LarryP -> Text unreadable - game not playable for me (6/7/2011 12:50:10 AM)

I've tried at least ten different fonts and they just don't help. The text is unreadable in most places. It's sad because I really want to play this game, but I can't read tooltips most of the time, and menu information.

I have Widescreen monitors and Win7 on all my desktops. I don't know what else to try. The game is unplayable for me at this point. Yes I tried windowed mode and it helped none at all.

PrinzHenrich -> RE: Text unreadable - game not playable for me (6/7/2011 2:25:06 PM)

Hmm please send me some printscreen.

LarryP -> RE: Text unreadable - game not playable for me (6/7/2011 6:34:58 PM)

Since I can't use the capture program I have with Horse and Musket running, what do you suggest me to use to capture the screen?

PrinzHenrich -> RE: Text unreadable - game not playable for me (6/7/2011 9:28:51 PM)

Press PrntScrn buttom?

LarryP -> RE: Text unreadable - game not playable for me (6/7/2011 9:40:35 PM)

PrintScreen hasn't worked so far, unless I'm looking in the wrong folders for the picture files.

PrinzHenrich -> RE: Text unreadable - game not playable for me (6/7/2011 10:56:45 PM)

Press print screen and the open paint paste (ctrl+v) and save (ctrl+s).

This is with arial bold. Here is a sample and this is one of the better ones:

These in the field, all the popups are unreadable:

PrinzHenrich -> RE: Text unreadable - game not playable for me (6/8/2011 4:29:37 PM)

Well, try Verdana maybe, but I suppoused nothing will change. In my opinion on this screens the text are readable, but it is my personal opinion;

LarryP -> RE: Text unreadable - game not playable for me (6/8/2011 5:53:14 PM)

You consider this readable? Maybe it's because you know ahead of time what everything says. I tried verdana and tens of others. For a game made in 2009 this is not acceptable. I even put the game on my laptop with Vista and it was actually worse.

Maybe you have right, I see: fire coverage and 2/Konigsegg but it should be bigger letters. On this prints units are highlighted. If in Chotusitz not, try redo of Chotusitz see:http://www.matrixgames.com/forums/tm.asp?m=2833819

LarryP -> RE: Text unreadable - game not playable for me (6/9/2011 12:16:00 AM)

Nothing got better, it's actually worse if anything.

I really am frustrated with this game now. I'm very sorry I bought it at this point. Just being able to read the tooltip popup messages and the text in other places should not be an issue. No fonts have made it good enough and there is nothing left to do that I know of. Before I bought the game, I did a thorough forum read and I saw there may be some issues with text and graphics. I should have been smarter with my decision to buy.

Now that someone else is here, do you think the text is readable and OK for play? [&:]

PrinzHenrich -> RE: Text unreadable - game not playable for me (6/9/2011 4:41:58 PM)

Me? Yes I still can say that text is readable for me. I have played more than 100 battles in this game, and really many PBEM, noone complain for text so far... I will forced to change text view in next part of game, maybe another patch (2.0?) will be included?
Thanks anyway for info.

PrinzHenrich -> RE: Text unreadable - game not playable for me (6/10/2011 6:26:13 PM)

Programer and Main developer (TIM) had been informed :)

LarryP -> RE: Text unreadable - game not playable for me (6/10/2011 7:42:01 PM)

PrinzHenrich -> RE: Text unreadable - game not playable for me (6/10/2011 8:34:16 PM)

MichaelCooney -> RE: Text unreadable - game not playable for me (6/16/2011 4:57:23 PM)

You definitely do not want to use a bold font. As you point out, the text is quite small and the extra pixels that boldface adds just muddies the water since there isn't room to smooth it out. Could you remove the bold and upload an image of that?

What resolution do you normally run your system in? The game runs in 1024x768. If you're running in a higher resolution, such as 1200x1024, then the graphics card will stretch the image slightly to make it this resolution. This stretching doesn't always work so well on LCD screens though and the "jaggies" are more noticeable at lower resolutions, where it has less space to smooth out the stretch. The solution is usually a video card setting telling the card not to stretch lower resolutions for full screen apps. (Or you can try setting your Windows Desktop to 1024x768 when playing the game).

