dawn

how many times now, has our story opened with that word
dawn

A new day

A long night has passed, a long night of hidden terrors and dangers, enemies stalking you in the dark.
Now, now, at least, thinks Nishimura, I can at least see them

men are tired pre dawn, men who have stood at guns,, at boilers, on the bridge, below, for the night. But it takes but one sentence to wash the fatigue away

"Enemy in sight!:

Heavy cruiser Myoko leads the way, her bows leaping, plowing through the swell, waves creaming, breaking, rushing over her focastle, behind her, close , Mikuma, Agano, the ugly tatsuta, 3 destroyers.
he seas are grey, the sky close, dark, heavy with rain.
On the horizon, low, the port of Ambon, yet a shadow. The enemy, small, indiscrete spots, smoke rising in columns, as ships struggle to get away

The wind is cold upon Nishimura's face,
he raises his glasses, 12000, 13000 yards?.....a cruiser, 5 destroyers, peeling towards him.....

But sweeping down from port, a great curtain of rain.........

"Port 15!, prepare for action, starboard!"

The enemy line ripples with fire, bright flashes in the grey light, and then, coldly, abruptly, the rain pounds down.
'radar!"
""Blind as a bat sir!"

And so they shoulc be too.........

Nishimura looks about his bridge, at the men who follow him. They will not flinch, HE, will not flinch.
The heavy cruisers guns are swung to starboard, they have little elevation......

The rain pours down,. in the silence, in the wet, they plungs on
""Standby men........this will be nasty"

It is.

The rain, as abruptly as it begins, ends......

2000 yards away, parralel, guns pointing at them, CL Montepellier, the destroyers
And hell breaks lose

Hosho is counting ammunition when the messanger arrives
"'Battalion requests you sir"

Hosho curses, more depressing news, for sure

he leaves the pill box, climbs the short distance up the slope of the hill it occupies, enters the deep, deep trench.
All about him, 55th division is preparing for battle, the men making final checks. Ammunition lies in piles, grenades in neat piles.
he enters the bunker

It is the prince.
A changed man now, war has stripped away all the pretensions that he brought to Burma, so many months, so many, many miles ago. Now Hosho fronts a thin, almost emancipated figure. The eyes , now, show knowledge, show weariness, show..........wisdom even.

And, he can see it.....resignation?

the Prince cuts straight to the chase
"The road south has been cut by two enemy cavalry units............horses, it seems, still have their uses."
The prince smiles, with out humour. His great white stallion, went into the pot weeks ago..............
'We are cut off. Worse, we count some ten, yes, ten divisions about to attack. We are ordered to make a fighting retreat south, if at all possible. "

A pause.
Ah, Hosho thinks, the depressing news..........
"55th division will hold the line, retiring only when all other units are clear. "
he takes Hosho in the eye. "There will be no banzia attacks, no madness here. If we are destroyed, so be it. But destruction means the opening of Malaya............"

The Prince hands Hosho a scrap of paper. "This is an allocation of my last ammunition reserves, 5 units worth. use them wisely Hosho, make them pay"

And if to enforce the orders, distantly, the tattoo beat of heavy guns

A body floats in the grey, grey sea

Once, a man, a man with honour, power, influence

Now, body corruptible

We pull back, expnd our view of this water. More bodies, wreckage, oil,

Only Mikuma has survived this battle, she crawls north, fighting the fires from the shell hits, the hell divers bombs.
behind her, the bodies, the wrecks of her comapnions.

Nishimura's body bobs, bounces of another, whiter one

American

Montepellier, two destroyers, they add to the floating field of dead

The invasion fleet has been saved.

But the sea of bodies, bobbing, floating, they care not.

15th October

HoSho's position is dead centrl in 55th Divisions front

A series of interlinking bunkers and pill boxes occupying a low 500 foot high ridge, runiing almost due north east. The ridge is split at about half mile intervals with gullies and water courses, giving the defence line a series of "bumps"

The Jungle is mostly gone, blasted away from weeks of bombing, it lies shattered on the slopes below the positions.
What has survived has been cleared for several hundred yards to the front. The whle area bakes under the blazing sun.

