I never played WitP, and started AE a few weeks after it came out (early August '09). Took me about 3 months of playing and reading these forums pretty heavily to really get my arms around it. Feel pretty good about my ability now, certainly no veteran, but playing adequately in two PBEM's since about November. First of all, you really have to read and digest the manual. That's a big undertaking, since it's so long, but it is absolutely critical as time goes by to learn how the game operates at the various levels. The first time you read it, don't worry too much whether certain areas are a bit vague, that's to be expected in a game of this complexity. Instead, try to figure out the gist of what's going on. Secondly, begin playing against the AI on the small scenarios. Start with Coral Sea, which is only 1 week of game time, but great for learning the basics of CV combat. Alternate playing it with both Japanese and Allies, until you feel you've learned what you need from it. Then move on to the Aleutian campagin, this one's good for learning LBA, SAG, and invasion basics. When you're ready, move on to Guadacanal, which is pretty much every aspect of the game in a concentrated theater. I'd advise staying with Guadacanal until you get bored of it, that scenario is very much a game in its own right, and much easier to digest than the main campaign. Go back and read through the manual as need be when you hit an area you don't understand. Those vague spots from your initial reading will start to become much clearer. Keep doing this until you can look through the manual and pretty much understand every aspect of it. I played and read the manual for about 2 months before I was really ready to jump into a PBEM game. I started with a PBEM game of Guadacanal scenario, I'd recommend this for your first PBEM or two since you're going to make some mistakes the first couple of times, and you won't feel like you've lost too much time in the smaller format. Most of all, don't get discouraged if it feels like you'll never get your arms around this beast. I went through those moments in the first 3 months, then one day, all the pieces started to fit together nicely in my head. I'm now border-line addicted to the game :)
