Wikipedia is starting to post 100k images from German Federal Archive (http://www.bild.bundesarchiv.de/)

quote:

Starting on Thursday Dec 4, 2008, Wikimedia Commons will witness a massive upload of new images. We are anticipating about 100,000 files from a donation from the German Federal Archive

Looking at images is nice, but the fantastic thing about this is the license: "These images are licensed Creative Commons Attribution ShareAlike 3.0 Germany License". IANAL, but I believe that makes it possible to actually USE these images (for free), for instance in wargames (as long as care is taken to not violate the ShareAlike part of the license), and that the archives have actually signed an agreement verifying that they have the right to distribute those images (many 'public domain' photos you find on the internet are difficult or impossible to verify if you may actually use).
