Thanks Cribtop, time to transfer ships among TFs then.
What about insert BBs in the ACTF, do they can effectively soak up enemy bombers attention or better trasfer them in dedicated SCTF?

Also which ACTF perform better? (Especially for AA defence)

When I got to this point, I went with putting just one Kongo into the ACTF so that I could make two medium-size SCTFs centered around Mutsu and the other Kongo, respectively. Also, I made sure to put the DDs with Type 95 and Type 2 depth charges. Note however that I'm playing stock rather than DBB, unsure if that makes a difference on the ASW end.

In my experience, air raids like to target capital ships and BBs seem to get attacked almost as often as CVs, so they're useful "bullet sponges".

Thanks for the info [:)]

Naval Warfare
I lost any contact with his CVs, a quiet turn.

Losses so far:

Cribtop -> RE: 08-25-42 (2/22/2013 11:05:20 PM)

FYI, yes BBs make good bomb magnets and AA platforms, but you only want the 30 knot ships with the CVs lest they slow the carriers down. If you have two slow BBs and two Kongos in SCTFs, I would keep the same class ships together to avoid slowing down the Kongos. If you only have two Kongos, use them for CV escorts, then make a "slow" BB SCTF a few CATFs and several CL/DD TFs.

Do you mean several small TFs with 4-5 ships?

Air Warfare
I put some Zero in LRCAP to cover a transport TF and they made a good job, 3 P-39D Airacobra shot down for one Zero.

Naval Warfare
Now I made a very stupid mistake...I thought that when you set a bombardment mission it automatically choice the best distance before attack, therefore if the target is 10 hex away it moves a couple of hexes and then wait the next turn to attack in the night...
My TF moved 9 hexes and now I am adjacent to PM, totally spotted [:(]

The Tanaka's TF circumnavigated New Guinea to attack PM behind his recon area, all is going good until last turn.
Surely I will do the mission anyway but he can move out the aircrafts...[8|]

Cribtop -> RE: 08-26-42 (2/23/2013 3:52:49 PM)

Bombardments are tricky. Lessons learned!

As for TF size, I'd say four ships is a bit small. I personally prefer a size of 6-8 ships total, sometimes as high as 10 ships. More than that and you will find that some of the ships never get into the fight.

+1

(and collissions are more common)

Blind Sniper -> RE: 08-26-42 (2/23/2013 4:25:40 PM)

Thanks for your help guys, now I have a better knowledge about TF composition. [:)]

Blind Sniper -> 08-27-42 (2/23/2013 4:42:03 PM)

Naval Warfare
Luckily my opponent thought it was a recon mistake [&o], this action has been successful after all:

Allied aircraft losses
Catalina I: 15 damaged
P-39D Airacobra: 42 damaged
P-39D Airacobra: 2 destroyed on ground
Beaufort V: 12 damaged
Kittyhawk IA: 37 damaged
Kittyhawk IA: 1 destroyed on ground

Japanese Ships
CA Kako
CA Furutaka
CA Kinugasa
CA Aoba
CA Chokai
CL Tatsuta
CL Tenryu

Allied ground losses:
486 casualties reported
Squads: 0 destroyed, 0 disabled
Non Combat: 16 destroyed, 53 disabled
Engineers: 2 destroyed, 11 disabled
Guns lost 11 (1 destroyed, 10 disabled)
Vehicles lost 10 (3 destroyed, 7 disabled)

Airbase hits 29
Airbase supply hits 7
Runway hits 91
Port supply hits 1

Sweep and Airfield attack will follow, then I have started to move the Horii units to PM.

I just had this same problem. I learned that I should have set the speed to Full instead of Mission because I used a waypoint. I was 5 hexes due east of Milne Bay and wanted to see if maybe the enemy SCTF (which was just hit by Bettys the day before and -1 CA [:D]) was on patrol in the hex SW of Milne, so I set a waypoint there first. Apparently the game engine will use cruise speed (which was 4 hexes) to the waypoints and only then look at the destination. I thought that since the bombardment destination was 7 hexes away (including the waypoint), that the TF would move at full speed.

To make matters worse, Shikinami rammed the Tone and caused 13 major Flt/6 major Eng. If I hadn't spent PPs on that commander, I'd have his head. I still might! If he hadn't decreased the speed of my TF by 1 hex for both Full and Cruising speeds, I could've bombarded Moresby and Milne (with another TF) undetected that turn. I wasn't willing to do Moresby without Tone, so Milne x2 it was.

May your Moresby bombardment be as successful as my Milne Bay ones ;).

Blind Sniper -> RE: 08-26-42 (2/23/2013 8:54:49 PM)

Eh eh, another lesson learned, never use full speed but emergency!

Blind Sniper -> 08-28-42 (2/23/2013 8:59:30 PM)

Air Warfare
Few aircrafts take off from PM and my Zeros outnumber his CAP, 8 enemy fighters shot down for no losses back.

Naval Warfare
Frank said me that it was almost impossible to see an enemy bombardment TF close to PM therefore he thought was a mistake, never overstimate your opponent [:D]
I have been lucky, stop.

Btw, I found his CVs again.

Blind Sniper -> 08-29-42 (2/24/2013 8:48:36 AM)

General
Finally I got the last 2nd Division reinforcements, now I can start to plan an offensive operation.

Air Warfare
Airfield attack on PM, demaged several aircrafts on ground.

Blind Sniper -> 08-30-42 (2/24/2013 11:37:03 AM)

Naval Warfare
In the previous report I noticed this phrase:
Allied Torpedo Bomber sighted over Rabaul
Impossible but enemy CVs unspotted around Rabaul, it would be a very risky operation, and it was [X(]

Surely my opponent is trying to cacth my bombardment TF but instead he found several small ships moving supply and fuel around the map.
His CVs sunk 5 xAKLs, 7 SC and 1 TK, nothing valuable at least (each one was worth only 1 or 2 points).
In the afternoon my Bettys lauched an attack but they missed the CVs, a BB has been hit twice instead.

Allied Ships
BB North Carolina, Torpedo hits 2, on fire
CV Enterprise
CA Australia
CV Saratoga

That's a pity but I managed to shot down 9 F4F-4 Wildcats, 18 SBD-3 Dauntless and 3 TBF-1 Avenger for 12 Zeros and 2 Bettys.
I would claim a small tactical victory given that BB North Carolina surely is still afloating but every CV aircraft shot down is good for the future CV encounter. My losses are easily replaceable.

Highlights
4thKuk-2 pilots are the brave guys the hit BB North Carolina despite the heavy enemy AA!

Lokasenna -> RE: 08-30-42 (2/24/2013 4:06:35 PM)

Did he happen to suffer an uncoordinated strike from his CVs? If he's combined Enterprise and Saratoga into one TF, then he's going to suffer uncoordinated strikes more often for being over the 100 + random(100) limit for the Allies in 1942...

Blind Sniper -> RE: 08-30-42 (2/25/2013 8:46:04 AM)

Yes, I was able to catch an ecorted TBs raid and shot down few of them but I think he put his CVs in different TF but in the same hex.

My impression was that if both CVs show up in the combat report for a strike against them (when you hit North Carolina above), then they were in the same TF. I guess I could be wrong...

Blind Sniper -> RE: 08-30-42 (2/25/2013 7:52:22 PM)

I think you are right, maybe my recon was wrong about the splitted TFs.

Blind Sniper -> 08-31-42 (2/25/2013 7:53:37 PM)

Quiet turn, his CVs are in the middle of the Solomon Sea.

Ground Warfare
We take Nauru Island and the first perimeter is done, good place to control Guadacanal traffic.
