AFTER ACTION REPORTS FOR 09/29/22

DDs Mikazuki, Urukaze, Kuwa, Matsu, and Hishi spotted off Hiroshima.

ML Sokuten Maru caught unescorted south of Davao and sunk.

British troops, spearheaded by elements of 2nd Indian division and former Shanghai garrison, land at Naha. This is the first recorded Allied offensive of this campaign.

AFTER ACTION REPORTS FOR 09/30/22

DDs Matsu, Hishi, and Kuwa are sunk, as an audacious British-American carrier group sneaks right into Hiroshima harbor.

DDs Yomogi, Numakaze, and Tade are spotted nearby.

A lot of ground action. Fighting continues at La Foa, where French troops are battling 5th Japanese division. Thursday island is aflame; a mixture of Australian and Dutch units is holding back against 1st Japanese division. More shrapnel flying over Lingayen.

Naha falls. This is the first Japanese-held territory to be captured by Allied forces.

AFTER ACTION REPORTS FOR 10/01/22

AFTER ACTION REPORTS FOR 10/02/22

Allied convoy at Naha gets ambushed by a hastily assembled Japanese force:

Night Time Surface Combat, near Naha at 54,46

Japanese Ships
BB Tosa, Shell hits 91, on fire
BC Hiei
CA Aso, Shell hits 5
DD Numakaze
DD Yomogi
DD Tade

Allied Ships
CA Charleston, Shell hits 1
CA Missoula, Shell hits 3, on fire

CL Birmingham
CL Albany, Shell hits 14, and is sunk
DD Schley, Shell hits 1
DD Waters
DD Badger
DD Boggs
DD Kilty
DD Upshur

Huron sinks the next day, Missoula's fate still hangs in balance. Huron is the heaviest American ship (8" guns) to be sunk to date.
One of Huron's shells pierces Tosa's main belt, causing a shipwide explosion. I estimate system damage to be in 40s. Tosa is seen on fire later that day, fleeing east, supposedly towards Kagoshima. Everything that can move is thrown to intercept.

DDs Tsubaki, Nara, and Enoki are spotted by Hiroshima.

In Australia, the remaining Japanese troops are being rounded up and assaulted. It is estimated that Australian invasion will have cost IJA a grand total of 22 units.

October 7, 1922 shall be forever etched in Navy archives as a day when nearly impossible happened. Battleship Tosa - and very likely battlecruiser Hiei as well - were sunk, and the lion's share of that is due to relentless destroyers of Royal Navy and USN and to a handful of outdated cruisers of both fleets.

It took 301 shell and 2 torpedoes to take down Tosa. Crippled and likely sunk Hiei got 234 shells and 1 torpedo.

Allied casualties? 1 CA 3 DD sunk, a good dozen of ships of all sizes maimed. A collateral casualty was CV Argus, left without escort as every single ship had been thrown at Tosa.

From the highest VP value - down.

CA Aso with its 40 points just barely failed to make the cut :)

American ASW groups claim another Japanese sub. A couple of Japanese transports sink in the night - need to double-check past sub activity for unclaimed kills.

Most damaged ships made it to safe harbors and aren't in danger of sinking. That includes both destroyers that had to limp to Syndey and various ships from Tosa affair who are either to Hong Kong or almost there. The only ones I have to keep an eye out on are BB California (location classified due to enemy activity), CA Missoula (at Naha) and a CL (forgot the name) at Cairns.

IJN Mutsu and Nagato appear off Port Moresby and disintegrate all my forces there. Three old BBs are sunk, two more - damaged, a good dozen destroyers is lost as well.

When Royal Navy shows up in a few days it was going to take positions off Kagoshima; now it's heading down to Oz, for this southern threat has to be dealt with.

AFTER ACTION REPORTS FOR 10/12/22

S-15 shells AK Nagato Maru.

IJA captures Lingayen. I initiated strategic withdrawal from that area a week ago as my forces were taking heavy casualties. So were the Japanese, so a cease-fire was negotiated. My troops have since fortified in Manila.

AFTER ACTION REPORTS FOR 10/13/22

Japanese troops northeast of Wyndham have been reduced to shreds.

AFTER ACTION REPORTS FOR 10/14/22

Only 5 IJA units are remaining from Wyndham task force - 22 units - in a Japanese attempt to control Australia.

On October 15, 1922 Allies get reinforcements from Royal Navy. They are not overly impressive - but when all you got is what you see below, even those older dreadnoughts are welcome...

Overview of USN BBs experience gains - 4/27/2009 4:20:42 AM

I wanted to examine how much experience my capital ships have earned since the beginning of the campaign. In last seven days there were almost a dozen capital ships severely damaged or even sunk; I need to find out why.

Name: Day experience as of 10/16/22 (gain over 5/31/22) / Night experience as of 10/16/22 (gain over 5/31/22)

California: 67 (+2) / 63 (+43)
Georgia: 67 (+2) / 56 (+36)
Idaho: 67 (+2) / 58 (+38)
Mississippi: 66 (+1) / 63 (+43)
Nebraska: 73 (+8) / 59 (+39)
Nevada: 62 (0) / 32 (+12) Undergoing scheduled upgrades for the last 2 1/2 months
New Mexico: 70 (+5) / 60 (+40)
New York: 68 (+3) / 62 (+42)
Oklahoma: 70 (+5) / 60 (+40) Undergoing scheduled upgrades for the last 2 1/2 months
Oregon: 67 (+2) / 61 (+41)
Pennsylvania: 74 (+9) / 60 (+40)
Rhode Island: 70 (+5) / 57 (+37)
Tennessee: 70 (+5) / 64 (+44)
Texas: 75 (+10) / 61 (+40)

It appears that in the first four months of the war battleships have quickly increased night experience levels, which is understandable - they start off only at 20. Day experience gains were minor.

It may be necessary to hold Royal navy back for a bit to give those ships a chance to get some experience. They have arrived with high day experience levels (low 70s), but only moderate night experience levels (30s to 40s). As a result, they may be assigned to bombardment missions at first.

Not much going on. IJA group in Australia has been annihilated. More shots exchanged in French Polynesia. In New Guinea at Thursday island, IJA probes my defenses for the first time in almost a month.

IJA seems to have given up on French Polynesia. When Japanese first landed there, it was a blow. The only level-9-capable port in the area was protected by two starved base forces and an HQ. A decisive attack here could have seriously impeded my ability to resupply in south pacific.

Luckily, the attack never came. I had time to pull French forces (although 2/3 of 10th RMIC are now fish food) from Saigon. I am reinforcing the area with New Zealand troops as well.

In other news, S-6 placed a torpedo amid BB Shikishima. Let's see if it survives.
