This is a general announcement to those players loving Distant Worlds,
if you haven't stopped by the Mod Section
you are really missing out on some wonderful mods that has really extended the enjoyment of Distant Worlds and may do the same for you.


Also if you would like to get involved and maybe learn how to mod a ship from scratch and for free check out Gary Childress excellent tutorial thread on Wings 3d.

Any questions or help for installing the mod, just ask and I am sure myself or any other person would be happy to help you out.

the star trek and planet graphics mods are hosted on rapidshare which i cant access :(

if anyone is able to dl them and reupload them to another site like mediafire it wld be much appreciated :)

Within those threads I have uploaded the mods directly to one of my hosted servers, and now everyone can access through my servers SSL for a direct download. (I hate Rapidshare)

That brings up a good point worth mentioning. That is outstanding news that there are further plans to expand the support for modding, which there has been already OUTSTANDING support for the mod community. For example the Customization Guide being released days before Distant Worlds street date. So even though DW has been criticized for it's lesser degree of what is open in terms of mods, there is already a plethora of community content.

So props to Matrix/Codeforce as well!

So I downloaded some of the cool ships and extraxted them into images/units/ships/family10

why arent they showing up? do i need to replace a older style to get these in the game? could someone explain how I can use these new models in game. Thanks.

Almost spot on.
You need them to replace an existing set.
Refer to the customisation guide if you want to avoid overwriting your original files by using a theme folder. Altenatively you could back up and replace but I wouldn't reccomend it.
Either way you need to use your ship set In place of an existing set.

Mr. Rutins,

I like your attitude, but needs a dash more soonerratherthanlater-thusiasm. (Although, i do understand that its not always the choice of an employee to pick the next project)

But one thing i will state right here (the interwebs) and right now, When pricing, components, research trees, and component/research types are externalized (and hopefully a scriptable economy pricing based on supply/demand so the mod maker can tweak to his liking), I will buy your game, and so will everyone I know or I will kill them.
I will also buy the sequel if the above conditions are met.
Also to ice the cake ill spam-vertize you across unconventional online massive communication (4chan etc.)

Keep up the good work guys this game has serious potential, I'd like to see its chastity belt taken off.

I hear you on that and thank you for your patience. We do plan to give modders quite a bit more to have fun with, but to date we've had to prioritize that a bit lower than fixing the reported issues. It is fairly high on our list though, but it is also a fair amount of work to really expose some of these things.

I for one, am looking forward to more moddability.

The flexability of the game means we have the potential to do a lot with it.
I am interested in working towards a warhammer 40k mod, for sure.

I cant wait until we can ADD MORE SHIPS, and CUSTOMIZE RACES, without replacing the great stuff that is currently in the game. I would also like a button that we could press to make all races present in a game so we dont have to manually go through and select each one individually. Also, it would be nice if when you go to customize a game it saved your options from the last custom game you made, that way I wouldnt have to keep entering the same values in again every time I start a new game.

Added a new sound clip for the Message_Alarm.wav (the warning Klaxon) that is just a 4 second clip of silence. Much less annoying.
