demjansk -> DLC France Scenarios French are to strong (12/27/2011 9:20:32 PM)

I was doing fine until the Giraud scenario and lost a lot of units. The one thing I find about the few scenarios after it is the quality of the armor divisions the French have. I don't have anything that can stop it. The PziiiF is a joke and the IV is also a joke. I didn't have any 88's but the French have way to many tanks in these scenarios. Once I lost my core units I was finished, I was playing with a lot of aircover 4-me109's, 2 stukas, 1 me110c and 1 me110d. lot of pioneer and 4 heavy duty artillery pieces. I had about 4 tanks,

Try using Srat bombers on the heavy tanks. If you can run them out of ammo they can't do much damage.

Also if they end up in rough terrain, attack with infantry.
Use arty to soften them up before attacking with ground units.
And then there is the Jagdpanzer, it is really good against those French heavies.

I use the Stuka quite a bit but I don't think a jagpanzers are available in 1940, those heavy tanks are rough

The JgdPz Ib is available in France, I am using it with success against those superheavy French tanks.

okay i need to buy those, by the way, how do you rename units?  I can't find the icon to do this?

Pick one French tank unit at a time with a kampfgruppe tactic: first artillery fire until all remaining strenght points are red, then a stuka hit followed by an experienced pzkw III attack to max the damage (+ other infantry or tank hits if needed). Make sure your artillery ends up adjacent and behind your tanks and infantry so that on their next turn French troops loose a lot while trying to weaken your core elements... next turn mopping will be easier and so on.

I agree with the OP. Not only is the French armored corps and l'Armee de l'air far too strong and well-organized in the late campaign scenarios, but it's really disappointing that the AI isn't held to the same restrictions re unit generation and OOB as the player. It's absurd that AT units can apparently generate in the woods without a controlled city nearby, and that the French have apparently limitless reserves of aircraft, cavalry and armor. (Referring especially to the Aisne scenario, but it seems to have happened elsewhere as well).

I actually like the Giraud scenario, and applaud the designers for trying something new here. However, it would be nice for the Germans to have a few non-core units to expend on the raid, rather than sacrificing cores.

I understand that this was a one-side campaign in real life, but I think a better strategy to make these scenarios playable would be to impose diificult time and distance requirements on the German player. That would be more realistic too. Instead, it's like fighting the battle of Kursk without Tigers and Panthers.

I've played the General Giraud scenario several times.

First time I took Wassigny in Turn 13. Last time I focused all my units to sprint to Wassigny and I managed to take fort at Wassigny in Turn 7 but there was no "general" there to escort back to the capture zone. Has anybody else "found" General Giraud?

I even managed to get recon vehicles behind Wassigny in Turn 6 to cut off any potential retreat by the General towards the soon-to-counter-attack infantry units but I still never saw the General.

I even 'surrendered' early in the scenario to see the whole battlefield but could not find a unit that was General Giraud.

Anybody out there manage to escort the General to the capure zone?

How do I kill French tanks?

Step 1 = Stuka
Step 2 = Artillery (to suppress)
Step 3 = Attack with Panzer 4
Step 4 = 2nd Artillery Strike if needed
Step 5 = 2nd attack with Panzer or Infantry if needed
Step 6 = If needed, 2nd air attack after remaining French tanks retreat

And always try to have sturmpanzer you can roll up behind your leading armor units to blunt the inevitable counter attack from the french armor

The General appears as a captured armoured car once you take the fort hex.

Thanks. Yes, James! I just figured that out when I rebooted the scenario after doing my earlier post. Once I saw my "new unit" then I had to race the general back in a captured French recon vehicle before the French counterattack overwhelmed my forces. Artillery and Luftwaffe was barely able to keep the French at bay. My core units took an awful beating during the 3 turns of fighting retreat it took to get the General back to the capture zone but I did manage to not lose any of them. But it was close. Very close. French airforce and armor counterattack was unrelenting.

depending on your rate of advance, if you have enough turns, it pays to spend 1-2 of them rearming and repositioning prior to triggering the general...[:D]
