B-29 Recovery at Iwo Jima

Post by ZOOMIE1980 »

Anyone far enough along or playing an appropriate scenario know if the tactic of damaged B-29's on Home Island bombing missions using Iwo Jima as a recovery base is modelled at all in the game? If not, what use is Iwo Jima to the Allied player. For B25, A26 missions to supplement B29 missions or for use as another B29 base allowing shorter B29 missions with lower ops losses or things like P47 escorts rather than P51D escorts?

Not modelled, but you will find that plopping longer ranged escort aircraft there certainly helps your B-29's get through the crowd that will be waiting for them.

B-29's are no more immune then any other aircraft. Japan has fighters that can shoot them down by that point in time.

I keep forgetting about multi-based coordinated attack capabilities in the game. Shorter range escorts taking off from Iwo could join up with Saipan based B-29s and P-51D;s to help out. Great feature.

Don't keep forgetting about it. It is a make or break strategy thing that allows you to keep your shorter ranged fighters with your longer ranged bombers by spreading out the aircraft over more bases instead of the monster base with hundreds of aircraft.

It's all about power projection ... a lot tougher to deal with forward bases that have nothing but fighters while your rear base constantly sends bombers to the target and picks up escorts on the way while remaining safely to the rear. [;)]

You also need far less supplies at a fighter only base keeping your shipping to the rear with the heavies who are your real supply pigs.
