Is there someone looking out of the turret?? Was that common practice?

You people completely amaze me in your ability to name a ship from such a limited photo.

I have been contemplating posting a close-up of a rivit on the side of a head, but there would probably be 5 people that would guess the correct ship in under 2 minutes.

The guns are normally fired by "remote control" from the fire control director. The person whose head is visible atop the turret is the "Mount Captain" who will direct the fire of the mount should the fire control director be knocked out/comms lost.

And how anybody guessed USS ALASKA from that photo I will never fathom.

Grrr. I deleted the CB1 name before "gunnery practice", but now I see this was not enough.

NEXT time I will be more thorough, I might even throw in some disinformation...

Lots of color pics of Alaska floating about - usually if a color pic turns up, the first thought is "Alaska" - second thought: "colorized"...

EDIT: Lesson: Convert your color photos of Alaska to Black and White before posting them as a quiz!