Dust, dirt, debris. They dominate

The ridge line is laced with trenches, hidden tunnels, the heavy buried box pillboxes. These are thick , layers of tree trunks, palm mostly, many are two layers thick, all are buried.

The line , as stated, runs North east. There , however lays one problem, 20 miles to the North, 23rd armies flank has been turned, forcing a re orientation.

But this , for now, and onwards, will mean little to 55th division. They fight almost as independent unit.
In front...........6th and 7th Australian divisions, and an unknown Indian one.
Japans forces are short of everything

The allied ones lack for nothing.

With a shattering roar, their artillery opens fire.

' a message from MGEN Okamoto sir, plese hold for 24 hrs, before first retirement"

"24 hours", thinks Hosho, as the ground shakes, the shells scream in, the dust explodes.........'who is he kidding?"

Hirate and Okano are working in Hiyos hanger, re arranging the portable pump hoses, moving the jerry cans.

There are six smll diesel pumps on the deck, the noise is simply horiffic.
Today, it seems they are winning, the seas, calm and smooth, have helped, and the hoses have been firm all day. Now, however, one is "gasping", the compartment below dry.

The two men haul at it, drag its great wieght to another hole, feed it in.
The hose hardens, the diesel beat deepens

"How much fuel left?" Okano asks
"heaps........but"

Okano finishes the sentence for him......."yes, I know, some of thes barsteds sound sick, we are going to lose pumps soon"

Hirate sits on Hiyos fantail, braced on the capsta against her list

The world about him, is Beautiful. Blue sea, blue, endless sky. The clouds, as ever, rising on the horizon.
Even the ugly warships seem acceptable.

a mind works overtime, thinking of that dark, dark, cramped ventilation trunk. The rope, tight, taught, its steady progress as he was hauled from darkness to light.

A mind contemplates.
Life, death, eternity

If he survives this crap, he must seek some answers.

Long pig and Bigglesworth ride yet again in the bck of a truck
This time, fortunately, they head North. The great panic, apparently is over, the Jpanese counterattack has faltered, pounded three days stright by heavy bombers, it has thought better of it.

The truck pulls over off the road, nestles under some trees

The driver and his companion climb out......"Tea break fellows?

Bigglesworth grins.'Don't mind if we do, old chap, don't mind if we do"

Long pig climbs painfully down. The road stretches endlessly on across the paddy fields. The traffic is light, some locals clatter past on abandoned japanese bicycles.
Its going to be a hot day.

Another vehcile drives up, a jeep.
A tall angular LT climbs out.
"Is this the road to bangkok chaps?"
"Eventually sir........"

"Good. Look, there is a japanese unit cut off two miles over there........" he points vagually to the east, "apparently its moving this way, be good chaps and keep that in mind eh?"

"The road is going to be cut sir?"
'Oh, I doubt it.....but you know"

The jeep drives away, dust rising

The tea is good

Quiet descends, except , of course, the ever present growl of aero engines of the allied air in the area.

Tea finished, the men begin to gather their kit.

Overhead, un noticed, three mosquitos are circling.
They wing over, and come in to attack..........

The Mosquitos make but one pass.
One moment Long pig is climbing into the back of the truck, the next the world is filled with the KAWWWAAAAK, KAAAWAAAK of lead striking the truck all about him, of dust spurts, of the roar of merlins....

So many times, he has delivered this hailstorm from his plane, now the sheer terror sheets home
But it does not freeze him, instinctively he flings himself at the ditch, lands rolls, eats dirt

Silence

Cautiously he raises his head

Bigglesworth rises carefully from the rear of the truck, inspects himself, dusts of his front
"Bloody Jonah Long pig, I have said it before, I'll say it again, you're a bloody Jonah"

Somehow, nobody has been hurt.
A miracle indeed
The driver curses, kicks his truck, it is patently never going to go again.
he does not have to say anything to his too pilot passengers, you can imagine yourself the look they recieve.

