Status: offline 		Game started with no suprise and full use of his air units.

The fight with the Lexington kinda freaked me out tho - I did not expect to see her near Johnston... I think I got lucky on that one.

The port attack @ PH was TB only - the DB were used to close down the AF. I've got to keep the base tied up during the assaults I have planned.

Well, if you actually look at the fight above you see it is the only sort of surface combat those 75 durability CLAAs can win. Their best gun is a 3.9inch weapon optimised for AAA work. As a result their ability to penetrate armour protection is minimal. They simply can't hope to hurt a CA at all and will even find it tough to hurt any but the most underarmoured CL.

Add to that their extreme cost... Each of them costs about 2/3rds of an average Japanese BB and about 40% of the cost of a Shinano class CVA. So, instead of the 6 or so Designer class CLAAs ( Nemo-san etc ) you could build another 3 CVs or 4 BBs. That's a pretty steep trade-off. Their ammo banks also tend to be depleted by the end of the 2nd day of combat and due to the fact that their weapons are dual purpose if you can get them to waste their ammo on PTs and barges you can send in torpedo-bombers to kill them on the cheap on Day 2 or 3.

With that said they are death incarnate to torpedo-bombers when fully armed and their decks are strong enough to shrug off early-war SBD hits. As a result they make the absolute best CV escorts Japan can possibly have. Hell, even their size is calculated to draw torpedo bombers to them as they would be drawn to BBs --- and away from the CVs.

With that said I lost Nemo-san in my first game off Ceylon when 70 or so Swordfish and Barracudas attacked it from a land base. It destroyed about 30 with AAA but, IIRC, 6 torpedoes hit home and down she went.


But, basically, if facing enemy DDs the Designer Class CLAAs should do very well indeed. Throw even an outdated CL into the mix and it'll find itself outclassed by a ship which costs only a third of its cost to produce. It is specialised very, very narrowly.

Status: offline 		I agree, I bought only a few of the 75 durabilty ones, primarily as AAA CVTF duty, still the 15 durability CLAA's I invested in heavily, once again not for SC, but AAA... I like 'em a lot, so much so, you might find one that I hope you take special care of...

Nemo also told me some time ago to use them en-mass against some Pe-2's but I was too girlie to try.

Please-please tell me they are renamed to the Ki-66 VI Damain (which is what the Ki-44IIa Tojo upgrades to) and this frame is carrier-capable.

So Nemo-san is now 47/62/5 and still running @ 12 knots – pretty damned tough little CL for taking 2 torps and 30 shell hits.

I-153 has been sitting in the same hex with two ASW TFs on the west coast of Java for two turns – I spaced moving it last turn and, while she did get attacked and took 3 hits her SYS damage is only 5 so I’m sending her south along the coast looking for merchant shipping.

It is my intent to be very aggressive with my subs and mining operations. It’s is a weapon in my arsenal that I have, in the past, not used in an effective manner. Let's see what happens if I really go after the allies merchant shipping.

SAA Imperial Guards Div is moving from Ban Don to Kota Bharu. Thus unit plus what I already have @ Kota will be my eastern prong as I drive the allies to Singapore.

There are T-Storms in the area of Hawaii so I’m running KB to Johnston for resupply. Already I have close to 20k supply @ Johnston and TFs of fuel on the way.

I-156 near Madras is patrolling west along the coast, I-158 near Trivardum is patrolling NW along the coast, and I-162 is sitting SW of Cuttack.

I moved the Tainan Kktai <48 Zeke> to Kuching from Saigon and split it up into 3 groups with different altitudes for CAP. Last turn Jack was going after shipping with B-17s @ 5k… I also moved the Kanoya Kktai <27 Betty> and the 50 Chutai <3 Dinah> to Kuching also. The Dinah are on naval search @ 70% and the LB are on Naval Attack @ 6k with a 10% search.

Mike, I know that HI is tight in the beginning, but are you sure that Armament is the right thing to reduce? I only say this cause I know how difficult it is to bring in those units a bit later. Check out the LCUProduction chart, Arm drop down and see what you can reduce it to to keep the blue line above the green... I reduced shipbuilding in the beginning, stopping many late war CV's (and therefore also stopped some Naval Production facilities)... you really need to choose what you can afford, and what you can't ... as has been said before with this mod, you can't have it all. And reinforcing LCU's takes too much time, I rather have them come in full strength, which is what I've achieved...

Even with the cuts to ARM I'm increaseing by about 500pts per turn. I also chopped the 2 BC plus halted the first 8 subs. The CV Yamato clear the building slip in a day or two and that will cut another 180 from naval production (currently running at -196pts). I'll begin halting airframes I don't want to produce while slowly increasing the ones I need plus performing some R&D. I do have a lot of options but I need to pick a direction early in the war and push hard. I've decided to push for Air/Naval as a 1-2 punch for Japan with the grunts getting the left-overs. I have plans for those long-legged LB - hence going after Hawaii. Subs with naval search plus long-legged search planes on the line islands, LB @ Hawaii, and raider CV TFs plus a heavy sub footprint should, I hope, meet my desires. I'd like to really try to reduce yanky merchant shipping ASAP as I drive into the DEI and up into Burma/India.

It's my hope that I can conclude ground operations around Hawaii within 60 days and then leave a strong naval/air arm @ Hawaii while dropping the blodded divisions & support elements back down to the PI and DEI.

Status: offline 		So far so good. I note though that, in the end. CAAA ( Anti-Aircraft Armoured Cruiser ) Nemo-san ended up getting the worst of that confrontation - given that she's worth about 2/3rds of an IJN BB to sink 2 or 3 DDs and need a few months in dock repairing after isn't that great.

Still, strategically Hawaii seems to be going your way. Can you let us in to the overall strategic plan?

