Well, it's over! The Imperialist Japanese aggressors have admitted they bit off more than they can chew.
After being severely disappointed in their ability to sink our invulnerable battle fleet at Pearl Harbor on December 7th, they tried a second attack, as described above. Our cruisers and destroyers engaged the enemy carriers in a surface fight where we did not manage to sink any of them, but damaged Hiryu enough that she was detached for home. The other 5 Japanese CV's stuck around Pearl for a 3rd attempt at our BB's. They did land some more bombs on them, and despite causing 95-98 flotation damage on a couple, they again did not sink a single BB. I decided I was still playing with "house money", and ordered my SCTF at Pearl to attempt another engagement. The KB slipped a bit south, but my SCTF found and reacted to them. In a very long daylight battle, I landed a few 6 and 8 inch shells on one of the CV's, and gave as good as I got against his escorting BB's and CA's, but I didn't knock any of the CV's out of action. I knew that was trouble for my boys. They got pretty well beat up by many, many daytime air attacks, but a few might have made it home to Pearl. They earned their paychecks, however, by damaging one of the CV's enough that it would need a bit of yard time, and forcing Hiryu to be detached earlier.
I took a big risk and sprinted the Enterprise TF at full speed to the east, hoping to catch the Hiryu TF or the replenishment TF that I spotted in the area, and hoping to not catch the rest of the KB. My surprise was effective, as the Big E launched a full Alpha Strike against Hiryu and sunk her. I was then surprised in return as Hiryu's airgroup got off a counterstrike. Not a massive one, but plenty enough when Big E was shaken by an AMMO STORAGE EXPLOSION, followed up by a FUEL STORAGE EXPLOSION. All in all, a fair trade from my perspective, and enough of a morale hit for the Japanese high command that peace talks were immediately opened. [8D]
We've decided we are both tired of the first 6 months of war, so we have agreed to take Nik's May '42 scenario out for a spin. It seems that the ASW db tweaks are included in it already, mostly to dial back the Uber "E's". I've also allowed several hundred additional planes to be added to the Japanese pools, 600 fighters and 700 bombers. More targets. [:D]
We're kicking things off with that scenario pretty quickly, so the action will be shifting to a new AAR soon. I know Torsten is interested in a closed AAR for his side, so he can get advice and float ideas with the other JFB's. I'm undecided if I'll keep an AAR. I'd love to, but time is never on my side. [:)]
BTW:
The attached BBs and CAs did their job as intended.
No CV ever stopped to be able to launch and recieve planes. The highest damage was a mere 14 sys on one of them.
The rest are outright lies of the imperialist aggressors, of course! My CVs were sent out as commerce raiders and did as they were told to. Both Akagi and Kaga managed to put a lot of 8in shells into enemy ships.
They were so effective, that the Imperial High command considered to abandon those stuipid idea of starting planes from a ship and use the own fleet only for surface action.
