On Christmas Eve, 1939, KG Erwin received a most unusual group of visitors at his home. They apologized profusely, and after I invited them in, some of them waved to their drivers, and several cases of liquors were carried into my dining room. The visitors were members of the Brooklyn Trust Association, and they offered me the GM/field manager position for the Dodgers.

After quite a bit of serious discussion, the clock tolled midnight and a 3-year contract was agreed upon. After this, several Christmas toasts were served up, and the board members teetered and carried each other out to their waiting cars. Their drivers trundled them away, leaving me with my now-sleeping family and (hopefully) an uninterrupted Christmas holiday.

A 50-round draft will be held on January 2, 1940. My mission: to win a world championship by 1942.

Here are the Dodgers' first ten draft choices:

1. P Kirby Higbe
2. RF Enos Slaughter
3. P Hal Newhouser
4. CF Dom DiMaggio
5. P Dizzy Trout
6. SS Pee Wee Reese
7. 1B Mickey Rocco
8. 3B Pete Reiser
9. C Ken O'Dea
10. P Jim Bagby

This is a very young Dodger team, and not surprisingly, we rated dead last in the pre-season PSPN power-rankings. I drafted for pitching and defense, with an accent on youth and potential. The average age of our major-league roster is 23. I believe we will surprise some people.
