As you will see over the next few turns, my ability to push forward is not impeded by little things, like Russian tank corps [:'(]

Tank corp make lousy defence units, I have learned a valuable lesson with them. Attack punch only with them and you dont need more then 3 in any given army imo. Mech units on the other hand ewwwww all around goodness

Turns 50 to 60

In general, I managed to clean out the Don bridgehead (no more Russians on my side of the Don). I have reached Stalingrad, but I am just bringing up infantry to assault the city. My strongest Panzer Corp is pushing along the Volga, heading for Astrakahn. The Rumanians in the Caucaus are slowly encircling a Russian hedgehog position at Elista. Krasnador has fallen, and Berlin wants me to take Poti, Grozny, and Stalingrad. (I failed once already to take Stalingrad).

Turn 60: September 7, 1942. Weather: Clear

The Russians have been stubbornly holding onto Elista with three tank corps (an impossible obstacle for the Romanians to dislodge). But since I have 3/4 of the entire Romanian army in the area, I am outflanking him on both sides. Soon he will either have to run, or suddenly face low supply when I cut the road off behind him.

During the mud turn (last turn), A lot of those Romanians had pretty low supply, so I have reached an end to my supply line...The Job of the Italian army (with the help of a panzer corp) will be to free up the rail line that comes east from Krasnador which will help the Romanians supply considerably.

The Romanian spirit level is at 100, and they seem to get 400 replacements each turn (either infantry/staff/engineers).

The 14th Panzer Korp of the 1st Panzer Army consists of the 22nd Panzer Division, the 1st SS Motorized Division, the 4th SS Motorized Division, the 13th Panzer Division and the 3rd Panzer Division. A very powerful force. Most of the Korp is at full strength (except for the piddly SS Panzer's goal is to push along the road beside the Volga to cut off the rail line from Astrakahn into the Caucaus.

The rest of the Romanian army will be used to screen the Volga, one unit per hex. Surely nothing bad will happen to them come winter? Nahhhh....

Stalingrad...the city of stalins. Every citizen a member of the Stalin fan club. Having missed taking it once, the prestige cost has gone up to 10. (from 8) Not sure if I will take it in time this round either.

My motorized divisions where supposed to outflank the city to the north, but seem to have run into a fair bit of Russian-ness. I almost think that he doesn't want me to go that way. He even counterattacked me on his turn in an attempt to push me back over the Don, losing 4400 infantry in one assault. OUCH. I took advantage of his attack to take his fortification hex away from him (due to his low readiness/entrenchment level, and Manstein's awesome awesomeness)

I then play an entrenchement card on the two motorized infantry units that take the hex, in hopes his counterattack fails....fingers and knights crossed.

The rest of the 11th army (the infantry korps) are converging for the assault on Stalingrad. Probably some time in before the end of September.

What used to be the Russian Don Bridgehead has become the German Don Bridgehead. With a couple of road bridges secured, I can afford to push in a bit against his weakened units. I have no real goal in mind, other then gaining some space to retreat along come winter.

Before the fall of Krasnador, I was saving my political points to get enough to play either No Grozny or No Poti. Unfortunately, I didn't quite have enough when the Russians evacuated the city in front of my troops. With the Poti mission lasting until early/mid November, and Grozny lasting until mid October, I have a lot of time before I have to worry about avoiding them....if I want to.

So with almost 200 pp's I put the 11th army on priority, along with the infantry korps, to get them ready for the assault on Stalingrad, and have purchased (so far) 3 infantry cards in a row...with a fourth one to go next turn. The current cost this turn was um.....75 (77?) and will probably be 90ish next turn. I got 9000 infantry, 5000 infantry, 7000 infantry on those three turns, and the surge is going to hit the front lines next turn (using advanced Supply rules also affects replacements...they flow from OKH to Army..then Army to Corp...then Corp to unit over three turns.)

Oh..the Romanians you see in the upper right corner where the last reinforcements I will see until late November. Lucky for me, the Russians had just cut a hole in my line, so I plopped them both on next to his spearhead and slapped him back over the Don (after losing my Romanian panzers due to breaking, curse small units!)

I will send them back eventually to the south where they can become prisoners of war if the Russians cut off the caucuas during winter.

Turn 63: September 13, 1942. Weather: Clear.

In order to keep up with the aar's I am going to skip turns every once in a while. The last turn was rain (and nothing happened on either side) and the front is fairly static, except in the Caucaus.