"Come on Long pig, before they come back...........we had better start walking"

he falls in beside his friend....."One thing though, you may be a Jonah, but you are a better shot than those idiots"

Fuchida spares a glance at the formation of bombers below him

A long time, he thinks, since Malaya has seen the like

25 elderly Sally bombers fly north. Above them, spread wide, 43 Franks of 22nd. The irony cannot have been lost on the bomber pilots. They begun this war flying south to bomb Singapore, now they come north.
The roles have been reveresed

Many, I think, secretly don't believe that this campaign result will be any different to 42's
But they fly, bravely, nevertheless.

The flight, amazingly, is incident free, they arrive south of the main battle at Prachuap Khiri Khan, unload on the road, and turn for home.

Fuchida turns with them, eyes dran to the battle 20 miles away.
Even from here, even from 16000 feet, it is not hard to tell, giants are doing battle.

55th divisional front

Hoshos company

The artillery fire lifts, the shrieking seeking rear positions, seeking Divisional Artillery

The company knows its business, as one, each man rises , and takes their fire positions.
They are coming, Khaki men, tall, bronzed.
They too know their job, they move from cover to cover, slowly edging up the slope, firing, moving, firing

The machine guns chatter in defience

The attack falters

For a moment

"Crap"..........the dark, menacing shapes crawl from the forest....tanks, 6 shermans at least
They move on the pill box to Hosho's right.....guns spit
The pill box holds, the chatter in return continues

three Japanese figures suddenly rise from the dust and rubble near the tanks, one falls immediately, the other two dive at the tanks

Shattering bangs

4 tanks left

Calmly Hosho reaches for his phone......." "Okamoto here"
"request artillery fire my sector sir, 4 shermans giving me not a little trouble!'
'denied!, I do not have ammunition for anything other than over the sight engagements!"
'Hiei!"

Bullets whistle, mortars crump, dust settles thickly, choking.
The bedlam of battle..

"Flame thrower unit..........the tanks!"
5 men, doomed men, fling themselves into the battle

below, the enemy are holding, laying withering fire...........how much bloody ammunition do they have?
The Japanese fire, intermittant............conserving, conserving what ever they have

"Indian troops reported to almost the top of the gully on our left sir!"
"3 rd squad on me!"
Hosho takes the machine gun, loops the belt over his shoulder

The mad charge down the trench, up, ver the rise to the right

Bodies, bleeding, screaming wounded
gasping for breath, gods, for a drink.
They enter a smaller, narrower trench, crawl down the hill 100 yards.

5 men hold a hole at its end, tattered, desperate men
they fire, they fire

"Having fun me?"
"Piss off Hosho, we don't need your help"

3rd squad moves left, another trench, a depression really

A shell obliterates the hole behind them

Hosho pushes down a hidden trap door, mounts the gun
Spread across the gulley,, 30 odd men, backs to him. They have their flank

Hoshos gun chatters.............

(squad destroyed...........how clinical for so many, many lives thrown away, ground up in this madness)

Hosho retreats, past the carnage, through the maelstrom.
he knows he must, will die. But not yet, surely not yet

First attack

50 odd sqauds destroyed both sides, 160 odd disabled both sides
3600 casos both sides
Forts to 2

Supplies-----------negative
Prince Gen Higashikuni orders the beginning of the attempt to break out of the Kessel
55th division will be rearguard.

October 17th

The sea will not be denied.
They fight it.
They win minor victories, do Okono, Hirate.. The pumps rumble day after day, one fails, they get it going again

But below, the water presses, and presses, and presses
It seeks every weakness, every fault.

Cable glands through bulkheads and deck heads............rivelets
Pipes to machinery....streams
Ventilation trunks, veritable rivers........

And still 200 odd miles to go

22nd sweep north again
43 strong again, seeking the enemy, seeking battle

They find it

There are nearly 60 odd T bolts waiting, waiting for battle as well, waiting for revenge

They pounce, coming in from bove, great diving birds of prey

They need but one pass, they fall, they fire, 22nd scattering as it can as they barrell down and through, diving for safety

19 of 22nd sentai fall

Fuchida's story ends here, unseen, un noticed in the disaster that befalls them

How, i do not know
where,..............somewhere over the battle on Hoshos front

He's gone

Another empty space at the quiet, shocked table this night

"please inform MGEN Okamoto, that Comany is preparing to withdraw 1 kilometre south, as ordered"
The shells continue to crash onto their positions.

