Yep, they're para chutes. (Sorry about the pun.) My father-in-law was in a TBF on the Princeton and said it seemed like all he ever did was stare out the windows (itty biitty ones at that) and drop flares out of the chutes. I think he said he was the radioman, but I might be mistaken. Once every "combat" patrol mission, he'd get to test fire the turret MGs -- his only fun. He spent about six months doing that, then rotated off the ship. A few days (or weeks) later it was sunk. He's gone now, so I can't ask him, but how much action did the Princeton see in those months before it was sunk? He said he missed all of the action for one reason or another, but I never asked what or where it was. At the time, I didn't have much interest in the Pac War. Pre-WITP, obviously.
