List of Pacific Carriers

Post by dereck »

I did some researching and I came up with the following list of fleet, light and escort carriers which served or were built by the US. As you can see I can only find 2 fleet carriers whose construction were cancelled. There's a number of carriers that were completed before the end of hostilities but never saw action as well as a number that were completed just after the end of the war but well before the June 1946 cut off point for this game.

Sorry about the columns not lining up. Despite my best efforts this is the best I can do :-(

Code: Select all

Ever been to the "Museum of Naval Avaiation" in Pensacola, FL?

Very nice. Has museum quality models of many of the CV/CVL/CVEs, and of course the best part, LOTS of aircraft. The center of the hanger is even a scaled-down CVL, with a F4F, TBM, and SBDs parked on it. Very clever.

And there's Dayton, "The Museum of the United States Air Force". OMG. It's DisneyWorld for airplane geeks (such as I am).

Hm. I wonder how the Naval Musem faired in the hurricane. Gonna check their website to see if all is ok. Those planes (several outside) are priceless. Would be a shame to have them damaged...

**** EDIT - "Cannot Find Server" when looking for naval.avaition.museum/home.html. That can't be good... [&:]

When I was in the Navy I went to Photo School in Pensacola, Florida and the training carrier they had for the AOCs (Aviation Officer Candidates) was the USS Lexington (CVT-16). I hear they've replaced the Lex with another carrier but I forget which one.

The carrier I served on is now an aircraft carrier museum in San Diego.

Been on the Intrepid (in New York), and the Yorktown (in Charleson). Would love to visit the Midway, as it's not an Essex class.

My brother (Knavey) served on the TR (CVN-71) from 89 - 94. I drove down from college to meet him when they pulled into Ft. Lauderdale, and got to tour the TR. Talk about a "Big Stick", she's definately it.
