressive. His lurking subs seem to be omni-present. One of our (currently few) tankers went down after heroic efforts that saved the precious load of fuel-oil from the recently seized fields of the Dutch East Indies. Another is loitering in the Rabaul - Kavieng area. Our bombers reported at least two hits at one S-class boat off The Shortlands last afternoon.

B-17s are operating out of Port Moresby and bombed our anchorage, but caused only slight casualties.

In the meantime, the overall progress is fine since Imperial forces outright took Guadalcanal, Buna and Gili-Gili.

Last night, IJGHQ back home radioed a lengthy catalogue of reinforcements scheduled for immediate transfer down into the Southern Area. This war will intensify very soon... There are rumors that even HIJMS YAMATO with the C-in-C aboard is going to sail towards Truk atoll. This will boost our morale even more, leaving no doubt about our glory victory!

two weeks went by, with mixed results. Overall situation is satisfying, but the enemy sunk some transports embarking minor troops when his carriers dashed forward to the southern Solomons and hit a small convoy... We´ll retaliate soon!

In the meantime his subs keep on beeing busy, harassing our shipping lanes. Accordingly we upgraded our barges with some weapons.... Hopefully the galley was hit and the burger-hungry crew urging for immediate return to base! [:D]

Summary of the first month: Ralf made the usual early grabs, my subs sink the CL Tatsuta and a Tanker. I sent the Lex and Yorktown for a dash north under the cover of bad weather and they found and sank 4 medium sized transports and a MSW just north of Tulagi. No Allied ship losses to report.

Late in the month I managed to get a large resupply convoy, covered by my CVs in and out of PM unharmed. The garrison there now has more than enough supplies to fight to the death with[;)]

All in all a good start for the Allies, however all his big boys will be arriving over the next few weeks..........

finally our patrolling bombers could send one of the annoying allied submarines down to the bottom, while another one was reported hit too, trailing oil...

Paul operates his forces very skillfully, so the Empire is hardly getting hold of the enemy yet. Port Moresby is still untouched so far, but this issue will be dealt with soon.

sub chase

Post by RGIJN »

somehow we need to get rid of them. It´s not funny to have these pesky underwater craft lurking around at the approaches of Port Moresby.....
Moreover it´s low-budget training for our pilots, even more so in anticipation of more action soon. IJGHQ assesses the chance for some kinda battle "high" in the next two months.[X(]

the enemy was again lucky and one of his subs slipped into the Shortlands anchorage, sinking one of our seaplane tenders...
However, we retaliated with the immediate destruction of this submarine (S-43).

Not much action otherwise, but operation "MO" is looming at the horizon.

action off Port Moresby

Post by RGIJN »

two of our TFs sent out to shell PM met some allied DD force, obviously bringing some troops & supplies. Two enemy destroyers sunk, several others badly mauled. 2 IJN DDs took light damage as well. But the shore bombardment seemed to have turned the Allied base into shambles...

During daylight, our searchplanes spotted even more US naval movements towards PM.

Last week we landed some major parts of the IJA at Buna and they´re on the march over the Owen Stanleys. Soon they will appear at the doorstep of PM to wipe out the defenders.

another sub sent to the bottom

Post by RGIJN »

one of our MLs reported a sub attack in the GG vicinity, fortunately the torpedoes missed their aim. However, we sent a patrol force of some DDs out to chase this marplot down. With the very aggresive CDR Semba Shigeo aboard YUGUMO in command they succeeded....

Due to heavy losses my subs are withdrawn until further notice.

Otherwise things are going well. B17s flying from Aus have sunk at least five APs in the last few days. All my carriers are in theatre with upgraded airgroups, ready to strike if an opportunity presents itself......

Allied forces, northbound

Post by RGIJN »

The Allies have undertaken some expedition into the northern Hebrides, establishing a base there...

We immediately sent a FT TF to the spot, which met some enemy ships and a minor battle commenced. The dutch CLAA and three DDs plus one APD were reported sunk. Another APD struck a mine.
No own casualties, aside from two lifeboats aboard flagship CA TAKAO.

Not for the first time in this game poor recon let me down, if I'd seen those boys coming my FT fleet would have been recalled.

I recently completed a level 1 airfield at Gavigamana, which Ralf seems to want to steal from me.......Oh well it will make a nice training base for my bombers[;)]

the enemy launched quite an audacious operation today... he sent FT TFs towards PM and GG simultanously. Both garrisons are undefended by INF troops, so I guess his troops (about one RGT each) will seize them soon. However the question is at which cost and how long they will be able to stay....

At least mines and Betty torpedoes took some toll already.

major carrier battle...

Post by RGIJN »

...just south of Rossel Island. Both fleets came pretty close (one hex!) after the USN CVs reacted. The majority of the allied strikes went in unescorted, leading right into desaster. Big E and WASP reported sunk, HORNET & YORKTOWN should follow suit tonight.

IJN suffered only heavy damage on CVL RYUJO. 460 USN a/c shot down.

However, the enemy captured PM & GG.
