An additional 353 troops from the 5th Sasebo SNLF were to land on the north side of New Guinea and march overland to Gili Gili. The landing craft carrying these troops were attacked and sunk by allied aircraft and the surviving soldiers swam ashore on Goodenough Island. They took no part in the battle and were withdrawn later.

Reinforcements totaling 568 men of the 3rd Kure SNLF and about 200 from the 5th Yokosuka SNLF arrived later as reinforcements. Also two light tanks.