The 14th Panzer Korp, heading for Astrakahn chewed up and destroyed a fairly large chunk of the Russians blocking it along the Volga road. I am still mightily impressed at how strong the panzer divisions are over open terrain, attacking at least twice, and sometimes three times in a turn.

A single unit is not a defense, in that the amount of AP's spent in killing/retreating it is probably close to the cost of entering the hex.

The Romanian army is too slow to surround the Russians at Elista, but are forced to spread out more to close the holes. As a result, Elista fell during the rain turn, when it was attacked by four sides on a single Russian defender.

Another thing I noticed is a lot more Russian fighters intercepting. Either he has moved his airforce closer to the front, or I am getting closer to where he has hidden his planes.

The forest and rough/forest hexes towards the coast are getting to be too tough for the Hungarians to fight through. It will probably have to become a quiet front.

The German 5th army managed to capture a bridge intact over the river and will soon cut south to follow the rail line to Grozny.

The fighting for Stalingrad has begun! The first fortification on the outskirts of the city is blown completely away by 80 stacking points of artillery, modified by Freedom for the Corp, and Initiative for a division. The three sided attack afterwards then easily pushes the defenders into the city.

Emboldened by my success, (and feeling somewhat bad that I overkilled the hex), I attack the next fort up the line, this time with no artillery. It falls, but with a lot more casualties. A fresh, unused infantry divisions moves into the fort, and promptly digs in (Entrench).

North West of Stalingrad, another fortification falls to artillery barrage and three german infantry divisions (who suffer about 1200 infantry losses). These fortifications will come in handy during the winter.

It is going to be a long slug-fest to take Stalingrad. I am pretty sure I will take it by the end of October, but it will be quite bloody. Even if I take my time and attack every three turns to max out my artillery.

Total infantry so far is about 800,000 for the Axis to 610,000 for the Russians. However, around 200,000 of mine are minor axis, and another 50,000 are emergency troops.

That would mean there are more Russian then German infantry on the map.

And he is getting, on average a Rifle division per turn, with a lot of little brigades. And extra Mech corps/tank corps to boot. And I am getting nothing until the end of November. And the cost to play my infantry card is now over 100 points. (115 I think)

And he has yet to play his replacement cards in quantity.

Here is a glimpse of the whole front. Only small gains this time, with another fortification cleared in front of Stalingrad. I like how the Romanians seem to be controlling about 1/3rd of the total front.

Turn 65: September 17, 1942. Weather: Clear.

I had a larger number of 'hold' results this turn then I am used to, I suspect that my forces are starting to get too beat up. My infantry clear the last fortification in front of Stalingrad, leaving the entire city exposed to my forces. After a few turns, I will launch my attack on the city itself. (SO that my artillery replenishes).

The drive to Astrakahn hit a snag, as my two SS mot divisions were unable to take the town of Yenotayovsk. The rest of the panzer korp moved forward over the open terrain, so the town will fall next turn. Astrakahn only 13 hexes away along the road!.

Turn 67: September 21, 1942. Weather: Clear, with a hint of cold.

I have given a lot of thought as to how I want to win the game. My opponent seems to be throwing all his new divisions into the Caucaus' as they arrive, which probably means that I won't get to Baku before winter. And when winter hits, I am pretty sure I am not going to like it, as the Russians will be able to hit where ever they want along the line.

At the moment, I am sitting at 435 Victory points. To reach 500 (and keep it at the end of he game) is probably impossible. But I should be able to keep 350 for a minor. The Russians are getting beat up, and he doesn't appear to be keeping any strategic reserves available for a winter a winter offensive will probably be a general offensive, hitting my lines wherever I am weak.

And with a frozen Volga, I will be very very weak in the Caucaus.

Whew...I need to cheer myself is a graph of total losses inflicted by me on the Russians...

My drive towards Astrakahn has hit a new wall of Russians...which are in better supply then the 14th Panzer Korp. Part of the problem is the 1st Panzer Army is split into two, with the Army HQ and IIIrd Panzer Korp sitting near Stalingrad. Since we are using Hardcore supply rules, my supply has to flow first to 1st Panzer Army before moving down the (long) road to my Korp HQ.

To solve the problem, I transfer the IIIrd Panzer Korp to 11th Army (Manstein) so he can use it to push north of Stalingrad. I then move the 1st Panzer HQ to the Rail Junction with the next east-west road from the Volga for a shorter supply path.

Now I am in green supply on or adjacent to the road, and yellow supply for three more hexes away from the road (fine for attacking).

