Thanks to Misconduct for posting the information about the new Medal of Honor recipient.

Okay, gents, without resorting to the Internet or other sources, who can name the first enlisted Marine to receive the Medal of Honor in World War II?

What was the location/battle?

I think only a single MoH was received for this particular engagement, but there were a bunch of Navy Cross recipients.

From watching the Pacific I'm pretty certain it was John Basilone, Guadalcanal at Alligator Creek--> (wrong battle)

Good guess, but incorrect. Basilone received the MoH for his bravery in battle on October 24, 1942 on Guadalcanal.

Speaking of John Basilone , anyone have good pictures of the USS Basilone from the 50's I'm making a Christmas gift for a sailor who was aboard during the (you guessed it) 50's, thanks!

Wake would be a good guess, but incorrect.

Che200 is right - this recipient received the Medal of Honor for heroism during the Makin Island raid, I think August 17, 1942. He was a sergeant, not a corporal.

1st Lt. George Cannon, USMC, and Capt. Henry Elrod, USMC, but caneorebel said first enlisted Marine.

Didn't look it up, but asked Jeremy, so that's almost like cheating.

I was doing some research a while back into US Marine Raiders and Paratroop units and the Makin Raid and remembered that a corporal/sergeant decided to stay behind to help the others escape. Very Gutsy and very interesting story.
