ORIGINAL: Gerry Hello All: Trying to understand MTRs. I think with the smaller one (60mm?) I have been able to use direct fire and indirect fire (latter comes in at start of next turn I believe). Is that true/possible? In the manual it says that indirect fire affects all units in a hex. How does one get a MTR to use indirect vs direct fire? If you were firing outside visibility range would that be indirect fire? Or is it something else.. Most artillery pieces can fire directly or indirectly; from mortar to heavy howitzers. In essence, if you can see it, you can fire directly at it - hence Direct Fire. Using Direct Fire means you are targeting an individual opposing unit, as opposed to blanketing a target hex when using Indirect Fire. You can still use an artillery piece to fire Indirectly on a hex that is Line of Sight by using the Artillery Dialogue available in the bottom right area of the screen. quote:
ORIGINAL: Gerry Thanks in advance for any help. I would appreciate any tactical help also on the scenario. I got a Draw but I am assuming one should be doing much better in the bootcamps? The HMG in the hilltop objective hex is a killer so I am trying to fire on it with the 81mm or smoke it but only have 3 rounds of smoke. I'd have to look at the scenario again, it's been a very long time. General tactical advice though: Avoid the obstacle if possible. Do you really need to take the objective to win? Move your 81mm closer to direct fire at the MG. The closer you are, the higher the odds of inflicting losses and disruption. Use smoke to cover/screen the advance, or in preparation to assault the position. Move further units first to soak up any Opportunity Fire the MG still has, then move in to attack/assault.
