When a player has to continue backing up, it appears that they are very slow to respond to a play. A defensive player in zone coverage with automatically backpeddle to the center and back of the zone if he is in front of that point and not given another command. After any Move To: commands, the player will also backpeddle to the center and back of whichever zone he is in at that point. This change was made in July of 2007 to keep plays in front of zone coverage. There was supposed to be a deep zone maximum drop back of someplace around 20 yards off the LOS, but I have not looked at that in quite a while.
