While yet to be confirmed in beta testing Paul and I believe we've finally licked the out of sync bug. Paul ran some sophisticated and very time consuming diagnostics and discovered a case where we were accessing valid memory but the wrong memory. I put some checking code and confirmed that in some cases objective tasks were pointing to the wrong mission plan ( their boss's mission plan rather than their own ). Further mods to correct this and testing all day yesterday revealed no out of sync occurances. We will put out another build today so our beta testers can give it a more thorough test. But it is looking good.

THANK YOU PAUL!!

Let me be the first one here to say : Good job !
Even if it is not the genuine "out-of-sync"(tm) bug, it was still an annoying one.

Out by the end of May? Perfect timing, should have my new machine by then! Just to let the team at Panther know, your feedback over the entire long development has been first class . As for ridding the damn sync bug (hopefully), I can look forward to getting my butt whipped online soon by Yakstock or Markshot.

It's an insider thingie. Dave once introduced the concept of virtual bottles of Shiraz for exceptional bug hunting features. We weren't too impressed with that, but in a pinch Australian wine can always be used to flush the toilet so it wasn't all bad.

Then I recently mentioned FireFly Shiraz as the newest Aussie con trick : the grapes are supposed to be picked at night (under the light of fireflies) to keep them out of the heat of the sun. I didn't believe a word of it, and attributed it all to fancy marketing, but apparantly it's true because wine connaisseur par excellence Ray said so.

Now, before anyone asks about the term "psycho-banzaï" - I think I coined that one first to describe my playing habits

OK I'm declaring the out of sync bug quashed. I'm now racing to finish off the final edits of the manuals and hope to sign off next week.

Ah, you noticed it too

Some of the beta bunnies have already secretly agreed to make sure Arjuna stays focussed on this and not wander off and add some incredibly fine new features to this game that take a year to program.

In the meantime : enjoy COTA - I know you will.

Hi all,

We just put out build 123 our first "final candidate" build. All known bugs crushed, including the dreaded out of sync bug. If all works out well we will sign off at the end of next week.

Did the time out bug have something todo with windows time as someone mentioned? Just curious?

If so maybe their name should go in the manual as a credit in helping defeat that elusive bug.

No it didn't. The out of sync bug was finally tracked down by Paul using a MS development tool though that enabled us to pinpoint an occurance where the wrong memory address was being used. But in fact the bug was due to an earlier "shortcut" we had used in HTTR that we subsequently forgot about.

The "shortcut" was to use the pointer field inside an objective task that normally points to "our mission plan" to instead point to our boss's mission plan. Having forgot about this I subsequently was using it on the assumption that it was out mission plan and this caused the error. So the lessson for good programming - avoid shortcuts.

Great news ! At some point, I think many of us thought this quest for the out of synch bug was even more mythical than the Holy Grail itself

But you finally nailed it ! Congrats !

Now, time to ship and get your money's worth ! I am ready to download

Hi all,

Just to keep you posted. We have discovered that all the saved games we were including to use with the tutorials are now invalid because of the fix for the out of sync bug. ( Two steps forward, one back! ) So it's back to the drawing board for these. It will take us a week to redo all of these. So we won't be able to sign off till Fri 26 May now.

Hi all,

It's just after 6pm here on Friday. We have come very close to signing off, but not quite. I'm halfway through finalising the last manual - for the ScenMaker. I need another day on that one. I am still waiting on some feedback from testers to the revised Advanced Tutorial manual and saved games before declaring that one done too. They only got it last night so I need to give them another day or two. Then I have to bundle everything up for Matrix. So should sign off by next Tuesday or Wednesday.

I must admit that I had a lot of fun revising the Advanced Tutorial. The joy I felt when the enemy AI not only pulled its head out of the noose I was planning to pull around its forces in the Sperkhios Bend, but it counter attacked my bridgehead from which the envelopment forces were staging. Great stuff.

It must feel really good to have created something like CotA. It sounds like an absolute gem!

After it goes gold roughly how long are we looking at before it appears for download?

Matrix normally require two to three weeks, but David Heath assured me they will do their level best to get it out asap.

Hi all,

A combination of auto-testing and beta feedback meant we had to fix a few things. These have been done and a new final candidate build is uploading as I type. All the documentation is done. So as soon as the Panther Prowlers give the thumbs up and Marc finishes off the revised Intro movie, we're done. Should be in two to three days ( you reading this Marc ).
