Generator maps

SPWaW is a tactical squad-level World War II game on single platoon or up to an entire battalion through Europe and the Pacific (1939 to 1945).

Generator maps

Post by Stvitus2002 »

Hello all, I'm involved in a long(200)battle campaign(generator). The generated maps
are boring, especially compared with the custom maps by Wild Bill, Redleg, & others. Is there any way to include these maps into the campaign generator?

Also, there are buttons for "plains" terrain, "desert", "mountain", "jungle","forest".
Why no "urban(city)" terrain?

The "forest" map is a joke, trees on both edges, with a big clearing conveniently in the middle. Not much different that a "plains" map.

Why doesn't the AI's reinforcements arrive at the top or bottom of the map? Although
i enjoy kicking the AI's backside, less predictability would be a good thing.

Does "enhanced" address any of these issues?

Generated maps are all you get with the Long campaign, suggest playing a user designed campaign for better maps and games.
Enhanced unfortunately cannot help with generated maps in the long campaign.

The AI's reinforcements don't enter from the top or bottom for the same reason your's don't, either: the Reinforcement Flags are positioned on the left and right by default, unless using a designer campaign or scenario. Even in PBEM games, the Retreat/Reinforcement Flags are automatically grouped along the left and right sides...

Generated campaigns are never as thrilling as those made by real humans; the game's random map creator and deployment routine are substandard elements, IMHO.

I can understand that, but how hard could it be to make the reinforcement hex variable?

Example: Set X=Random number (range 1-3)
If X=1 Flag goes to top of map
If X=2 Flag goes to bottom of map
If X=3 Flag goes to far edge of map

I'm not a programmer , but that doesn't seem like rocket science to me.

It isn't, but there won't be anymore work done on the game code. So I wouldn't hold my breath...[;)]

Yeah,it sounds like SPWAW,is essentially DOA, despite all the work by the people at the Depot(enhanced, Etc). Unless... somebody is working on a FAR superior replacement for
SPWAW. Hmmmmm..........[:D]

I prefer to think of it as "frozen in time" or "timeless" instead of DOA. [;)]
With its flaws, it's still the best game.[8D]
But yes, it really would be cool to have an upgrade [:(]

The generated maps aren't that bad.I actually enjoy random battles and campaigns. Random battles and campaigns are a great way to quickly get into a fight if you are tired of scenarios and you can always use custom maps for the battle generater anyways.

You can't use custom maps for campaign generator, but definitly battle generator. There is a large library of custom maps that already come with the game. For more maps, come to the depot:

http://www.spwaw.com/phpBB2/viewforum.php?f=72

Some links are old and don't work anymore, but most of them still do.

Pointer:

Deployment for you and enemy units must be done manually for tiny maps or units will end up off the map and unplayable.Thats because these aren't official map sizes and the computer still thinks it's a bigger map.
