Does this story not strike any of you as odd? Surely even the most junior of call centre staff would see that a phone bill for a sum that is difficult to even say, let alone comprehend - how much is that anyway - cannot be correct. Even if not, what happened? the case was referred to a manager who thought "yes, of course its possible to rack up such a bill". If this story is true, this is not so much corporate greed or arrogance - this is more to do with the blind stupidity of people. Imagine the company trying to claim that amount on Direct Debit - I mean it is a physical impossibility.. Plus of course, the story is in the Guardian. Ergo and theretofore its probably $%^%&^&*^.

That's why it made it to The Guardian [:D] But still, I more or less understand... Point One: many times these call centre workers do NOT listen to what you are saying. I am sure everyone of us can say so. Point two: these workers might be very far away, let's say in Africa (in the French case; India, the British case). Perhaps they have problems with inflation (and of course they deduce there is inflation everywhere)! I remember I was literally a millionaire in Vietnam! I had millions in my pockets and proudly spent them... buying bread, coffee, tobacco and beer... [:o] And finally we cannot rule this out: that concrete worker was possibly just a little bit er... thick [:D]

I picked this story up in a local news paper that is usually good at checking the stories. But they do make mistakes and they originnaly got the story from the guardian so therefore I linked to that newspaper. If it is true then it is indeed about the stupidity and laziness of people. But I think they answered as they were instructed to answer and they didn't even bother to check the numbers. I suspect the call went something like this; Caller: Hello. My phone bill is not correct, it is way to much to pay. Call centre: No. The bill is correct. The automated reading do not make mistakes. Caller: But the sum on the bill is more money than I can even say. Call centre: Still. The bill is correct and must be paid. Caller: But it is a seventeen figures number. That can't be possible be right. My bill should be around one to two hundred euro. Call centre: If you can't pay your bill at once we can help you with a payment plan. Caller: Could you please check your reading of the phone bill. It must be a fault somewhere. Call centre. Our automated service do not make mistakes. Caller: Could I please talk with a supervisor? Call centre: Of course. Please hold. 10 minutes pass and call is then disconnected.

This is why I pay most of my bills by good olde fashioned "cheques", rather than automated account debit. With this example, they (the phone company) needs to convince me why I should cut a check for a million billion euros-which isn't going to happen. In the case of the automated account debit, they just take it out of your account by 'agreement'. Then it's up to you to ask for / explain / beg for reimbursement or reversal of charges. I find it best to assume that these larger companies are faceless, bloodless, profit-driven corporations bent on their own goals. Customers can (usually) go and hang. These low expectations make dealing with them much easier, as I assume they'll try to screw me however they can. I'm sometimes pleasantly surprised to the contrary.

At least they finally said they were wrong. That is better than most politicians. A rather famous politician recently said corporations were "people" too. So I suspect they have just as much soul and heart and brains as your average Joe. Which is..... BTW PoultryMan I once lived in Minnesota finding it to be a rather tolerable place for a Kannokistani. Do you ride a dinosaur to the counting house to pay with "cheques"? I had to write one the other day and the only ones I could find in the house were predated to the last century.

As you can see, Warspite is far too generous an employer, and as such should really be barred from the Victorian Employers Club. If you examine this photo you can surmise that they can afford to eat and wear clothes at the same time. That would never be allowed in one of my hellholes.... ahem... I mean factory.