The barsteds keep pressing, and pressing

Several of his men pass him, machine gun, mortar on shoulders.
One grins........'not quite ten to one sir, but they are bloody well bleeding"

No, not quite

55 division, he hears, has lost 30 prcent of its strength. His company, an equal share.

They are holding, the rest..ahh truck to the rest. 55th division fights at last.

But, gods, they just keep pressing.

An unfortunate, historical, side-effect of the Japanese pilot rotation policy (or lack thereof) - you fly until you die.....

10th of October

extract from "falling Cherry Blossoms", a Japanese naval Fighter pilots war

These were not pleasant days

Winter already blows coldly over Tokyo, as we continued our seemingly endless patrols
So many fighters over Tokyo.........

Many of us thought this such a titanic waste, many wished for us to travel south, to fight at the front
How foolish that seems now!

Some of us, I think, knew why we patrolled endlessly.

The American carriers...........where the hell were the American Carriers?
The raids of that last month may have raised a fierce rage in Japans people. But they have also shaken them.
Herbiesan, great dictator............

maybe not so great..........

We flew CAP. I admit it, Diogowa, good friend, wingmate, companion, he began to get fat again.
And in war, how can anyone say that is not a bad thing?

calm seas today.

55th have retreated 12 miles
Today, a real allied effort.
On the far flank, divisions have cracked. A Thia Army unit has been obliterated.
2200 allied casualties have been inflicted.

"Ten to die for every one of us!"
A joke, in the light of today.

10000 japanese casualties reported, the port captured.

The germans have a word for it:
Kessel

Cauldron

A growing disaster

The allies keep pressing.

Extract from "shattering the sword" a cantona production

If there are any days in the battles around Prachuap Khiri Khan that can be picked out as "the decisive day", this may well be it
A relief column coming north, a full regiment, comes into contact with the british blocking force. Foolishly, it does not wait for the artillery regiment following, and flings itself up the road.

It is repulsed

two full Japanese divisions in the cauldron are reported "totally in effective".
Only 15th Army, the 33rd division, the 55th, hold their positions, effecting retreats that bring them another 6 miles south.

But another 4000 Japanese soldiers lie dead.

55th, 33rd now hold the line alone, the rest of the Japanese army flees south along the coastal strip, leaving a trail of debris behind them.

But the allies keep attacking.
Tomorrow, the armour will attack again

Hosho rests with a platoon of men.
they are less than 100 yards from the sea, its there, but the mangroves prevent them seeing it

A narrow road, a track really, runs betwwen the mangroves, and a patch of jungle.
1000 yards north, a small fishing village, to the south, another low hill running down to the sea, a headland

To the west, the hills.

The remains of a division, once the pride of the 23rd army, streams down the path. Many Weaponless, starving, many, a great many wounded.
"two divisions reported non effective"

No kidding

Hosho eyes the retreating troops with disdain.
The enemy is on their flank, pushing along the hills. the village, by the sound of it, has just been occupied.

The orders, from that idiot prince, are simple, the headland must still be in japanese hands by tonight.
No, amend that, must be in japanese hands tonight..........
33rd div must take it.
55th must hold the rear.

the fishing village marks a small river, on some map, somewhere, that useless rivlet must look a defendable line.
Hosho sighs, rises, limbs almost trembling, gathers his gun

"glory awaits men'
"Aaa h piss off Hosho, who are you kidding?"
Hosho smiles.........."Ok, Ok, , there is a good chance theres a feed or two in that village now, if we retake it"

His men rise
'fair enough"

A company, 50 men strong now, moves north

2 divisions "written off today".....2000 more casualties, enemy achieve 3 to 1

20th October

A Japanese relief regiment fails to break the Kessel

The allies rest one day, the japanese army, somehow, manages to creep south a little further

33rd, 55th divisions ,effectively at 50% strength, are the only really effective units left.
They hold the line

Hiyo has 100 miles to go
Flooding is at 91%

Her crew now barely dare to go below, they huddle mostly on the quarter deck, or in the shade of the leaning, sloping island

Takeji watches, silent, rock like, on the bridge
He speaks to no body. He does not sleep, as if his very will can hold the waters back.
