It's an excellent trip to make and i would recommend it to any WW2 buffs. We went on the way back from Southern France, and whilst i don't think the Mrs enjoyed it as much as me she's still smiling next to that King Tiger!

This was listed as an /85 variant, however i thought the 85mm had a muzzle brake?

Yes i would definately recommend it. Has anyone been to any other tank museums? i've been to Bovington Tank museum in Dorset, but would be interested if anyone has been to the Soviet or US ones.

Yup. Nice pics. I will have to visit the place sometime.

IIRC the T-34/85 didn't have a muzzle brake. Perhaps you are thinking of the IS-II - which did?

Nice photos.

I never realized that King Tigers were so big. Games like Close Combat don't really give a sense of size of these monsters.

Yep..been to the armored museum (Patton Museum) at Ft. Knox, Ky. a couple of years ago. IIRC, they had a full side cutout of a Tiger II on display.

We've been to Saumur as well - my highlights there were the Israeli Merkava, those French behemoth tanks from the fifties and the Italian WW2 armour - talk about rickety boxes.

As one guy in our group actually speaks Russian we've been dreaming about going to the Stalingrad tank museum but time & costs ...

If you're into WW2 hardware, the Diekirch (Luxemburg) museum is tops and several towns and villages in the Ardennes have "Bulge" stuff on crossroads or town memorials. Most impressive is a Panther in Grand Mesnil and a real, fabulous King Tiger in almost perfect condition on the side of the road in La Gleize.

Whew - great link - looks pretty complete to me when I checked if all the "locals" were in his archive
