NAVAL BOMBARDMENT NOT WORKING AFTER BETA PATCH

Something seems to be wrong with naval bombardment following installation of the v1.01.06d beta patch.

Im attempting to bombard Saipan prior to amphibious assault.

First I send in 2 bombardment TFs to bombard from 25,000 yards:

Now I have 5 shot up BBs and half a dozen battered cruisers but I still cant damage the impregnable Saipan Naval Fortress. All of my bombardment TFs have float planes flying recon over Saipan in addition to land based heavy recon units. Three bombardment TFs with 6 BBs, 9 CAs and $ CLs at a standoff of 10,000 yards manage to cause 19 casualties and score a single runway hit.


Not only that but the BB Arizona/BB Nevada TF didnt use any ammo on its last bombardment from 10,000 yards:

no mods

Bombardment TF (10 DDs) yesterday bombarded Tulagi. All Destroyers are down to Ammo Level 3 (18) with their 5 inch guns.
Lunga was bombarded by 2 BBs and a mixed force of Cruisers and Destroyers. The Battleships (North Carolina and California) are down to Ammo Level 6 (12) with their main guns, the Cruisers down to 2 (14).
Some - but not all - secondary guns were also fired (Cruisers only, not the BBs).
Both TFs had "Allow Escorts to Bombard" on. MinBombard 0.

I thinks it's working as designed (WAD).

When you have 6 consecutive bombardments.......4 0f which are from 15,000 yards or less.....plenty close enough for CD guns to score repeated hits on the ships... and you cause negligible damage I dont think that the game is WAD.

When you have a bombardment TF supposedly "bombard" an island and take very heavy damage from CD gun shells and yet it doesnt expend ANY ammo in return I dont think the game is WAD.

Admiral,

Naval bombardment was notoriously ineffective against hardened targets IRL both in Eurpoe and Pacific. I can't say if it is 'broken' in this game, but it does seem to mirror history pretty well.

If you are assuming Saipan in this case is a soft target like historic Tarawa, then perhaps there is an issue.

IMO, there is no way around a bloody battle with a hardened defended one hex island. Bombing the port and airfield out of existance to get base damage up and destroy some supply is far more effective than bombardment. When it comes to invasions against such targets, I find getting the airfield / port damage to 100/100 is the time to invade. It wont get any easyier than that, becuase any engineers wont be able to rebuilt forts. I put several large escorts and a number of smaller ones in the amphib convoy and attack without bombardment convoy. Those escorts tend to take the damage dished out by the fort. Not perfect, but workable imho.

Setting the BBs float plane to Night Recon would probably have improved the Night Bombardment - they would have acted as spotters and dropped flares IRL.

They is a random factor in that the ship guns might not fire. Extremely bad rolls if no guns on the ship fired at all.

Michaelm...thanks for the response....not one of the 14 ships in the one bombardment used any ammo so that must have been a lot of extremely bad die rolls. I have a question about the night spotters. The bombardment TF goes in before the AC missions occur so you would need to send up a night recon the night before the actual bombardment?

Im gonna hit the Saipan Naval Fortress with 2 more bombardment TFs and a 1000 plane raid next turn. A thousand plane raid could cause a firestorm in Dresden killing over 100,000 people.....lets see if it will cause 100 casualties to the Saipan Naval Fortress.

Because the bombardment can happen before the air phase, you just need to set the FP to Recon. Before the bombardment starts, the mission of the groups are checked and if any are RECON, then they pseudo-fly for the attack - they don't count as a mission per se. If you don't want them to fly RECON in the air phase, just set the range to 0.

Fortress units are hard to wear down just by using naval bombardment in my experience.

IIRC when testing I was seeing messages for each ship saying a spotter plane was helping that ship - but I did not try testing with only one plane per TF.

michaelm...the night bombardment seems to work a bit better with the night recon planes.

jwilkerson....you may be right. The cbt rpt txt seems to indicate that recon planes act as spotters for individual ships at night but that may be only a script thing:

Now I have 5 shot up BBs and half a dozen battered cruisers but I still cant damage the impregnable Saipan Naval Fortress. All of my bombardment TFs have float planes flying recon over Saipan in addition to land based heavy recon units. Three bombardment TFs with 6 BBs, 9 CAs and $ CLs at a standoff of 10,000 yards manage to cause 19 casualties and score a single runway hit.


Not only that but the BB Arizona/BB Nevada TF didnt use any ammo on its last bombardment from 10,000 yards:

Guess you had bad intel, wrong distance or just bad rolls Amis [:'(]

or very high fort lvl?

Does surface radar enhance this for night bombardments?

Hi- My concern with bombardment is that my OBBs fire off almost all of their large caliber ammo. I just bombarded Roi-Namur with 5 OBBs.

Results-300+ Japanese casualities(which seems low to me), but all OBBs went from 12/12 large ammo to 2/12 large ammo. Is this the pattern for shore bombardments from now on? That seems to be a huge expenditure of ammo for not very good returns.

Dec 43. Not really. Radar at this date isn't discerning physical features yet. Helping you land on a target the you acquire visually? Yes. Helping you find targets? Not yet.

In sea battles, the radar is helping as a ship stands out against the sea background. Land items just aren't really discernible at this stage of radar development. Not really sure they had this even in '46. By '52 though, this was definitely evolving.

Sounds legitimate to me. Read about Tararawa (sp? real rough day at work). The bombardment didn't do much but cut communication lines and with a lucky shot took out the Japanese commander when he was trying to change his location. (good videos on U-tube). In WW I it took huge amount of shells to do anything at all. A quantity you can't even get close to puting on your ships.

Overall I would say bombardment only damages moral and orginization. Of course this helps once the land troops get there but actual casualties I can't imagine there would be much.