That being said, of course, you indicated that it didn't look any better when running it in Windowed mode and there is no stretching involved in Windowed mode at all. But if you ran this Windowed mode test with a bold face font, it's going to look just as bad.

I guess I'd ask that you run Windowed mode with the default font settings and upload a screen scrape of a tool tip here. Then I can see if something is wrong with the image output or if the font/size we chose simply isn't working for you.

LarryP -> RE: Text unreadable - game not playable for me (6/16/2011 6:08:48 PM)

Here is the default font and in window mode:

sabre1 -> RE: Text unreadable - game not playable for me (6/18/2011 4:22:01 PM)

I can't read it.

I was going to get the game, but not until you get this figured out LarryP...

LarryP -> RE: Text unreadable - game not playable for me (6/18/2011 5:30:14 PM)

Well they're all like that too, every pop up tooltip.

MichaelCooney -> RE: Text unreadable - game not playable for me (6/27/2011 9:16:00 PM)

I have to admit I'm a little stumped on this one. This is what it (normally) looks like out of the box:

[image]local://upfiles/5347/F1BC4E16BA904E77A9E401AFC8E78483.jpg[/image]

Note that the Description box is Schwarzwald and the Tool Tip is Courier New. Your image seems to show the same font in both places. Moreover, yours is showing as bold whereas these aren't.

I've only seen this occur when the specified font isn't installed and Windows picks something close. That's why we went with Courier New though as it comes with Windows. When you look in C:\WINDOWS\Fonts, does it show you Courier New?

MichaelCooney -> RE: Text unreadable - game not playable for me (6/27/2011 9:26:09 PM)

I specify Georgia font in my HorseNMusket.ini file (FontName=Georgia) as I prefer the look better. Still though, this only changes the unit description at the bottom. I'll have to think about this...

LarryP -> RE: Text unreadable - game not playable for me (6/27/2011 10:33:39 PM)

Do you also put the font name at the "FontName33=" and "FontFileName=" places? Like this:

FontName=Georgia
FontName33=Georgia
FontFileName=Georgia.ttf

Is that how you do it?

PrinzHenrich -> RE: Text unreadable - game not playable for me (6/28/2011 2:55:12 PM)

I have suggested to do it like that, and you wrote that is nothing better .....

LarryP -> RE: Text unreadable - game not playable for me (6/28/2011 5:46:37 PM)

OK. I was wondering if I was doing it wrong. I changed all three when I tried the different fonts. Nothing helped enough.

MichaelCooney -> RE: Text unreadable - game not playable for me (6/29/2011 6:33:48 PM)

You don't have to specify the .ttf since it comes with Windows (likely) and FontName33 appears to be a debug hold over. So "FontName=Georgia" should be all you need. Did you notice a different then when you specified this font?

I did some searching for problems with bold text unexpectedly appearing. Apparently it's not altogether uncommon. This is the best explanation/solution that I found. I went through the steps myself and they're safe.

-------------------------------------------------
The problem is due to the fact that the font registry entries have got corrupted. The fonts affected are Arial, Courier, Times New Roman, Marlett, Terminal etc.

The programs like IE, Outlook (in mails) and Firefox fail when they try to locate these fonts. The beauty is that these fonts still exist in the <OS drive>\windows\fonts folder.

To fix this issue follow these steps:
1. Click Start -> Run. If you cannot locate the 'Run' item, then click 'Window Key' + 'R'.
2. In the run box, type: c:\windows\fonts (Replace c: with the drive letter where the OS is installed)
- Can also just open Explorer and traverse to C:\Windows\Fonts
3. The fonts window will open. Click 'Alt' + 'F' to activate the menu. Click 'Install New Font' in the menu.
4. In the folders dialog, browse to c:\windows\fonts where c: is the OS drive letter.
5. All fonts would now appear under 'List all fonts'.
6. Click 'Select All' and then click 'Install'.
7. Confirm the windows permission dialog.
8. A replace file dialog would appear. Click on 'Yes' to each and every dialog that appears. This will ensure that fresh entries for fonts are written in the registry. To avoid clicking, press and hold 'Alt' key - then press 'Y' key for every dialog that appears.
