Using CVEs with replacement air units in a replenishment Tf is refilling my air combat groups checked ok, but is this the only use available to them?,
I am grouping three CVE in an air combat TF and trying to make them bombard an enemy atoll and it seems not working, with the same settings a normal CV is pounding the same base.

Whats wrong? is the TF type for CVEs (should it be CV escort?) or is that the replacement air units doesn´t make non-training missions?

Check the air units onboard. VR squadrons are for replacements only. Some CVEs do have VF and VB squadrons. those will fly regular missions.

Never tried offensive missions from a replenishment tf before. Usually the replacement squadrons (approx. 48 planes) overload the cve capacity (usually 28-31 + 10 or 15? %) enough that no missions can be performed.

The offensive mission is not being launched from a replenishment TF, I formed an Air combat TF with the CVEs, not in game now but I´m prety sure they are not overloaded... I´m becoming to think as redd says "VR squadrons are for replacements only."  but I couldn't find any specific on this in the rules

Don't mean to speak badly about the fine effort on the manuel, because it sure is pretty. And informative as well. But it seems in some instances that knowledge of the WitP manuel is necessary to fully understand some topics. Or maybe it's not even there and I learned it on the forums. Can't remember.

It wasn't in the original manual either. This is pure forum knowledge. There was a comparable thread about CVE in WITP when it came out in 2004. same problem.

1. Set the mission for your CVE's to Air Combat.
2. Ensure they are not overloaded (ie only use one Sqn of 28 or split Sqns such that the CVE capacity is not exceeded).
3. Set all similarly equipped Sqn's within ferry range to no replacements, including the other VR groups!

With these settings your VR Sqns will behave as proper Sqns and will not have replacements 'sucked off' to replace casualties in other units within range. Takes some setting up but it does work.

Replacements from VR squadrons should not happen if the ship is not part of a Replenishment TF.

CVE's were, in some respects the workhorses of WWII air-naval operations.  CVE also stands for 'Combustable, Vulnerable, Expendable' as quite a few (both British and American) went through teh wringers during active operations.  Many particularly int eh Pacific & Med wars took part in fleet operations,  whilst the Brits tended to use them for ASW and shooting down the odd Condor in the North Atlantic

Aren't Condors an endangered species?  The Brits should be ashamed of themselves.    Well, at least it was only the odd Condors and not the even ones.

It is worth noting that CVE's operating 'scarecrow patrols', basically two Swordfish communicating with each other by hand gestures & signals,  managed a higher success rate against German U-Boats than any other form of British sub-killer unit in WWII.  One Swordfish would tow a primative asdic sensor in the water (flat out 80 knots but when a strong Atlantic headwind was blowing the Swordfish was virtually stationary over the water so it was the only plane in the inventory that could get away with this),  then signal (by hand) to the other waiting Swordfish that was circling carrying a couple of depth charges (which also had to be depth-set by hand using a lot of wire and string!) which would then come in & DC the intended target.  Sounds amazingly primitive but it worked time after time...

Promise you that it does, as I have done this twice now, once without the settings in my post - fighters disappeared in their droves to the 'grown up' flat tops and once with the settings when they behaved as proper CVW's
For both cases the mission was set to Air Combat.

No that's 'odd' as in funny looking.
