The Full Monty

Post by mogami »

Hi, These are my results in recent (on going) test of Scenario 1 versus Allied AI
This is an Alpha test (I'm testing not playing) Please confine remarks or questions
to how the program works or interface don't get exicited about events you think are
not realistic. (The game needs to be tested in order to be tweeked and we really don't
require too much input concerning things we can see for our selves) My test is mainly
to run Japanese production.
I've edited a lot of the reports down to conserve space and time.

The plan is to conquer the NEI,PI,Malaysia as rapidly as possible while making progress
toward future action in South Pacific. In China I would like to secure the transport network
from Canton in the south to Yenen in the north. Eliminate all enemy units to the east of this
line. I have no plans to move beyond this secure border. 15th Army is to advance and capture
Rangoon and await reinforcment. (It will remain on the defensive after capturing Rangoon)
25th Army is to capture Singapore as soon as possible. 14th Army reduce PI while 16th Army
secures the remainder or NEI.

All major units of 14th, 15th, 16th and 25th Armies will move to historic targets
with 2 exceptions. 1 Div of 14th Army will reinforce 16th Army. It will be replaced
by the sole Southern Army reserve div (the 32nd)(There will be
a delay of around 2 weeks while this unit relocates and awaits
pickup by transports. (Div will land at Manila after that base is captured.)(14th Army also
will be getting a further Bde and 2 Combat Engineer Rgts-landing at Manila after capture)
Using the historic "targeted" bases
allows full preparation points. Many of the South Army Bde/Rgt/SNLF units will go in
"cold turkey" (hopefully against undefended targets) These will mostly be located in
the South/Central Pacific)

For aircombat I use the default altiude settings. (6k for level bomber 10k for divebomber
5k for carrier torpedo 6k for LB torpedo (they still attack at 200 feet) 10k for fighter
I do change alt on search/recon/asw (lower it normally)

Good stuff, I look forward to reading more... One small correction though: In your post about the PH strike, you mention the "Ogalala" as being hit. The correct spelling is "Ogallala" I believe. I may be wrong, but thats how I remember the town in Neb. being spelled... Like I said, only a minor thing.

Getting the oilers nailed so early is gonna hurt.

Hi, Your right I don't like losing tankers. However I did sink Lexington and Enterprise. Hiryu has repaired down to 24 system damage (at that rate she needs another 2-3 months in the yard.
Of course the repair yard at Tokyo is working on a dozen ships. I'm thinking of moving a few to other repair yards. (The Yard at Shanghai has around 30 ships currently. I'm worried about all the subs in the area. Pescadore is not a yard and another 10 or so damaged ships are waiting for a TF of 14 DD to arrive and start clearing out those subs.)

The PH strike force was moving to support the landings on Wake when the USN CV followed and caught the replenishment TF. I turned the CV around and dealt with them the next day.

Currently I'm preparing for the next large operation. The capture of Noumea and the bases between there and Canton Island.
Should be ready within a month. (A lot of units/ships/fuel/supply have to be moved and staged at Luganville) The port still needs to build 1 level (3) and the airfield 1 level (4)

I've pretty much wore out my land units. I've ran low on supply
every where (but that should change now that large convoys of resource and oil are loading. Those Wellingtons at Batavia made it difficult before. (but on the plus side the AI lost the airgroups that most players would have retained to protect India with.
I don't plan on attacking India but Rangoon has little to worry about and it is busy destroying all the airfields within fighter escort range.)

I'm seeing a enemy build up around Noumea. I just dispatched
another CVL and CVE to reinforce Junyo and the Canton area.

Shokaku and Zuikaku are moving to refuel and cover PM area.

Kaga Akagi and Soryu are moving to Luganville.

In a few weeks every BB except Ise will be at Luganville. (along with all the consorts)

14th Army is regrouping/rebuilding at Manila it is the main reserve.

25th Army is sending 1 Div to capture Adaman Island. 1 Div to reinforce 15th Army (it will move to Bangkok)
1 Div will remain Singapore while the last div (the Imp Guard) moves to Luganville.

16th Army is regrouping/rebuilding on Java. The SNLF units will mop up supported as needed by the larger formations.

The Noumea Operation currently has 2 Div, 1 Bde 2 Combat Engineer Rgts assigned. Nearby (PM are 3 more Bde and 6 SNLF type units) Also the South Sea's Detachment (Bde) had moved into area incase it was needed for PM operation. Currently it is moving to Luganville.

15 submarines are guarding the coast of Australia (near the ports and breaks in Great Barrier Reef) another 15 have surrounded Noumea with 12 more off to the east below Canton Island.

This turn I moved 70 Betty/Nell to Truk (waiting for Lunga or Luganville to reach size 4) 70 Sally and 70 Zero moved to within 1-2 days arrival in area.

Everything now depends on the speed the units recover. The speed the engineers can build. And the arrival of fuel and supply.

Feb 1942 should be very interesting (turn 50 required 4 hours. The longest since turn 1)

Naval battle at 32,63
Air attack on TF at 52,100
Sub attack at 56,46

I never liked that in UV either. Watching 5min+ of a navy battle in location 32,63. What does 32,63 mean?

Wish they would replace it with (i.e) 60 miles south of Singapore, and sofort. Should not be hard to implement? Just find the nearest base (of atleast size x?) from the battle location, and count the direction and range using the hex numbers.

Would be a nice thing for immersion. Hex numbers dont mean anything, the historical names of the bases do.

another thread---but it looks like the Alpha Test might just be it.

One point. How were you able to land at Palembang on the
first day of the War? Wouldn't the sailing of Japanese Troop
Transports right by Singapore kind of destroy ANY possibility of
suprise in East Asia? Looks like you had a lot of fun...., and 2by3
has a lot of work ahead of them.

