I have WITP, and have had so for abouta year, now I am about ready to learn it and play it. or scrap WITP and buck-up w/ a purchase of WITP AE.

is AE so much better, that I should byass WITP altogether, or should I just keep and lear/play WITP and not spend extra $ on AE yet?
thanks!

Far better. IMO - go directly to AE. I would go on at more length, but there are already a lot of recent threads asking the same question. Poke around the forum here and you will probably find any specific info you might be curious about.

Downgrade and play PacWar. It's more enjoyable.
Kidding aside, I contemplated on stopping my AE game for some WitP action.
But now I decided to just continue AE and having fun.

Probably one of the best computer wargames to date. Definitely the best WW2 Pacific Theater IMHO.

AE is the "Governor". Takes time to learn but once you do it really is a fantastic experience.

Thanks Gents, but what about learning the game? is not WITP the game to learn on, in that it has a hefty tutorial?

That may be true.  I played WITP for several years and had absolutely no problem migrating to AE.  I understood what all the new rules meant in game terms, at least for the most part.  The details were all I had to contend with.

Some might argue that it's better just to plunge into AE.  That may also be a good strategy.  But, for most of us, learning AE without the benefit of AE didn't happen, so we really don;t know how viable an option that is.  So I'd listen first to someone who never played WITP and learned AE by itself, if you want an unbiased opinion on that working.

Oh, and the tutorial was useful, but I only went through it once, and not all the way.  I learned much more by just jumping onto the campaign game and screwing up for three or four starts, getting a little better each time.  By game four, I guess it was, I played well into 1943, before I had the final "aha!"  After that I played many, many games to the bitter end.  So, the tutorial is useful, but it's not critical, I don't think.

I´d say both are hard to learn. Its a bit like deciding whether to climb Mt. Everest to K2.
Compared to other mountains not such a big difference between those two.

You have to do it step by step anyway so I recommend to go straight for AE. The only advantage I see from starting with stock WitP
is that you have a higher respect for what has been improved in AE.
Start with a small scenario and be prepared to spend some time there learning the ropes. You get help here when you need it.

While experience with UV and WiTP has been useful in familiarizing myself with the interface of AE, they haven't been irreplaceable. AE is a different game in its own right. If you haven't invested any time in WiTP, don't bother doing so now. Take the plunge in AE. Make some mistakes, read the forum, play against the AI and you'll catch on.

What the previous posters just said. Plus, the AE interface is better and easier to use than the WITP interface. Start right with AE and forget about WITP entirely (IMO) both learning-wise and play-wise.

Since you have WITP, you might try using the tutorial as a guide. Fire up one of the small AE scenarios, then refer to the WITP tutorial just to see what kinds of functions you should practice. The step by step instructions will be of little value of course.

Another very important thing. The AE manual is great. All manuals are imperfect, and there have been ongoing improvements and additions to AE since it was first released. Make certain to refer to the release notes (both for formal releases and the recent hotfixes) beside the manual. Using the search function in the PDF's is quite helpful. And of course when you can't find or figure out something, come to the forum.

Good luck.

I never played WitP, and started AE a few weeks after it came out (early August '09). Took me about 3 months of playing and reading these forums pretty heavily to really get my arms around it. Feel pretty good about my ability now, certainly no veteran, but playing adequately in two PBEM's since about November.

First of all,  you really have to read and digest the manual. That's a big undertaking, since it's so long, but it is absolutely critical as time goes by to learn how the game operates at the various levels. The first time you read it, don't worry too much whether certain areas are a bit vague, that's to be expected in a game of this complexity. Instead, try to figure out the gist of what's going on.

Secondly, begin playing against the AI on the small scenarios. Start with Coral Sea, which is only 1 week of game time, but great for learning the basics of CV combat. Alternate playing it with both Japanese and Allies, until you feel you've learned what you need from it. Then move on to the Aleutian campagin, this one's good for learning LBA, SAG, and invasion basics. When you're ready, move on to Guadacanal, which is pretty much every aspect of the game in a concentrated theater. I'd advise staying with Guadacanal until you get bored of it, that scenario is very much a game in its own right, and much easier to digest than the main campaign.

Go back and read through the manual as need be when you hit an area you don't understand. Those vague spots from your initial reading will start to become much clearer. Keep doing this until you can look through the manual and pretty much understand every aspect of it.

I played and read the manual for about 2 months before I was really ready to jump into a PBEM game. I started with a PBEM game of Guadacanal scenario, I'd recommend this for your first PBEM or two since you're going to make some mistakes the first couple of times, and you won't feel like you've lost too much time in the smaller format.

Most of all, don't get discouraged if it feels like you'll never get your arms around this beast. I went through those moments in the first 3 months, then one day, all the pieces started to fit together nicely in my head. I'm now border-line addicted to the game :)

Frankly this is a question I have. After buying the game last week. I spent Saturday just getting the hang of things and running through Coral Sea for the second time. Anyway first thing Sunday Morning I jumped on the campaign. I think by Sunday evening I had done 5 days in the game. Is it always this slow and intensive? It would take years to do a campaign! Or as I am hoping at least do you guys kinda get in a groove and move through turns/days quicker after you learn the basics.

I admit I constantly was going back to the manual and having to look stuff up. Plus constantly trying to figure out convoys...both cargo and beginning to move troops. Anyway would like to know what Vets say.

mantrain: I dont think so.
But there is one help: Start with one part of map, set up everything, then move up to another...

netjam99: Game speed
Once you have everything set up properly, you are more or less doing just "adjustments" to the situation... Also one the DEI campaign dies down, the game slows down as Japs wont be that aggresive and allies do not have enough strenght...

You should go over to the WITP main forum and read the thread titled "WITP lovers chime in" (it is on page 1 and is the most recent thread).

Posting your question on the AE forum will obviously elicit responses from those who are currently enjoying AE. Over on the classic WITP forum you will find alternative views.

Admittedly, the reason why many of those still playing classic WITP is due to ongoing PBEM games, but there are some other reasons, mainly to do with less micromangement or play balance.