My 5th German Army, tasked with taking Grozny is slowly pushing South-East. One good thing I am noticing is that with the mountains and bad terrain along the coast, it is easy for me to screen it with weaker units, and concentrate more army on the drive for Grozny.

If/when my tanks cut the rail line from Astrakahn, the drive to Grozny will get much easier.

I must point out we are NOT using the newer version of the game with increased soviet replacements> I have ONLY played the infantry card three times, and I have yet to play my tank card so my costs to do a build up with cards is in excellent shape. I am also sitting at 53 prestige with a realistic chance of getting another 20 in coming turns.

How is your airforce and how are you using it? Who controls the skies?

Turn 69: September 25, 1942. Weather: Still Clear.

My opponent has 560 fighters to my 275.

He has 210 sturmovicks to my 180 Stuka's

He has 175 bombers to my 805 bombers.

With a two to one advantage over my fighters, he doesn't have enough to wrest control of the skies away from me. However, I have 90 Fw-190's, 75 Bf109e's, 45 Bf108f's and 10 Bf109g's. That leaves about 50 for my twin engines and minors. So I don't have a lot of strength points that I can cover the entire front (including the Caucaus).

Despite having pretty much total control of the air for the last couple months, I have steadily lost stuka's to AA fire. Seems that if I get too many stuka's into a unit, it will lose a strength point, even if I am just bombing a partisan unit. Not so with my level bombers, so they have been continually climbing in strength since the beginning.

During his turn, the Russians launched some counterattacks. Specifically, he hit the spread out Romanian force in the Caucaus, badly mauling two regiments of fine Romanian youth. And drove his tank corp behind my lines. I thought about pulling back, but instead hit his single regiments holding the line, and isolated his tank corp. If he still has enough supply to keep action rating, he should have little difficulty breaking out, however, I did send a panzer division down to help the Romanians next turn.

Around the Stalingrad front, I am still waiting for Manstein to come up with a plan of attack to taking the first urban hex of the city.

North of the city, another fortification falls as I attempt to get three hex sides on the northern urban hex of Stalingrad. At the rate I am going, I won't be taking the center of Stalingrad until the end of October.

My Bridgehead over the Don is picking up steam, as I suspect the Russians are not reinforcing or sending any new replacements to that front.

Turn 72: October 1, 1942. Weather: Frosty in the north, toasty in the south, with scattered snow.

The last few turns have all been clear. In fact, I believe we only had two rain turns in all of September. The Russians have been friskier then normal, attacking and counter-attacking more aggressively. What usually happens is I will take a hex and end up surrounded on three sides by Russians. (Losing around 300-500 men) The Russians will counterattack, and push them back. (losing readiness, and anywhere from 1000-4000 men). I will attack one wing of his attack, and take it (losing about 100 guys). Until the Russians can no longer attack.

I finally captured the fortification line the Russians built north of Stalingrad, which I will use as my own shield, along with the fortifications he built in front of Stalingrad. As for attacking the city itself, I used Manstein and a gamble, along with an attack card on a division to get a 73% attack bonus to take the south most light urban hex. After four more turns, I will gamble again, and use my artillery to try and take the first urban hex.

I was slowly, but surely pushing north from the Don until this frozen hell appeared. No more of that. I will probably have to pull back 'slowly' to straighten my line.

A word about the weather. I notice that the rivers all seem to be downgraded one level.. The Volga is now like a Major River for movement/supply costs. A major is like a medium...and so on. I am going to have to investigate this further, as I thought the rivers would 'disappear' in winter. Like the swamps.

I am still pushing towards astrakhan, but the Russian determination to stop me at all costs is making it very difficult to make headway. With the fall of the Fortifications by Stalingrad, I am moving III panzer down to assist the Rumanians in pushing across to the railine, but that won't be for a week.

Over all, my army is starting to look a bit tattered. Under OOB, German Infantry, the average infantry division is missing 20 strength points of infantry. I am missing on average 60 tanks out of every panzer division. And I am still getting only 300 infantry a turn replacements..and my infantry card is worth over a hundred.

I played the Avoid Stalingrad card, as Oct. 1st was the deadline for my second attempt, and I wish no further attempts. I will next play avoid Grozny and then Avoid Poti, so that I can go on a more defensive posture. it is, the map. I like how there is snow in the hills, but not the plains around Millerowo.

