Ah and right when you manage to reestablish your space fleet the Erutkah declare war. You are playing one of the most dramatical and surprising games I've seen [:)]

BTW You can set a time limit at the start. At the screen where you set up victory conditions there is an "End game after XX years" option.

Oh, that's good to know!

All right, time to learn about these Erutkah Refugees. For meek little refugees, they've sure done a good job of colonizing choice worlds on the northern Outer Rim. They have the smallish blobs in purple, at the very top of the screen. And also a couple on the west edge of the galaxy.

Yes! He's back! Been looking forward to this. I really, really want you to succeed so that I can pick up some pointers...

Grotius -> RE: Quick and nasty: a Securan story (12/9/2011 11:00:55 PM)

And militarily, they're already at parity with me. Hmmm. Worrisome, but not life-threatening, I wouldn't think. For the short term, I focus on building up my defenses. My longer term plan still involves fried paella, but I need to make sure these Erutkah aren't a threat first.

Grotius -> RE: Quick and nasty: a Securan story (12/9/2011 11:03:46 PM)

I establish my third colony, far to the south, almost near the southern rim. I set it to work making a spaceport, and I send a detachment of cruisers to defend it from light raids. It's too far away to station an entire fleet there.

Well, I'm pretty much a newb! But there's lots of interesting stuff ahead...

... as well as some spoilers. I'll warn the reader when we get to "story" stuff.

Grotius -> RE: Quick and nasty: a Securan story (12/9/2011 11:08:35 PM)

I haven't talked much about my research progress, mostly because I had no progress at all for the first three decades of my existence. But now I've got scientists working round the clock! Even so, I'm way behind. Here's a look at one of my research trees.

Grotius -> RE: Quick and nasty: a Securan story (12/9/2011 11:10:35 PM)

I wouldn't be as technologically advanced as I am were it not for my trading partners. Here we see me shopping from my cousins' VERY long list of available techs. Did I mention that I'm behind in tech? Heh.

Grotius -> RE: Quick and nasty: a Securan story (12/9/2011 11:25:54 PM)

Speaking of research, tech may be key to the UQE's effort to win this game. Their racial victory conditions emphasize tech -- and peace.

I actually might want to try playing the UQE at some point. Their victory conditions appeal to me. But I might want to play a warmonger first. :)

OK, here comes some story stuff. If you don't want spoilers, skip the next SEVEN posts, including this one. :) (Incidentally, is there a "spoiler" button in these forums? A way to make text/images appear only if you click a button?)

A little spoiler space...

And they have some alarming news!

Grotius -> RE: Quick and nasty: a Securan story (12/9/2011 11:35:34 PM)

When asked whether I wish to fight, I of course say yes, since I'm an idiot. Immediately that brings me a second declaration of war. I suppose these chaps are allied with the Shakturi, who are already at war with me.

Also, I didn't notice, but the Gizurean shrimp seem to have declared war on me at this time, too. Ack!

Grotius -> RE: Quick and nasty: a Securan story (12/9/2011 11:36:57 PM)

I've been put in charge of a fleet depending the moon Utopia from the invading Shakturi. All righty! Bring it on!

Grotius -> RE: Quick and nasty: a Securan story (12/9/2011 11:38:34 PM)

And now the Shakturi have their say. Things happening very fast now.

Grotius -> RE: Quick and nasty: a Securan story (12/9/2011 11:44:35 PM)

It's the RETURN OF THE SHAKTURI! Mwuhahaha! [X(]

Well, I still don't regret going to war against them. They don't look all that tough. I mean, last I checked, their military was at parity with mine, right. Right?

Grotius -> RE: Quick and nasty: a Securan story (12/9/2011 11:49:23 PM)

I confidently go to the diplomatic screen to check out their military, which I'm sure is still slightly inferior to mine.

Wait. That must be a typo. Are there SIX digits in their military power?

Gelatinous Cube -> RE: Quick and nasty: a Securan story (12/9/2011 11:51:15 PM)

That is just the beginning of the "Hints to the Past" story-chain. Just fly around to the pulsating blue circles to discover more!

Grotius -> RE: Quick and nasty: a Securan story (12/9/2011 11:54:12 PM)

Because, you know, there are like only ... FIVE digits in my military power. So the Shakturi have 10x as much firepower as I do.

I have sent a few exploration ships to those circles, but I've been distracted and haven't visited them all. I take it any ship will do? Or do I need to send something tougher than an exploration ship?

Grotius -> RE: Quick and nasty: a Securan story (12/10/2011 12:00:14 AM)

Obi-Wan Kenobi: That's no moon.... It's a space station!
Han Solo: It's too big to be a space station!...
Luke Skywalker: I have a very bad feeling about this.
Obi-Wan: Turn the ship around.

I think it has to be exploration ships. You just fly real close to whatever is radiating the blue circle (usually an abandoned ship or starbase) and it will automatically give you the pop-up. You can find a lot of really neat things this way, from tech, to galactic history, to new government types.

Grotius -> RE: Quick and nasty: a Securan story (12/10/2011 12:09:59 AM)

Thanks, Gelatinous Cube. I will be more diligent about those circles in the future!

Well. It was not a typo. The Shakturi outgun me by 10:1! And they won't listen to my suggestions for a cease-fire.

Gelatinous Cube -> RE: Quick and nasty: a Securan story (12/10/2011 12:13:56 AM)

You need NPC Companions to force into the meat grinder for you! I recommend frog boy..

Grotius -> RE: Quick and nasty: a Securan story (12/10/2011 12:14:12 AM)

Plus, I'm also at war with two other Empires, including my old nemesis, the Gizurean Consciousness. The Shakturi have been raiding my gas mines and whatnot, but no attack on my colonies yet. I have three fleets available, all stationed at Almas-3, my homeworld. I ponder sending one south to reclaim my rightful territory from the shrimp (the light purple).

Grotius -> RE: Quick and nasty: a Securan story (12/10/2011 12:15:21 AM)

What the heck. Lay in a course for the Southern Shrimp Outpost, helmsman.

Note that there is now a Shakturi world not far to the east of me. They must have just conquered it. It's called Helu, which curiously is also the name of the new Washington Redskins starting running back. Coincidence? I think not.

[image]local://upfiles/7808/A84550CA198348A38A39103B37810206.jpg[/image]

Grotius -> RE: Quick and nasty: a Securan story (12/10/2011 12:19:19 AM)

But as soon as I start heading south, I spot incoming Shakturi vessels, heading for Almas-3. Turn the ship around, helmsman.

We fight a quick skirmish around Almas-3, and the Shakturi withdraw, but I fear they will be back soon, and in greater numbers.

Grotius -> RE: Quick and nasty: a Securan story (12/10/2011 12:21:58 AM)

At this point, the Gizureans asked for a cease-fire, and while I'd dearly like to spank them, I think I have my hands full with the Shakturi plus their other ally, whose name I keep forgetting. (Er, another insectoid race.) So I reluctantly accept the peace.

But my ships are still restless for a fight. I keep two fleets at home and dispatch one to Helu, along with 12 troops. Time to take the fight to the enemy.

Prob should add a spoiler warning to your title.

Grotius -> RE: Quick and nasty: a Securan story (12/10/2011 1:08:45 AM)

Good idea. Also, it didn't turn out to be "quick and nasty." But I may leave that bit anyway.