Status: offline 		Respectfully I would suggest that Nemo-san did not get the worst of it. The CLAA went up against 8 DD and drove them off. Those AP she was protecting carried the 201st Division and they hardly were touched. 1 AP took 1 shell for 13 casualties. Nemo-san took 2 torpedoes and her damage ratings for the last few days have been going down – 44/62/18 – 47/62/5 – 47/57/1 so she’ll be fine. The DDs she went up against all received extra damage or were sunk as TB/DD from KB had an enhancement to their search functions from the damage the DDs took (in other words they were smokin’ – lol).

Yes Nemo-san is gunna take some repairs but I added the CLAA for its AAA and was greatly surprised at how well it fared against a TF of 8DD. It was my intent to add a pair of DD to that TF from my CV Air Suport that is following the landing TF - I just needed one more turn to get it done and Jack caught me with my shorts down. In truth, I was expecting a constant buzz of allied aircraft against my landing TFs and am quite pleased with how effective KB has been in damaging the airfield and pulling the teeth from Jack’s air arm.

As to strategy – I’m gunna try to take what I can and hold on to the Tiger’s tail in mid/late 43 as the allies get their toys. I've decided to push for Air/Naval as a 1-2 punch for Japan with the grunts getting the leftovers. I have plans for those long-legged LBs - hence going after Hawaii. Subs with naval search plus long-legged search planes on the Line Islands, LB @ Hawaii, and raider CV TFs plus a heavy sub footprint should, I hope, meet my desires. I'd like to really try to reduce yanky merchant shipping ASAP as I drive into the DEI and up into Burma/India. It's my hope that I can conclude ground operations around Hawaii within 60 days and then leave a strong naval/air arm (plus Bde sized garrison units) @ Hawaii while dropping the newly blooded Japanese divisions & support elements back down to the PI and DEI.

In China I’ll try to hold the line while using the backdoor of Burma to catch China between the hammer and anvil. The Russian front is slated to open up in August of 43 so I’ll use most of the Manchukeo support units (not INF) to bolster the CEA forces and use China as my training area for pilots.

I'm actually gunna try to mass my artillery units and see how loads of ART affect the dice rolls in China as well as at sieges of Manila and Singapore.

From the production/economy side of the game I’ll select a few airframes that will meet my needs and build just enough of the rest to get my replacements prior to upgrading them to the airframes I’m mass producing.

In truth though – I really want to win the battle @ sea and in the air by sinking everything that floats so I think I really need the raiding CV TFs, subs, mines, and recon/naval search. I’m really curious to see how those 264 LB models will work from Hawaii for a start. I think I just need to make sure I have decent-sized bases in strategic locations to provide that kind of air support based on whatever front(s) Jack uses when he counters.

Anyway – those are my thoughts today – Sept 2 of 2009. I reserve the right to change my mind <grin>.

Besides, I dont want to give all of my tricks away; I still plan on playing Alfred with this mod some day <grin>.

Status: offline 		Artillery won't effect the combat AVs much due to the over-simplistic combat model.

Since artillery have a firepower but NOT an AV (in most mods, including in most artillery units in this mod ) they will gave an effect on the fire phase of the assault but won't contribute to the total AV in the hex and thus won't effect the base combat AV by much. Sure they'll blow a few Chinese squads to hell and thus reduce that AV a bit but even if they inflict 300 casualties in a bombardment that represents the loss of only about 10 AV and when the Chinese have 20,000 AV in-theatre 10 AV really isn't much.

- Sorry - I couldn't resist. I'm still gunna do this tho. Of course I plan to supplement the odds of my ground forces by targeting china's supplies with LB...

Try gaming a normal Japanese/Chinese battle in an urban/mountain hex with and without 10 artillery units added to the Japanese forces... You might be suprised at the effects on the chinese troops over a period of 7 days or so. Or you can also observe the effects of 10 artillery pieces or so to your stack against a shock attack from the Chinese.

So far, I've come to the conclusion that more is better when it comes to artillery. What I see in regards to game mechanics is that arty pulls supplies to the japanese units. At the end of a turn, so as long as I have a good supply path to the LCU, my supplies for my combat units increase.

Because I plan on putting most of my resources into air/naval assets I need to fight smart with my ground forces. It's not just about the AV in China - it's about the bonuses for 2X supplies, and HQ, and terrain modifiers...

As to the effects of artillery... I haven't observed this at all and don't see why it would be any different to normal units bombarding but the best of luck to you. If it makes a significant difference I'm open to a new data point.

Status: offline 		In China, I would use the "flying artillery" due to the benefits of the increased disruption of enemy LCU and their low to non-existing flak to take a toll of your LBA. Artillery helps in long term seige warfare on a base, but not so much in short term battles. I don't know how it is moddled, but the effectiveness should be directly related to terrain and fort levels. If your in a clear hex without any forts should be murder for anyones troops.

Upgrade Claudes @ Truk and Palau

KB should hit Kwajalein for resupplies/replacements. I've lost a lot of Kates and Vals tho - and have a limited pool - 22 Val 52 Kate... Things should get - interesting.

Mini-KB should hit Johnston this turn too. Johnston had 19k supplies last turn - should be above 20k next turn.

8k of fuel should hit Johnston next turn too.

Lotsa construction units unloading @ Johnston - port is building up fast now.

Yamato is close to Kwajalein - might join KB there - we'l see. I need to hammer PH fast to shut down the airfield - too many LB flying out of there.

Troops @ San Fernando are moving to Lingayan

Troops @ Baguio are moving for Clark

The JAAF 3rd EAB is unloading @ Aparri and I've already moved a few air units over to continue hitting Manila. I'll be pounding the airfields of Bataan and Manila now.
