The Japanese was Reisen, literally 'Zero Fighter'.

As was pointed out, this name comes from the Japanese calender year of service entry, which was the new year of the century. This is the reason you will see other Japanese aircraft referred to as a 'Type 97', 'Type 98', etc. The 'type' is just the year designation.

Excellent point Gregg and Great Obsevation .... The type 97 Tank ( and type 97Machine gun) was produced in 1937. No way they could have been produced by the Japanese in 1897 ...... Bravo :)

This designation was introduced in Dec 1926 (2586), when emperor Showa (also known as Hirohito) started his reign.

Before this, "Type xx" denotes the year of the reign of the actual emperor. The Type 38 rifle was introduced in 1905 - the 38th year of the reign of emperor Meiji (1967-1912), the Type 11 Nambu pistol in 1922 - the 11th year of the Taisho era (1912-1926).
