Welcome To the New Conquest of the Aegean Forum

Post by Shaun Wallace »

Hi Guys,

Welcome to the new Panther Games Conquest of the Aegean forum.

Here is a press release thats just gone out:
The Conquest of the Aegean on the Horizon!

New Wargame From Panther Games and Matrix Games

Woodbridge, NJ, June 11th, 2004 - Matrix Games and Panther Games (www.panthergames.com) are pleased to announce the development Airborne Assault: Conquest of the Aegean, a new wargame covering the battles for Greece, Crete and a hypothetical Malta operation during World War II. Designed by the talented historical wargame specialists at Panther Games and planned for release during fall 2004, Conquest of the Aegean will bring to life 20th Century warfare on ancient battlegrounds. A preview of Conquest of the Aegean will be shown in the Matrix Games booth at Origins 2004, starting June 24th.

Conquest of the Aegean is the third wargame released by Panther Games in their critically acclaimed Airborne Assault series. Reviews of the second game, Highway to the Reich, had this to say: “revolutionary”, “extraordinary”, “the new future of wargaming”. At its heart is “the best AI ever seen in any game”. As one GameSpot reviewer put it “It's hard to convey just how cool this system is, because not only does it eliminate the massive amount of micromanagement inherent in most wargames, but it does so in a way that makes it feel like you're really commanding forces in the field.”

David Heath, Director of Operations at Matrix Games, said “The genre of wargaming is lucky to have designers and developers as talented as the guys at Panther Games. We are proud to be publishing Conquest of the Aegean, which expands and enhances the Airborne Assault series in ways that gamers will love while covering some great battles from an often neglected theater.”

Conquest of the Aegean covers the entire Greek Campaign, where German, Greek, Italian, British and Commonwealth forces fought to halt the oncoming blitzkrieg before the start of Operation Barbarossa. Also included is the follow-on airborne-led assault on Crete, which proved to be a gamble for the Germans, but a very successful one. This tough island campaign pulls no punches as both sides fight tooth and nail to achieve success by holding the critical airfields. Finally, the road not taken… Malta was a thorn in the Axis side in the Mediterranean for the entire war. Planes based on Malta proved crucial to protecting British supplies and hindering German and Italian supply routes. While plans were discussed to attack this bastion, they were never executed. Conquest of the Aegean gives you have the ability to give the green light to the attack on Malta and fight as either side to see how things might have turned out.

In Conquest of the Aegean, players get to take on the role of either the Allied or German commanders and pit their wits against either a computer controlled opponent or a human opponent via LAN or the internet.

List of Planned Features

(Please note that this feature list is not final and may change before release.)

New Campaign Mode: Fight a series of scenarios where the outcome of each scenario affects the subsequent path of the campaign and the forces involved. Choose which forces to use in each engagement, including the ability to place units in reserve for rest and refit or commit them from the reserve for action.
Improved Interface, AI, Scenario and Map Maker
Enhanced Map Terrain Effects and New Map Graphics
More Terrain and Altitude Layers
New Weapons and Units
New Exit Tasks

Welcome all to Conquest of the Aegean ( COTA ). We're very excited about this product. The BIG new feature, of course, is the Campaign mode. This was without a doubt the most popularly requested feature we received for our HTTR wish list. With this feature you will now be able to fight a series of battles from Veve in northern Greece to Malta in the central Mediterranean. This will add a whole new dimension to the airborne assault game engine.

Paul Scobell and I will be at Origins this month ( Columbus, Ohio ) showing off the latest beta version. We'll be on the Matrix stand #1106. So come and see COTA before the rest of the world. [:)]

Wow! talk about an underrepresented topic too!
I'm essentially graphically and history oriented, unfortunately to connect the two I have to do maths. I hate maths.

This is totally uncalled for!! I am already in rehab for this genre addiction and this release is not going to help my recovery. [;)] Oh well!!!"wasting away again in Pantherville", "searching for my magnifier of print", "some people say there's a wargame to blame", "....but i know,.. its my own damn fault".

It's allready available for pre-order? [:D]

Seriusly, you rock!

I'm very ecited about the new features, campaing mode! This is something I thought wouldn't happen until the next two games (Normandy)!

Not to talk about Exit Tasks (something I demanded and opens a lot of possibilities, not to say if it's combined with the campaing mode!).

And all the improvements and additions to the terrain; and offcourse the modding tools!

Can't wait for the incoming (excellent, for sure) reviews, allready can read them "Panther Games makes revolution once again", and offcourse, can't wait for the game.

Excited I am [&o]

P.S: for forum navigation sake, could this one and HTTR fussioned in one forum (something like AA Series, or Panther Games Series).

I am taking a beer to celebrate this announcement !

Thumbs Up to the Panther Games team [:D]

The whole Greek campaign and Malta included as well as Crete is a very nice surprise, especially this campaign feature.

Can't wait to put my hands on this.

I don't know why but every potential expansion pack ends being a full game (HTTR was coincived as n expnsion of RDO initilly). [:D]

It's great cause this game is somewhat strange in concept for being bout western front, and not the typical campaing.

The campaign feature will be excellent!

But I presume a "campaign" is limited to land warfare.

My victiorious infantry would have difficulity, moving to the next battle, if I have to cross water.

This reminds me of a phrase in the engineering industry called "feature creep". Send a team of engineers to add pontoons to a plane for water landings and give them four weeks to get it done. A year later they come back, with the first plane which can also function as a submarine. :)

I guess the Panther team besides being wargamers at heart are true engineers. :)

LOL

Takes an engineer to know one![;)]

I might add that the Panther Prowlers ( our intrepid beta testers ) have to share some of the responsibility for this. [:)]

I agree with Mark about his analysis of engineers, being one myself. [:D]

I guess that wages for testing full versions are higher than for small extensions. [:'(]

Forgive me if this has been asked before, but I forget: will the new features (especially AI logic) of COTA be ported back to HTTR in a patch?

Thanks!

Yes they will, but for a nominal fee and not a free patch. Which for me is a welcome sight, no longer does buying the next version make the old one obsolete. I believe also it will take sometime after COTA is released before we will see the upgrade, how long they expect I haven't heard.
