CHS 1.05 scenario files now available

Post by Andrew Brown »

Update 2005-09-07 (again):
Updated scenario files for CHS, version 1.05, have been uploaded to my WitP website. They can be downloaded via the Scenarios page on the site.

I will wait a little while before updating the CHS packages (that include all of the art). Given my recent track record I expect that another error will be found, so I will hold off for a few days. So if you have not downloaded CHS before and you are interested, please download the 1.04 package, then the 1.05 scenarios.

Here is the list of fixes in 1.05:

Code: Select all

 Changes in version 1.05:
 -----------------------
 1. Shipyards were missing from the Allied ports of Columbo and
     Bombay. Fixed.

 2. The Soviet base "Ohka - Sakalin" renamed to "Ohka".

 3. Base Waigeu Island in Dutch New Guinea renamed to Waigeo Island.

 4. Port Alice Base force added at the new Port Alice base in
     Canada.

 5. Sarawak Force base force, at Kuching, changed to SE Asia HQ
     (instead of ABDA) and 6inch CD guns changed to fixed guns.

 6. Karachi oil centres corrected. Karachi now has 0 oil in scenario
     155 and 200 daily in scenario 154 (there is 200 daily oil at the
     Middle East base in scenario 155).

Let's see how we go this time...

Andrew
Update 2005-09-07:
Well, I have done it yet again. Immediately after releasing the latest update another fault was found. The shipyards in Columbo and Bombay are missing in CHS 1.04. I am updating the scenario yet again and 1.05 will be available soon.

Sorry again for my incompetence.

Andrew
Combined Historical Scenario (CHS) version 1.04 is now available. There are a few fixes included in 1.04 that were found in 1.03 even before the availability of that update was formally announced (!!). I hope a bit more time passes before errors are found in 1.04, but we will see.

The scenario is available for download via the CHS page on my WitP website.

If you already have a previous version of CHS installed, you can download the update package, which only contains the updated art, scenarios and documentation. Otherwise you will need to download the complete package which cointains all of the CHS art.

The files themselves are kindly being hosted by Spooky, rogueusmc and AlaskanWarrior. Many thanks for their generosity.

The scenario is only able to be played on my alternative WitP map. That map is available for download from my WitP map page.

Rather than type too much more, here is the complete README file from the scenario package:

 Combined Historical Scenario Readme
 ===================================

 This is the Combined Historical Scenario (CHS) art and scenarios
 package - Version 1.04, released 5th September 2005.

 Introduction
 ============
 The CHS scenario and art have been created through the combined efforts
 of a number of players of War in the Pacific. It is based on the
 official scenario 15 and is a "full war" scenario. Every effort has
 been made to increase historical accuracy in OOB, TOE, map, aircraft
 and ship art and bases.

 Included Scenarios
 ==================
 There are two CHS scenarios included in this package:

 1. Scenario 155: The original CHS scenario using Andrew Brown's extended
    map, which includes the additional areas of the Middle East and
    Panama.
 2. Scenario 154: A modified CHS scenario that uses Andrew Brown's
    standard map, without the map extension.

 There is no version of CHS for the official map.

 The scenarios are sometimes updated. For the latest versions of these
 scenarios, please see the scenario page of Andrew Brown's WitP
 website at:
 www.bur.st/~akbrown/witp/scenarios.html

 Prerequisites
 =============
 Before the CHS scenario(s) can be installed and used, Andrew Brown's map
 MUST already be installed:

 1. Andrew Brown's Map Version 4.x
 2. Andrew Brown's Extended Map Version 4: if wishing to play scenario
    155.

 This scenario should only be installed AFTER the map package(s) are
 installed.

 The map packages are available from Andrew Brown's WitP website at:
 www.bur.st/~akbrown/witp/map_mod.html

 Installation
 ============
 For detailed instructions on how to install the CHS scenarios and art,
 please see the documentation supplied with this package, found in the
 "CHS_documentation" folder. What follows is a brief description of the
 installation process.

 To install the CHS scenarios and art, do the following:

 1) Ensure that War in the Pacific is not running.

 2) Install Andrew Brown's War in the Pacific alternative map, if not
    already installed. The map files can be found at Andrew Brown's War
    in the Pacific website at: www.bur.st/~akbrown/witp/map_mod.html

 3) Install Andrew Brown's War in the Pacific extended map, if not
    already installed. The map files can be found at Andrew Brown's
    War in the Pacific website at: www.bur.st/~akbrown/witp/map_mod.html.
    Note that it is not necessary to install this map extension if you
    only intend to play scenario 154.

 4) Ensure that you do not have any modded game art present in the game,
    except for Andrew Brown's map. That is - alternative plane and ship
    art files should be removed. This is so that a backup of the
    official game art can be made, and so that the official art can be
    easily restored using the ModSelect utility.

 5) Using WinZip or any other zip file utility, unzip the CHS package
    file to the War in the Pacific game folder. The game is normally
    installed in the folder "C:\Matrix Games\War in the Pacific" but it
    may be in another location if you chose to install the game elsewhere
    or you have two copies of the game installed.

    When unzipping the file, ensure that folder names are used for
    extracting the files. In WinZip. for example, ensure that the "Use
    folder names" checkbox is checked before extracting the files.

    If prompted to confirm the overwriting of a file, select "Yes" to
    overwrite the file with the one from this zip file.