I dont know if this is deliberate or pure coincidence, but look at your lines, with you coming to the limit of your offensive and you are in a very similar position to how far the Germans actually got. The main difference that I can see is that you have got a lot further towards Astrakhan...oh and you have about 300k more troops on the field of battle.

As for the rivers, in the Uranus scenario I noticed that they gradually froze up and no longer became an obstacle depending on the size of the river and how many snow turns there have been in that region. We are coming towards the end of December and all rivers are now completely frozen. Both of us also have to squint at the screen to make out where the rivers are now[:D]

It is deliberate but not entirely by my choice. I wanted to isolate Astrakahn from the Caucaus. But the Russians just keep putting on their reinforcements in my way. After I chew through one army, another takes it place. And my panzers are getting weaker and weaker. When I started along the Volga, they were pretty much full strength. Now the Wiking is at half, and most of them are at 3/4 strength.

My airforce is also getting weaker and weaker. I disbanded a couple Fighter squadrons, to keep the strength up in the rest, and I may have to disband another two. My stuka's are pretty much shot as a force, although I still have a very potent bomber force. The minors are getting ground down too, although I suspect that they will be beat pretty quickly if they defend anyways, so I might as well get some licks in with them before winter.

My axis minors spirit levels are all around 95%, so I won't be in danger of losing them until he seriously maul's them. My plan is to disband any unit that reaches 50% integrity, so that they can feed the other divisions. (axis or german)

I love the way the weather bands across the map. And the way the hills get colder. However, we seem to have reached a snag in our game.

On a whim, at the end of my October 3rd turn, I clicked on the bridge hex at Saratov, curious to see how many planes I could bring on it.

I was surprised to see 9 squadrons of KG. Equalling 195 stacking points of air. SO I said 'what the 'ell' and hit the attack button.
And destroyed the bridge over the Volga from Stavka. The only bridge supplying most of the Russian army. Without realizing the ramifications I sent my turn to my opponent.

He can place no reinforcements in the Caucaus. (or east of the Volga). Most of his units are red. Not being one to complain (at first) I get the turn back and launch a few attacks with my German infantry beside my panzer korp on the Volga. And eliminate a fair number of units, pushing him back a hex. My armour stays put to rest and get some reinforcements (and I am still oblivious to the supply problem, but am wondering about it).

He gets his turn, and realizes that he cannot even move any of the units down there, and still unable to repair the bridge at Saratov, so he feels strongly towards discontinuing the game.

The bridges seem easier to destroy in the cold weather as well. I wonder if it has something to do with the rivers being 'downgraded' due to the frozen weather.

Would be a shame not to see this continue. If you look at the hits this AAR gets there are many observers who'd miss their frequent dose of interesting lecture. [:)]

To be honest: This is THE most important bridge of the game which I'd guard best as soviet player, with fighter reserves and a double portion of engineers, to have backup engineering points for the odd case of a bridgebusting offensive.

Surely his units south of Astrakhan can't be in the red already one turn after the bridge went down? Implications of your modded supply mechanism?

Couldn't you agree on a few turns of truce until he gets this bridge repaired, freezing all units apart from a few engineers he needs to repair the bridge?

Liquidsky over came what you would think would be the weather, and I had 5 fighter in the area to intercept. Even with an engineer there and repairing on my turn he can bomb every turn and keep the caucasus red. As a test I flew one fighter and a ravaged level bomber and bombed one of his bridges destroying it(during clear weather it took the whole soviet air farce to maybe accomplish this). There seems to be a bug with bridges freezing and getting weakened lol. Liquidsky last night as a test after we talked about it sent his fighter and junker 52 transports on bridge bombing missions as solo unit and succeded in bombing most of the bridges once they freeze. At this point the game is unplayable there is no way for me to counter or survive this bug. Trace supply to all the caucasus is Yellow near the wolga to red Turkish border, but worse all my units except a few hexes are red with lack of supply. As a side note it got me thinking about the Tiblisi card and it is a MUST play for the soviets once Rostov has fallen. It acts like stavka and generates about 1700 supply a turn. this supply allows 1 front with 1 full strength army to operate without having to trace to Stavka(and if your not isolated it its added to the stavka pool). I must admit this game is excellent and I was having a ton of desperate fun. This bug is unfortunate but I don't see any other option but throwing in the towel. I cannot overcome red supply no action points and no ammunition on three fronts. For those following the AAR I apolgise on quiting as that is not in my nature to do so. I would like to thank liquidsky for an excellent game, well played. Nothing worse then spending two months playing a game for it to implode due to a game problem. [:(]
