Guadalcanal AE AAR Allied NoJoe

Post by Nikademus »

as opposed to "GO JOE" for GI Joe fans.

This is the Allied AAR side of the equation.

I am your general.......MacNik. I'm also the scenario designer because.......like Mac....i think i'm god and it's no fun to play a scenario if you can't make the rules. [:D]

Ok...seriously.

Joe wanted me to give some background. So....."background"

This is a port of the original stock Guad-Mod i created for stock a year or so ago. It's primary objective is to put the respective commander's in as much of the shoes of the actual players as possible. "Watchtower" as the operation was known to the Allied side was also called "The Shoestring campaign" and for good reason. Unlike typical campaign scenarios, devices, fuel, shipping and supply are not available in abundance allowing the player to do whatever they want when they want it.

Given the objective, the goal in game terms comes down to what i call "limited options" Some players may not like this being used to exploring "what if's" to various degrees. If thats you.....this isn't a scenario you are going to enjoy. How are these limited options realized? Primarily through logistics in two ways.

1) Both sides get a much reduced daily allottment of fuel and supply. Run your ships around too much and your going to have problems. Allow a buildup and you can "surge"

2) SPS values of bases have been altered.

Most of the bases on the map have had their values changed from stock AE to better represent the reality facing both sides during this period. The most common value is (0)0 for airfields and ports. You can still under the general game rules build here...up to 3 levels.....it will just take forever and alot of resources. This design decision was especially important for the Japan side because the first thing every Japan player does in such a scenario is not make the mistake the Japanese did in real life......wage war on Lunga from Rabaul...a base in reality too far away to be effective. Players will instead build a chain of interlinked bases......sweep and bombard Lunga to death...game over. Not here. Here you mainly get what the Japanese GHQ begot you.....a major base at Rabaul......minor bases at Shortlands and Lae and Buna. Good luck soldier.

The Americans on the same token did not have the resources at the time to go building up the chain so Lunga and Tulagi, and PM and Milne Bay become key points for them as well.

There's two more major changes in this scenario to implement the goal.

a) Restricted HQ use.

The Japan player starts the game with an almost insurmountable handicap in ground forces and those they get over time will be matched to a degree by those coming in the pipeline for the Allies. IF the first thing a Japan player does is build a base network closer to Lunga....then the first thing an Allied player does is move every available LCU to the front line bases and dig in. Not here.

Here, you'll find almost all the starting LCU's assigned to restricted HQ's. To free up a unit, you have to pay the political cost. Here's the kicker. As allied player you have to split these PP's between the two major commands. (SW and SOPAC) so the Allied player is faced with a choice of prioritizing which area he wants to reinforce. Use of restricted HQ's also helps curb mass divisional level reinforcement or greater all at once. This makes the game more interesting and better represents the fact that the Allied commanders were not at liberty to focus only on the front line bases but also had to contend with rear base garrison requirements.

b) No transport planes.

Yes, i know there were some present. Not in the scenario. why? Transport planes are accurately represented in the game in regards to capacity. What they move however is not. Supply points by necessity in this game, AE or otherwise, are an abstract concept. A supply point represents everything from a bean, to a bullet, to a barrel of avgas, to a 240mm artillery shell. As such, you automatically have a greatly enhanced transport force that both sides can utilize. Doing so defeats the purpose of representing the state of siege in the game and the importance of gaining and maintaining sea control in order for the front line bases to survive. Hence....no transport planes.

Thats pretty much it outside of minor OOB changes, the biggest from stock Guad being that Japan gets very very few ENG reinforcments that of the Base force variety. This again further limits that side's ability to build new airbases within the breadth of the scenario. This again is to require that side to fight from the prinicpal bases from which she did during the campaign. Yes the GHQ was negligent in affording the SoPac region with a good logistical support net. You, taking on the role of Yamamotto are stuck with that decision by and large.....just as Ghorm and Mac are stuck with what supply they get to forward their goals.

and here now lies, Guadalcanal, the official version for AE. Its a mod of sorts given what i've described, but its not a big mod like Nikmod. (that might come later [:D] ) I hope you enjoy it because i got squat for building it. Joe promised me a date with Jessica Alba but so far hasn't come through.

and now.....the war.

****

Not much happens in the first two days. Normal. 30th Oz Brigade, a militia unit, successfully holds off "Hori Force" as it continues it's overland attempt to assault and take Port Morosby. I'm using my airpower to try and support the boys on the ground. Every little bit helps.....a few points of disruption can make or break an attack. Here, and in lieu of any air support from distant Rabaul, the tactic worked....the Banzai attack is defeated with heavy Japanese casualties.

My plan:

Take Lunga and Tulagi.....hold PM and MB if i can. To harrass Rabaul a squadron of B-17's has been moved to PM and assigned night missions for the time being. If i'm feeling that Joe is not setting a CAP i'll take a stab at daylight. I'm also sending a reinforcement 5 x DD group to bolster the defense of the Tulagi landing force. You can never be too careful. As the situation develops, i'll post a screnie or two.

