OK, so I can't stump the experts with photos of ships so maybe this can tease a few brain cells.

Where is this?

Remembered seeing this photograph before: Rendova, June 1943.

I find this photo just fascinating...

A picture taken in some relative backwater in the world, an island with seemingly no real significance, yet in 1943, it had great significance to these guys.

Same could be said of a few other places, Attu & Kiska, Guadalcanal, Iwo Jima, El Alamein, Alam el Halfa Ridge, Bir Hachiem, Nyaukedauk Pass, Makin & Tarawa!

I wonder if it was better to die for Stalingrad, Arnhem, Monte Cassino or for some god forsaken dot on a map??

Bill Mauldin's book "UP FRONT" had a Willie and Joe cartoon of the two GI's sitting in a hole and one was saying to the other: "The hell this isn't the most important hole in the world...it's the one I'm in!"

Exactly the impression I get when I look at that picture.

or Moratia.

Or Pelileu... Or the Hürtgen Forest... Those are two of the most useless pieces of real estate that soldiers died for in WWII.
