I just got an email from somebody I don't know asking for my game serial, and I'm wondering if anybody else got this message...

quote:

Hello,

I am a member of Matrixgames Forum and I am the great fan of War in the Pacific Admiral's Edition.

I am going to play PBEM game, but I can't install latest game patch.
I don't have VALID GAME SERIAL NUMBER.

I am looking for a valid serial number.
Maybe You can help me?
Could You give me serial number for WITP AE, please?

My private E-mail is
santi023@wp.pl

I have high experience in WITP and maybe we can play together.

regards,
Kaiten

I haven't, but that's weird.  Sounds suspicious to me.

you can answer him "Kup sobie grę, nie kradnij." Which means 'Buy the game, do not steal'.

Ha! i just read the forum rules myself. Rule 7 is interesting. i suspect some of the comments directed at T's 'toe' could be construed as offensive!!

If it's already installed the serial number is in the registry.

I'm thinking he wants a valid serial # so he can then tell Matrix "my copy of the game is messed up, please send me another one free, here's my serial #".  Like the others have said, the serial # is on the disk itself or if you dl'ed the game, it is in the registry.

It's a tough crowd to outfox here, but as in all numbers games somebody will give it to him, just a matter of time.

Nothing suspicious about this. He's being quite up front about the fact that he's stolen the game, but been too stupid to steal a serial number to go with it.

It's a shame that the guy is from my country.

What really puzzles me - why the hell he needed that serial for? If he had a game, he should have original serial (in case he bought the game) or a serial of a buddy who let him copied his installation CD.

I just got an email from Matrix with my serial. I got one when I downloaded it, but did not get one (on the disc) when the physical game arrived. So that was cool of them to send it to me (a month later).

Erik Rutkins et. al. from Matrix have been very helpful in the past when new (or old) owners of the game have misplaced their serial numbers. If you think this is a legitimate email request, I'd refer the person to Matrix support. They can confirm the purchase and help him identify the location of the purchased serial number.

It's not legitimate. Reeks of feeble attempts at deception and cleverness.

I knew that, Terminus. I was trying to offer objective information to the PP about his post and future options for other forum members in a similar situation. My opinion re: the legitimacy of his inquiry was not what the PP asked.

Not too clever since every single note on the forum help thread eventually gets...helped.

He propably updated the game and noticed that the previous serial he used doesnt work anymore. Matrix games are that much niche that their patches are usually left uncracked. The only way to get patched matrix games is to buy them and considering how good the patches are you really want them so there is no choice. You either buy or you dont play. Its one of the few DRMs that actually work.
