Stalingrad-Turning Point

Post by Silvanski »

I started a pbem test of "Stalingrad-Turning Point", a TOAWI scenario by Troy Ritter, converted to TOAWIII by Japlance.
I made some corrections here and there.. i.e units seemed to be pointing to the wrong counter.
Let's see how this one goes
Date: September 13th, 1942.
Location: Stalingrad.
Map scale: nominal 400 meters per hex.
Time scale: 2 turns per day.
Unit scale: Battalion
Turns: 128.

Significant Events.

The German player receives an increase in theater recon if he captures Maymayev Kurgan . This is lost if he later loses it. He reduces the overall Russian supply by capturing the extreme Northern and Southern supply points. There are numerous unit withdrawals for the German side as well.

The Russian player receives T-34 tanks from the still functioning Dzerhezinski Tractor Factory. These represent repaired and new tanks built there. these reinforcements will cease if the German player captures the factory .

OK, turn 1.. I'm playing as the Soviets.
My opponent (Eric from the RD forums) started the approach ... In the southeast he captured the leatherworks and is advancing on the built up area...
I plan to employ delaying tactics till reinforcements arrive... I try to sneak small units behind his formations... (see map) On the east bank of the Wolga I've got LR artillery, so it's a matter of letting the enemy advance far enough to get him within range
Heavy Luftwaffe interdiction hampers movement and random air attacks pummel my defenders

Turn 2
The size of the German force is starting to get clear to me... I'm outnumbered for now, but his formation on the left hand side has had its supply line cut[:D]

Turn 4.. I ferried some reinforcements across the river and we're establishing some more coherent lines
In the extreme northwest -off screenshot- a German attack was contained, they pulled back to regroup

***NEWS***
AM, September 13th, 1942
Paulus' 6th Army approaches Stalingrad
German units capture Leatherworks.

PM, September 13th, 1942
The Dzerhezinski Tractor Factory has been destroyed.
German units capture Minina.

AM, September 14th, 1942
German units capture Sadovaya Station.

They're slowly converging on the city... The southeast seems contained for now... Here's a shot a bit to the west. Too bad I have to use HQ's to create a screening line, but help's on its way

Not yet[:(]
Check your mail... I tried to contact the designer via the email given on RD, but that bounced... It seems this is the only scenario he published, way back in 2002.

After concluding the pbem I may put it up for download ... wanna iron out some glitches, without changing the feel of the original design though

Attention shifts to the northwest as the Germans there have regrouped and seem to be preparing an assault

Turn 7
Important German gains west of Hill 126.3... I had left the center only thinly screened because the main effort seemed to come from the southeast

The time for flexible defense is coming to an end... with upcoming reinforcements I plan to establish a fixed perimeter... Time for a small delaying move though

Turn 9 saw a strong German push in the center... Is he gonna go for a dash to the river bank and split my front in two?

Turn 11... in the Northwest I'm trying to disrupt the German rear in order to delay their advance. Encircling Orlovka was a nice operation
