FYI, Storm Eagle Studios is Jim Rose + Norm Koger (rather than an outside entity) and as such are both the developers and publishers of Norm Koger's next few projects, as far as I can tell.

You'll get the clearest picture from reading a copy of Norm Koger's Usenet posting in this thread.

Norm's Usenet post claimed that it was just about ready to kick out of the door...

What are the sys requirements for the game?

Is an editor included with it?

From what I understand a campaign mode is being released as an expansion pack later for the current tactical sea battles game.

Drinking a cool brew; thinking about playing my next wargame....

Well, since Storm Eagle hasn't released anything about that, nobody but they probably know...

I think it looks awesome and as far as I can tell the gameplay looks "comprehensive".

It is the first of a series too. WWI and WWII battles will no doubt follow.

Interestingly, it will also have "16 player online multi-player". Kind of like an IL2 or EAW on the sea. Or ... an FPS for grogs. Very cool :)

I wonder if there will be a subscription element in the price?

I'm not particularly interested in the subject, but the game sounds awesome. I like the fact you can try out a full scenario for 30 days before you buy. Nice gesture on Norm's part, and shows he has confidence in his design.

Damn....very impressive!!

I was totally expecting some boring looking top-down view 2-d game with typical bland wargame graphics....
You know, the kind of stuff you see from small developers...

Not this at all!

Hey, maybe we'll finally see a decent Jutland game!

This is a great development for computer wargamers, IMO. While Talonsoft seemed to stagnate on their older designs (Tiller's engine), it's been a while since a wargame company was dedicated to producing games that play good and look really good too. That was one of TS's strongpoints.

Further, the subject matter of "Distant Guns" is one of my favorites, and I too can't wait for the WWI era to be covered as well. The days of battleship supremacy and coal smoke is awesome. Seems like Rose and Koger are dedicated to choosing interesting topics and doing them right, rather than pandering to the "American WWII experience" that the mass market requires. I'd rather see games like Norm's Franco-Prussian War scenarios in "Age of Rifles" than another "Americans in tanks" game.

If DG plays as well as it seems it will, I'll ride that bandwagon for as long as they adhere to their stated values. [&o]

HPS has already covered this subject in their realtime naval game Tsushima...It will be interesting to see some comparisons made.

My only regret is that there is no turn based campaign game, similar in style to SPI Russo-Japanese War game "Red Sun Rising", on the pc gaming market.

If you read Norm's own home page, you see that a campaign game, including some degree of land war representation, is planned for "Distant Guns". That will be excellent, but won't necessarily limit the enjoyment of DG as a naval battle sim.

Also, I am guessing that DG and Tiller's "Tsushima" are not comparable at all. DG looks more in the mold of "Fighting Steel", with better fleet and formation management. We shall see, though... [;)]

Wow,

I was wondering when Jim would come out of the closet on this one.
