MuguNiner -> Night Flying (1/27/2013 10:57:36 PM)

Greetings,

Is night flying a trainable thing, or can you change a group to fly at night and expect the same performace as day flying?
I don't see a stat for it in the Pilots stats, or training options. How does a group qualify for night flying?

Thanks

Unfortunately it is just the trigger on the unit screen - just click it and your daylight fighter pilots are immediately able to fly at night :)
However night performance of planes is reduced - smaller chance to fly, to hit target, intercept enemy planes, shot down/being shot down by another plane.
Also for attacking TF at night you need to detect it during that phase (by sub or naval search flying at night).

imo as far as this game is concerned, there's no need (or ability) to 'qualify' for Night air ops. also, Training in Night mode is v. slow.

's a bit weird, in that non-NF fighters are hopeless for Night Cap, but NF sqns are unable to train 'Escort' during daylight.

i populate my NF sqns w/ fully-trained high-exp pilots out of the Reserve or TRACOM pools.

based on my experience w/ the Downfall scenario, when my current AI-game gets B-29s, they'll be doing quite a lot of Night strat-bombing & airfield attacks. their pilots will be the best i can find, their HQ & sqn leaders will be top-notch, & i'll be spending no few PPs to align their bases, AirHQs & sqns to a well-coordinated command structure.

Night fighters can train on "sweep" during the day which will increase the air skill.

As far as non-night fighters being hopeless. Quite frankly, I have yet to see any difference between radar equipped night fighters and regular fighters on CAP. I would not waste any time or thought on night fighters. Any fighter unit put up on night CAP will not shoot down much but they do affect bombing accuracy. Night fighters don't seem to be any better at this that regular fighters.

i have been using my Blenhiem IFs as night fighter and have had kills and "unescorted bombers withdraw" .

if i see a lot of night bombing i will use small groups or headquarters groups as night fighters. they seem to have more effect when at a base with RADAR.

i agree w/ rms/pa - the baseforce as well as the NFs need the radar. i don't get hardly any kills, but view the "unescorted bombers withdraw" msg as a win.

lately i've been experimenting w/ dividing the NF sqn into its 3 sections, assigning them different altitudes as 'Night stacked-CAP', w/ the hope that a successful Night intercept might be related to being on the same alt as the incoming bombers. no results to report yet, but under the recent betas, the airbase treats the 3 sub-groups as 1 against the 'airgroups allowed' capacity, so the base capacity isn't diminished.

I've had some success with night fighters at Akyab. Put a RAF squadron of hurr trop c's up and a US army unit(cant remember which) and the US night fighters had about 10 kills after 2 weeks. The RAF had 1.[&:]

most likely 10th AF.

in china i have had successes with Il15s against Sallys. at night.
