OT but not OT - Monitors and screen reselution

SPWaW is a tactical squad-level World War II game on single platoon or up to an entire battalion through Europe and the Pacific (1939 to 1945).

OT but not OT - Monitors and screen reselution

Post by omegaall »

This may seem OT but it does affect the various add-ons to SPWAW that are available.

What is your normal monitor and resolution?
Not a silly question as all the add-ons to SPWAW, such as OOB editors, Map editors, etc, all assume a certain monitor size and resolution. The big thing is none of the authors ever tell you what it is.

The big question have these authors got it right, in terms of screen size and resolution?

The reason for all this is simple: I started to write a bit of software to edit some SPWAW things. I was using 17" monitor at 1024 x 768. It dawned on me that some might still be in the land of 15” monitors so the app would not really run unless it has scroll bars etc to make it slightly useable. So far it now works on 17” monitor at 800 x 600 but the land of 15” monitors still exists I think.

I normally run a 17” monitor at 800 x 600
but run17" monitor at 1024 x 768 for special apps e.g. some OOB editors, Map Editors and Software development.

My question is: what is your normal monitor size and resolution?

This more of a question re the use of such apps as SPWAW Map editors, OOB editors than the actual game.

So what is your normal monitor size and resolution?

Its not an issue of being a problem or not.
I am just interested in determining what the average monitor size and resolution is.
I don't want to complete this software and end up having it diluted with scroll bars, ie will not fit on the general screen.

Through my bifocaled old eyes

19" 800 x 600

is still hard to see small things.

At work I have to use 17" 1024 x 768 so I know the difference.

Thanks for your replys.

I am working on it running nicely on a 17" with 800x 600. Saves some old people's eyes and mine writing it.

I run 15" on a laptop at 1024x768. After reading this post I tried 800x600 and it was way too big. I think somehow on my system the specs are a step up.

17" at 1024x768. I have no problem with SPWaW's 800x600 default. As a matter of fact, I'd like a further zoom-down for the game. The new infantry icons by Flashfyre get you closer in definition, and with all the graphics/sound mods, it would be great to get down into the trenches. I wanna get closer, not further away, like Close Combat does. The 800x600 "god's eye" view is fine with me.

What do you guys think--closer or further away? I definitely want CLOSER definition.

1200X1024 32 / 85hz

well at least i had it like this .. when i have my desktop like this the game insists on running at ??? with a refrech of 107.3hzh and 85hzv .. 107 is out of my monitors range ( ironicly if it did 120 vert it would be fine ) .. i have had to down step my refresh , on my desktop?! , to 75hz .. then the game runs ...

i'm suprized that their is no way to adjust this .. this is the first game i have ever played that you cannot adjust the screen , sound .. or .. anything.

Let me clear up a point here.

It’s NOT the monitor and resolution you start you SPWAW game in.

It IS your normal mode of operation in using, say the OOB editor, the Map editor etc in.

My reasoning for this is simple. I am in the middle of writing an OOB modifier with a database backend. I hope to dump all OOBs into this database. Details .. well just wait.

The screen size is important as I don't want to add scroll bars.
So from what I have seen here something set for 17" at 600x 800 suits most users and should be readable with a 15" at 1024x768.
