It would have been nice to have the System location of the ship in the current ship panel (lower left corner).
At the moment, I have to use the galaxy sector map and try to see which icon lights up.

It may be that I don't understand exactly what you are asking/hoping/requesting, but you can select individual ship and move to that ship in ships and bases screen.

I just wanted a quick visual id of where the ship was sitting as I was flicking through the available ships.
Want a ship in the same or nearby system to use, rather than pull one in from the other end of the empire.

Hmmm.. I am not sure either. Do you mean by this using the 'next'/'previous' military ship icons? Then, yes it is sometime a bit hard to get the general idea where the selected ship is. Either you are zoomed in and have only the system map and sometimes system name (as long the ship is within a system), or you zoom out enough to have the crowded sector map before you.

The problem is: the selection pane is also a bit crowded already, and adding to it may make things worse.

There is an explicit function to select the nearest combat ship. It is provided by the topmost icon to the right of the selection pane. Maybe you are looking for something like this? Just in case you have missed that until now.

Of course, the ship you get may not always be what you want, and the function is not expanded upon by letting you select a different combat ship while the last one returned is still selected, iirc (as in the nearest combat ship to a combat ship is the one itself).