Hi, I think operations will come to a halt no matter what I would like to do. The units simply wear out. Also I placed a severe drain on my supply. I'm hoping a quiet period will allow the production to catch up.

The early period is like inflating a giant balloon. Everything is on the outside with nothing within to support the structure.
I captured Canton Island on turn 1. Over 100 engineers landed.
52 turns later they have finished 50 percent of next level. I can't even put my ships into port. (So enemy subs can still attack them if they move there)

Only the lack of allied forces allows the expansion. But I figure it is better for Japan to take bases while they are empty and then try to prepare their defense. I really do not forsee any great adventures after I conclude the upcoming South Pacific Operation.

I hope to secure enough bases to prevent the allies from getting within range of Japan in 1944. (Hopefully it will take 1944 to achive the 1943 position)

Hi, I think by the time we are finished the Japanese player will need to add at least 2 weeks to my time table excepting of course those locations the Japanese actually landed earlier.

One thing I have yet to use is fast transport. If this were an actual game against a human allie I would move slower and many of the undefended bases within LBA would be preformed via FT. (rather then have many slow transports steaming around as targets)

The Japanese will most likely need to spend much of the first month actually staging ships and units to allow for a similair explosion of conquest in Jan 42. They will spend Dec 41 closing/capturing allied airfields and then follow up by capturing all the smaller bases around each airfield.

Also enemy surface naval units will need to be driven out or destroyed. (can't really have 1 transport sailing in unsecure waters)

Mainly at this point I am interested in how Japanese production operates. As a result I exploited current settings to allow for rapid capture of oil/resource producing bases. I can't check production without the material. I think players will like the system. It allows for input regarding direction of the economy without going overboard. Supply-oil-resource dictate growth. You can only alter industry/production if you have the means. (You have to choose what to build as this expends the means to build other systems.) (If you choose to expand the heavy industry at a base this consumes the supply that instead could have expanded your repair shipyard. Supply is not produced in the quanity seen in PacWar. (Also in PacWar growth was automatic if random. In WITP you actually have to make a input that consumes supply to enlarge a system. You can not create a new factory only change it or enlarge existing ones.)

If you get too eager or don't carefully consider the future you can run Japan right out of supply. (In my first go through before I learned more about the system I used almost every point of supply in the Islands (and outside bases with production) before I ever issued a single order to my military  )

Mogami -
Not sure if you're familiar with Bombing the Reich, but it had a pretty complicated production system for Germany. It's been patched and tweaked now so it's actually what I would consider a pretty nice system. If you're familiar with that game, could you comment on WitP's similarities/differences? (Within the limits of the NDA of course...)
Thanks for keeping us in the know with your updates.

Torpedo hits on Pennsylvania?

Post by Genda »

I am a little disappointed on the PH attack to see 3 BB take torpedo hits that historically could not have happened. Is the game assuming that there were not drydocked or inboard of other ships? This gives the Japanese side an sizable advantage!

While you're correct in pointing out that the PA was impervious to Torps (she was in drydock with two DDs, I believe), I think we'd be stretching the limits of programming ability to track exactly where in the harbor (every harbor in the Pacific, for that matter) the individual ships are. I agree it gives the Japanese player the possibility of an unfair advantage, but I can live with that. The Arizona didn't go down in this attack as an example of it cutting both ways...

Hi, I understand and concur with all the expressions desiring correctness and accuracy. My response is does it matter if a BB is sunk during the PH strike by torpedos or bombs or is it more important that a correct amount of total damaged be inflicted no matter the cause (since this is not a tactical game but a stratigic operational level game)

If the designer left out the animations and you only saw the results of combat (not the details) There would be less room for doubt. I personally enjoy the animation and tactical detail but don't worry as much what weapon does the damage as long as it is not too little nor too much.

In the big picture, for me the game has to be playable and produce acceptable results. I realize that from the very first turn history will be left behind. The players will use their knowledge of history and their own ideas to create a new set of results. They will invent new blunders and oversights while they avoid those of their historical counter parts. TF will be commanded by the best leaders onhand and certain persons blamed for poor results in history will be avoided. (Thus placing ones currently held in more esteem in the position of commanding disasters)

We can't get too much into "That never happened" "That always happened" "That sheldom happened" because the players will always try to exploit what they percieve as a positive "That always happened" while avoiding any negitive "that always happened" thus producing a whole new set of results that will be
"This somethimes happens"

In your basic never fought in the actual war naval battle we will see Kitikami engaged.

Kitikami never fired a torpedo in a surface battle.
Kitikami has twenty torpedos per side.
The crew of Kitikami might be trained above historic quality
The TF commander might be the highest rated leader for surface battle.

This ship will in some battles fire no torpedos
part of one side, all of one side, all of both sides.

No result will be historic. All results must be plausable. All results should be viewed more to the operational impact. (But no result can be proven correct or incorrect as there exists no example. All we can use is standard (judgmental) methods. (She had this many torpedos, they have this range, they do this damage, they hit this often)

Without the tactical animations having her present or not present at a battle might explain how a USN BB was sunk by a IJN TF containing 2 CL and 4 DD. With the present detail you'd see
"torpedos in the water" "torpedo hits BB North Carolina" repeat 5 times.

Concerning torpedos hitting a ship in drydock. Ignore this and consider that 40 Kate on raid carried 800KG bombs that are not present in game. At least one of these bombs did hit the drydock.
The ship did sustain damage. Also ships that were really hit in raid are passed over. It is the operational number that matters not the precise detail. How many BB does the PH strike sink or damage? (How many "other" type ships account for 1 BB?)

I haven't studied the Pearl Harbour attack in detail but weren't 3 USN BBs hit by the special "shallow depth" torps?

Or was I thinking of the film? :)