 6) Run the "ModSelect" batch file utility (ModSelect.bat), which will
    be located in the folder where War in the Pacific is installed
    (usually "C:\Matrix Games\War in the Pacific"). Select the map
    version of CHS that you wish to play - the version using Andrew
    Brown's standard map, or the version using Andrew Brown's extended
    map. The corresponding map, along with the CHS game art, will be
    loaded.

 7) Run War in the Pacific and select the appropriate CHS scenario for
    the map version that was loaded:

    * Scenario 155 if using Andrew Brown's extended map.
    * Scenario 154 if using Andrew Brown's standard map.

 Updating a previous installation
 ================================
 If you already have CHS installed, then do the following to ensure that
 the correct CHS art is loaded for use with the scenario:

 1) Using WinZip or any other zip file utility, unzip the CHS package
    file to the War in the Pacific game folder. The game is normally
    installed in the folder "C:\Matrix Games\War in the Pacific" but it
    may be in another location if you chose to install the game elsewhere
    or you have two copies of the game installed.

 2) Run the "ModSelect" batch file utility (ModSelect.bat), which will
    be located in the folder where War in the Pacific is installed
    (usually "C:\Matrix Games\War in the Pacific"). Select the map
    version of CHS that you wish to play - the version using Andrew
    Brown's standard map, or the version using Andrew Brown's extended
    map. The corresponding map, along with the CHS game art, will be
    loaded.

 3) Run War in the Pacific and select the appropriate CHS scenario for
    the map version that was loaded:

    * Scenario 155 if using Andrew Brown's extended map.
    * Scenario 154 if using Andrew Brown's standard map.

 Uninstalling CHS
 ================
 To uninstall the CHS scenario and game art, run the ModSelect utility
 and select to restore the Official map and art. Note that this does not
 permanently remove any of the CHS files.

 Feedback
 ========
 All feedback on the CHS scenario is most welcome, especially since it
 is still a work in progress that requires more testing and development.
 The CHS contributors can be contacted via the Matrix Games War in the
 Pacific messag board, located at: www.matrixgames.com/forums

Anyone have the data for Middle East, Aden, Panama, etc. on Andrews extended map to add to the data file for Sonny's base distance calculator?

If the 1.04 update only fixes the art glitch and a couple of prep locations for units in China, can I just put the art files in and patch a game in progress? It would leave out the prep fixes, but I can deal with that and save me having to re-do turn 1 {a massive undertaking}.

I just had a very good Pearl Harbor result. Mag explosions on Oklahoma, Arizona and Phoenix. I made Tennessee, Maryland and Pennsylvania arrive on Dec 8 with damage {including fires and flooding} to get around them being torpedo targets. I used 30-10-10 {Sys-Fires-Flood} for Tennessee and Maryland and 45-10-0 for Pennsylvania. I think my numbers for damage on them might be a little high from RL.

Considering the massive ammount of data needing to be imput, the few number of errors is remarkable. Great job to the entire CHS team. My many thanks. And my wife's many curses[:D].

One more quick little bug fix...Bombay and Columbo are sans Ship repair yards. AB is already on top of it and will fix it shortly...

Now if matrix will just give us the necessary code to patch games in progress....

It's a good thing I didn't update my download page properly as there is a fault in 1.04 as well (*sigh*). 1.05 will hopefully be available soon.

Regarding game restarts. This is what annoys me so much about making errors. I make a mistake, and someone has just wasted many hours doing turn 1. The latest error is not critical, but it is very annoying. The shipyards in Columbo (40) and Bombay (20) were missing. The Allied player can get by without them, I guess - especially in play vs the AI - but it is very annoying.

I also wish there was a way to patch games in progress...

Sorry again,
Andrew

Is it only the scenarios that will have to be updated for 1.05 (versus 1.04)?

Yes just database edits...a number mistyped here or forgotten there.

Even though this release has had fits and starts, many thanks to everyone for pointing out these small errors. With the vast amount of units and data for each unit, it is quite easy to overlook some things and the more eyes involved the better.

Anyone have the data for Middle East, Aden, Panama, etc. on Andrews extended map to add to the data file for Sonny's base distance calculator?

My calculator won't work for those "squigly" bases. It only uses direct air distances.

Also I will have to update it because the locations in my calculator are hard coded (copied into the program) instead of being read in from a file.

(I know, poor design[:o])

Since everyone has an editor included with the game, it would it not be easier just to let eveyone know about this then they can fix this relatively easy than to worry about coming out with 1.05 quickly. I mean it requires two locations to modified.... It will be included in a 1.5, but like you ahve stated before and I am in agreement with, let play this sucker... Opponents anyone??

For AI players this would be fine. For PBEM to ensure everyone has the exact same data they should get 1.05. AB indicated to me there were four or five other very minor changes to be included...

Yes I had started issuing orders for 1.03...but having learned my lesson I've taken to writing everything down ad nausem...so that when I decided to restart with 1.04 what took me four hours initially I compressed into 1 hour the second time.

IMO the Bombay/Columbo error was important enough to start fresh with 1.05 has I hadn't sent my turn out yet.

I tend to agree. I have uploaded the fixed (again) scenarios, but I will hold off on updating the packages for a little while to see what else gets discovered.

Please see the first message of this thread for details.

Where is that data? I can't remember where it is. Is it in one of the WitP folders? Or did someone extract/compile it (in which case my design was not as lazy as I thought[:D])?
