Well I have tried two different 9800 GX2 cards, and both flaked out on me. Luckily EVGA took them back. The second one died from heat issues, and it was so hot that after an hour my system would shut down. I did a search on the web and found that indeed this card does have heat problems. I guess I will just have to wait for a month or two until they get this series sorted out (9900?). For now Iam switching to the 8800 ultra. So far everything I have read says this is a stable card. This is in an EVGA 780i sli mobo. My case was a coolmaster cosmos with 4 120mm fans with 850 power supply. I experimented with an 8800 GTX and my system ran smooth and cool, just not as fast as I wanted.

I just thought some of you would want to know if you are putting together a new system. The 9800 GX2 doesnt' appear ready for prime time, although it was extremely fast while it ran...

Of course all of this is only my personal experience. YMMV...

Far as I know it's a beefed up 8800 core. For a really big improvement we'll have to wait for the next card, due in ... july? So, unless you have a really *really* old card, it's not worth the cash.

Cards like that and other top-end video cards usually work best with after market cooling.
Other tips to help keep temps down is make sure your case is not cluttered inside with wires,
Make sure your cooling fans are working together, iow, don't have them all exhausting out or sucking in.
Common sense plays a big role here.

Gem35,

9800 GX2 is to new, no aftermarket coolers that I could find.  My computer case is plenty big with very little clutter, and fans are working and exhausting properly.  The card just runs to hot, and I agree if they had made an aftermarket cooler for this particular card that would not have voided the warranty, I would have gone with it.  I have not read anything negative about the 8800 Ultra other than it's expensive.
