Corrupted Colours in Full Screen on Win 7 64 bit

Post by noguaranteeofsanity »

Running Harpoon ANW Ultimate Edition in full screen mode on Windows 7 64 bit, results in corrupted colours, with pinks, oranges and other bright colours, replacing the usual greys. Initially appears fine, but once a few menu items have been selected, the colours become corrupt.

Tried taking a screen grab in the game and a screen shot, but neither show the corrupted colours.

DxDiag attached.

Likewise. Except I don't need to select anything before the colours 'flip'. The intro video with the 3D 'Harpoon' text is screwed up too, although on 1st appearance the game screen occurs normal. Same thing with all the default palates, all are different both from each other and from what they should be (e.g. 'greyscale' is a vomit inducing combination of green, yellow and brown!)

Windows 7 Home Premium, GeForce 9800 GT with latest drivers.

There is a known issue with games that use a 256 color palette running full-screen in Windows Vista and Windows 7. This is not a Harpoon issue, but a Microsoft issue. Other games, such as WinSPMBT and WinSPWW2 by Shrapnel Games, have similar issues and their current solution is to run in windowed mode.

Fair enough. Unfortunately, though, we were both only trying full screen because of mouse pointer problems in a window!

Folks,

We're working on solutions and workarounds for compatibility issues with Windows 7. There are a variety of compatibility options in Windows 7. e.g. Run in 256 colors. We're testing to see which to recommend.

Thanks for your patience.

Once you post the recommendation(s) and the game works squeaky-clean, I'll go ahead and purchase.

There is a workaround for this color problem in Win 7 64 bit (I found this out on another game's site, so far it works for me for all of the games I've tried):

BEFORE you start ANW:

1) Right-Click on your desktop and select "Screen Resolution" from the menu
2) Leave the resulting window open (you don't need to change anything)
3) Start ANW, the colors should work

Why does this work?  Because its windoze[;)]

I tried it running ANW in fullscreen and it worked for me, hopefully it will work for you.  This will fix a lot of older win95/98 games too.

Hi,

Thanks for the tip. On my Win7 64bit installation, it didn't work. Same flashy colors, mostly blue, red and green - making playing the game impossible.

Hi..
I just purchased the H3 Trilogy. Installed ok. Running 64-bit W7PRO on a ASUS X58 (TUF) Sabertooth MB with 12GB ram and a GTX470 video card.
All launch ok with the exception on the H3 Ultimate ANW where I get the 256 color scheme. Tried all methods indicated in this thread. Nojoy.. Not sure if compatibilty explained in thread correctly..
H3 394 and 363 seem to run ok.
Any additional help would be appreciated.

:)

For UANW:

Right click on Harpoon3.exe file and select Properties.
Under the Compatibility tab, click on Run in 256 color.

Then start up the program "as Administrator", and it should run.

The strange thing is that if you rename the h3.exe from UANW to say h3_3101.exe, and copy it to the ANW v394 directory, it will run normally without the need to set 256 colors.
