Testing of Piepsk scen.

I'm running through turn 13 of Piepsk, thiings going fairly well.

But as Russians are closing in on Piepsk central, I managed to get close enough to start mounting units into bldgs.

First squad mounted fine in this particular building.

A few turns later I attempted to mount the second squad in the building and it ened up being placed way off-map (see screen shot).

I tried a couple of time-same result.

I also checked another building and had same problem.

I checked back in SceneEdit and dug out this info for this particular building:

mediaID: bifgho4t
buidling type: Light_SquadCount2_OneStory.

OK - I know I set the building type when I buildt the scenario, but if I recall some of the discusions, these structures also require "mount points".

Might this problem be caused by either not having a 2nd mount point, or perhaps a 'bad' mount point?

I think this building is from Saf Biffa's buidling packs.

Thanks!
Rick

Rick,

I checked the bifgho4t X model ... apparently he has only 3 bone's installed on the model which = 1 squad. There should be a minimum of 6 bones (two 3-man squads) assigned to buildings.

I could check the other "bif" structures but it will take me awhile ... in the meantime it seems we can't use his structures for more than one squad .

Thanks for cheking!!

Rick,

All his models appear to have 3 bones ... except for the following INDUSTRIAL ...

1. bifact1
2. bifact2
3. biffacof

... these have 6 bones (two squads).

I think all buildings should have 6 mount points and all destroyed building should have 3.

Thanks Rob - I'll go back and either switch to different building models, or make them 1 squad bldgs. After I posted my problem, I went in and for the specific bldg, changed it to one squad and it elimiated the starnge behavior, of course I could only fit one squad in it then.

I'll have to think about which way to go.

Does anyone know if there is a way to identify building capacity in-game? Since that's a function of the editor (setting the building capacity), it would seem like there should be a way in the game to determine capacity, (so you dont send too many squads to occupy a building.

Thanks,
Rick

Still playing through my test - I've decided to use a different minmap. The current minimap makes it hard to follow units. I decided to try out the original base Squad Leader map that this map is based on. I'd welcome any comments.

I had also considered trying to mod this minimap by converting the green "open" area to white to reflect the date (winter), and Perhaps the yellow wheat fields to brown which would mean needing to change the brown elevations to a couple of different colors to avoid confusion. In the end I elected to try this out.

I may experiment, but again, I'd like opinions from others as well.

I'm going to check a few other scenarios to see how the bldg capacity is in practice. I think I should [robably try to be consistent. I checked the old SL rules and didn't find anything that would limit stacking in bldgs beyond the base 3 squads per hex.

Again, input would be welcome.

Thanks
Rick

And here is the minmap with the SL board, but recolored to reflect winter snow (appropriate for this battle).

Any thoughts?

Rick

Hello:

It is lovely to see those ASL maps!

Have many ASL scenarios been converted?

Thanks,

Gerry

Theres a Capture of Balta Scenario you can find here in the mods section, though it was done before Stridor made his MapMaker tool (Capture of Balta was actually a Cross of Iron scenario I think). So it uses a modified map to approximate the SL map.

I think Mraah also was working on Hill 621.

I'm going through now to make some adjustments to the buildings in Piepsk, so it will be a few days. I'll post here when it's ready for testing (I'm playing through as Russian;s against Germain AI and I'm on turn 20 - and even though I know the setup, I'm still enjoying it.).

Mraah provided digital copies of the SL boards, and I used them to make the PCK maps. (I had tried approximating them first, but the actual boards made it much easier (and more faithful to the original).

Hey you guys. Instead of making a copy of a SL map which is a hex representation of the actual map why don't you just make a PCK map of the actual map?

Good point, although in the case of Piepsk, it was a fictional encounter, in so far as I can determine.

Ok - I've finished re-arranging buildings. While doing that, I decided to go ahead and stick with building models that had snow, so I went ahead and swapped those in as well.

I also decided to use a particular model to represent the SL "stone" buldings. I picked one model and only use it for the SL single hex stone building. I also ended up moving the church. I really wanted to keep one of bif's building model as I thought it looked good, but since I could only get the one squad in it, it just didn't fit. So I moced the church to that location.

I could probably keep tweaking with the map, adding fences, and lots of other neat doodads, but then I'd probably never get it out. So I finished my first test. And it turned out ok. I played Russian side (this is a Russian attack Scenario). Ended up with a marginal victory on turn 25.

I had originally set game length to 30 (and then German started picking up VP's). I think I'll cut this back to 25, maybe even to 23.

I still need check what files and mods are now needed. And I need to package it up for both the mod manager install, as well as the plain old install.

Below is a screenshot of the final end game victory screen:

Hey! Yes most of my buildings only have 3 mountpoints/one squad, since they're mostly small huts, larger buildings like the factories as you guys have already noticed have more. This was following Stridors instructions once the mount point problem was solved by him.

It was totally intentional, I decided to see if anybody wanted more mount points when I released the beta, I left it a week or so, waited for comments/suggestions and heard nothing so decided it would be ok.

SAF,

I'm still using your larger buildings (from the Industrial directory). I wondered about the stacking limits and almost decided to set them all at one squad/bldg. But then I reread the squead leader and decided since I was trying to recreate one of their scenarios, I'd go with the full two squads. (SL actually allows 3 squads I think).

In any event, thanks for the buildings!

Didn't you just have a new addition to the family? I remember those first few weeks.

Yup Rick, my domestic scene is one of devastation, having a 2 year old charging around and a very demanding 2 month old, still waiting to get into a managable routine. Only really have a couple of hours at night so only playing rather than modding to relax a bit. Playing Mount & Blade, I find cutting down ranks of infantry very destressing after a day of doing House Dad stuff. I might mod the enemy foot into babys.

2 year old is currently sitting on the Naughty Spot as I type...

I'll be back doing some more terrain... once this war is over.

I have a few models for large row houses that can be fitted together to give the appearance of larger buildings. Like Biffa, I've gotten pretty busy (but with boring old work, not babies)and never polished them off.

Give me a bit, and I'll up them to get them included in the map maker.

I recall when mine were that age, I actually had the original Squad Leader set up on the dining room table - You can can guess how badly the oldest wanted to be able to reach those colorful cardboard counters. I can't count how many skirmishes were lost to the baby monster from outerspace.

Good luck! (and enjoy it while you can - really).