I shall return.

RE: Guadalcanal AE AAR Allied NoJoe

Post by Nikademus »

Allied landings at Watchtower targets begin. No air resistance or sea resistance in sight. CD's manage to cripple one AP but otherwise operations go smoothly. Fierce air combat over Milne Bay and Horri Force. Japanese land based bombers pummell MB airfield. Invasion prep? Maybe. MB is often a fun "easy" option.....that is, if the Allied player allows it. Oz troops dig in further. They start at level 2 and I'm beginning the accumulation of PP's necessary to free up a brigade of the 7th Oz Division to reinforce the position.

Air battle intel indicates 4 Zeros shot down in exchange for 2 P40's and 3 P-39's.

screenie showing my positions off Watchtower. My plan is to withdraw LRCAP at this point.....having lost 4 Wildcats to ops due to it. I'll move the carriers off a couple hexes to prevent being tagged. I know subs will be on the way soon. All forces are landed and ordered to shock attack.

Great reading! I'm enjoying the other side too, so I won't comment on strategy or tactics.
As allied player you have to split these PP's between the two major commands. (SW and SOPAC)
Are SWPAC and SOPAC themselves restricted commands in this scenario, then? For that matter, is the Southeast Fleet a restricted command for Japan too?

Typo in oob?

In the list of defending units for a japanese bombardment you have -- 1st USMC Amphb Tank Battalion - should this not be Light or just plain Tank Battalion.

The USMC Amphb Tank Battalions formed in '43'

Excellent work[&o]

Looking forward to the rest of the AAR

No, but there are there are two additional Allied commands which are restricted: I'll show screenies of them below:

Japan player actually doesn't have restricted HQ's. This is because they start with so few troops that its not necessary. They start the game with only one substantial body of them, "Hori Force" aka the South Seas Detachment and attached units charged with assaulting PM. In order to pevent a typical hindsight move in that dept (withdraw the units and immed send to Lunga), i placed them inland. A Japan player can pull them out....but i'll take time and also fairly ceedes PM to the Allies.

at the time the unit in question was an organic part of 1st USMC div but i opted to represent it as a seperate LCU unit. I had to make a number of arbitrary decisions on which smaller units (below regimental level) to represent specifically. Some units were formed as part of specific ops.

Lunga and Tulagi fall. The latter putting up a tougher fight but ultimately falling just the same. Defeated the Japanese may be here but the supply situation is precarious. I will need to immediately attempt a resupply effort to ensure their comfort and to not impede the building of fortificaitons. Lunga TF is currently on the way back to Luganaville to pick up a base force designated to develop the completed airfield on Lunga allowing the first planes to be staged from there.

On the NG front......B-17's encounter a wierd varient of Zeke. It has floats. cute.

screenie shows Lunga base, now under new management.

Other news: 25th Brigade of the 7th Oz division is loading to reinforce Milne Bay. MB is often a target of crafty Japanese....i figure putting a 2nd Bde there will make it a fight if nothing else.

They seem almost suspiciously hale and harty for being stuck on a piece of real estate like the Kokoda.

The AF at Lunga is 2(0), is it worth it to try to expand it to 3(0)??

Joe has always been fond of sticking the snouts of submarines into a port hex he suspects heavy traffic will visit. Here at Luganaville, as in the past, he quickly pays the price. Worse, it looks to be one of the minelayer Iboats IIRC......worse for him as they arn't the best at defensive evasion. My DD's pound it into alleged scrap.

Kenney's B-17's visit Rabaul again from high alt. We hit squat but the gunners get to practice again as the funny looking Zekes vainly try to chase down our high flying bombers. Aussie and American pilots continue to harrass Hori's positions in front of the 30th Brigade. All has been quiet here since the first failed Banzai attack and there's been no support forthcoming from Base Air Force at Rabaul. Must be something else on Tojo's mind. [:D]

More of the same on day 2. Rabaul is mostly silent and save for a few confirmed sightings of submarines, there's no sign of Imperial activity anywhere. Of course i know this will soon change. I am currently busy loading up the 31st USN Base force for Lunga duty as well as loading supply for both newly captured bases which are already in critical status for supply. Lunga now has built rudimentary fortifications with what supply they have. I have moved my carriers south of Lunga to provide distant cover while a reinforced cruiser TF guards the 31st Base force on it's journey. The key now is to avoid Iboats. One good torpedo salvo can change the balance of power quickly and the only US card in this game are it's carriers. Hence it becomes a cat and mouse game as i try to make joe guess where i'll position them in relation to his sub net.

Very little action for this two day set. The convoy bearing the 31st USN Base Force is within 40 miles of Lunga and is under heavy escort. I am moving my carriers to a position NE of Lunga, ready to intercept any thrusts from Truk. I'm currently resting and refitting the B-17 squadron using Port Morosby. I'll resume harrasement raids probably next turn.
