Bullwinkle58 -> Emergency Reinforcements--Japan (11/14/2010 11:20:10 PM)

This is just to illustrate and document the emergency reinforcement package Japan gets should the Allies trigger them by landing on the HI or one of the other hexes under Japan's national control. Methods and codes to see which hexes are involved in natioanl control can be found in post #s 7, 10, 11, 12, and 15 in the thread at

http://www.matrixgames.com/forums/tm.asp?m=2620744&mpage=1

Methodology:

1) I landed portions of two US Army infantry regiments (19th and 21st) at a cleaned-out Nagoya on January 29, 1942.

2) Japanese emergency reinforcements triggered during the Japanese phases.

3) The Japanese package is very straightforward compared to some of the Allies'. I did not test, but assume, that there is only one Japanese package used for all situations.

Bullwinkle,

Certainly appreciate these playtests of yours, sir.  Keep up the good work.

My only comment is how much those garrison divisions stink.  Nice AV, but 35 exp. / 35 morale?  Yuck!

Shark7 -> RE: Emergency Reinforcements--Japan (11/15/2010 1:01:01 AM)

Surprised we dont' get a bunch of 'Angry Mob Militia' groups. One of the main reasons we didn't go ahead and invade was fear that literally every man, woman and child in Japan would take up arms and fight. But I guess at some point you can't include everything. [;)]

Andy Mac -> RE: Emergency Reinforcements--Japan (11/15/2010 1:05:42 AM)

These are the training cadres that provide basic training for recruits mobilised for war hence the depot status.

They are not fornt line units but in an emergancy any help is usefull.

Unlike allies japan is not fighting a global war therefore cannot borrow forces from other theatres.

Had I had time I would have added a one off PP injection to allow the Japanese to draw troops from Manchuria but wasnt possible

CV2 -> RE: Emergency Reinforcements--Japan (11/15/2010 1:17:48 AM)

By the time Japan gets invaded, the Japanese player probably has PPs to burn. Creating some garrison forces in Manchuria to cover the garrison requirement would probably serve the same purpose Andy.

d0mbo -> RE: Emergency Reinforcements--Japan (11/15/2010 12:18:04 PM)

thanks bullwinkle!

Since these arrive when the Home Islands are invaded, shouldn't these be called the "Home Depot Divisions"? [:'(]

And they attack with 2x4's, hammers and screwdrivers no doubt. [8|] [:D]

That's why their morale is so Lowe.

Q-Ball -> RE: Emergency Reinforcements--Japan (11/16/2010 1:55:10 PM)

Bullwinkle, thanks for the test! You didn't need to paste a screenie of each division though; they look the same!

As far as PPs, every time I have played Japan, I find I have excess PPs starting in mid-1943 or so; by then you have earned enough to pull everyone from Manchuria you really want to. Especially by 1945, the Japanese should have plenty to buy all those depot divisions.

They suck at first, but the other thing is after 60 days or so, they should be OK brigade-sized units. (50-ish EXp, and better morale)

d0mbo -> RE: Emergency Reinforcements--Japan (11/16/2010 3:36:07 PM)

Been wondering for a while:

the japanese have some 'guard'units (i mean the regular ones, not the depot DIV listed in this thread). Their experience and morale is not higher, and in some cases, lower than other, regular army units. the 'guard'suffix seem to implicate a special/elite status.

I know the AE stats are well researched, so no doubt the game is right. So why were they called guards if there was nothing special about them?

Mike Solli -> RE: Emergency Reinforcements--Japan (11/16/2010 3:51:20 PM)

The Imperial Guards Division which fought with the 25 Army in Malaya through Singapore, was really just a mediocre division.  I believe they spent the remainder of the war as a garrison unit in Summatra.

They are called guards in the game because the Japanese called them guards[;)]

Seriously: The main task of the Imperial Guard was to guard the sacred life of the Emperor of Japan. They recruited their soldiers from all over Japan while other (regular) divisions only recruited in their respective divisional districts. But they were not exactly an elite formation and had many ceremonial duties.

The Imperial Guards Division (later 2nd Guards Division) that served in Malaya had no previous combat experience while other divisions (like the 5th Divisions) had served in China for years before being committed in Malaya. As a result, the combat performance of the Imperial Guards in Malaya was not as good as the performance of other, more experienced divisions.

The Guards Mixed Brigade (in December 1941 at Tokyo with 1st and 2nd Guards Regiments) had seen some action in China in 1940/41 and taken part in the invasion of Indochina but was withdrawn to Japan before to the Pacific War. This brigade was later expanded to form the 1st Guards Division but it stayed (as did the later-formed 3rd Guards Division) in Japan to protect the Emperor and garrison Tokyo (3rd Guards Division garrisoned Kyoto and guarded the imperial palace there).

Alfred -> RE: Emergency Reinforcements--Japan (11/16/2010 7:36:48 PM)

I could be mistaken but I always thought, in keeping with their ceremonial duties, there was a height requirement for recruitment to a Guards unit.

Alfred

erstad -> RE: Emergency Reinforcements--Japan (12/4/2010 7:06:41 PM)

Interesting fact: Invading the Pescadores also triggers Japanese reinforcements.

I would guess that means Formosa does as well. Only a guess.

michaelm -> RE: Emergency Reinforcements--Japan (12/5/2010 2:06:40 AM)

That island has an incorrect nationality code - it has been set to Japan Mainland.

Not sure what it should have. Bump the question upstairs.[;)]

BTW, Formosa wont activate the reinforcements

erstad -> RE: Emergency Reinforcements--Japan (12/5/2010 2:29:56 AM)

Ah, so it's a bug!

Cuttlefish, I demand you march those guys into the ocean! [:D]

(Just kidding, of course. You play the hand you were dealt)
