Today I met a grizzled old WWII vet at our rural post office in northwestern Georgia. He sported a "USS Satyr ARL xxx" (I didn't note the ship number) cap. He explained that his ship was a converted LST that repaired landing craft. He served from the Okinawa campaign of WWII through the Korean War. But for WitP, I wouldn't have had any idea what an AR was so I'm reminded once again that our game is educational too.

The Satyr had quite the history:

The guy sitting behind me worked in and around the Seneca Shipyards that built this (and a LOT of other landing craft).  His friend owns it now.  I pointed this out yesterday to him, and I am STILL hearing stories about that place  .

That is really cool Dan!

I presented to a group of Veteran's at my Father's Good Samaritan on Tuesday.  Seven of the vets were from WWII.  One flew B-25J's against Japanese shipping in New Guinea, Philippines, and Okinawa, another flew A-26's at the very end fo the war, and a third was a mechanic on the CVE Charger training new navy pilots off the East Coast.

It was pretty cool to chat with them.

Thanks for the link, Terminus.  Boy is that vet going to be surprised the next time I bump into him at the post office:  "Hello, Sir, so you served on the USS Satyr under Captain Gavigan?  I understand your ship broke down on the way to Okinawa and had to put into Saipan."
