Is it true that saved games for version 5.1 really not work with version 5.2 and 5.3? Thanks for any response.

You can move your save files to an out-of-game folder before you install the upgrade, and as long as the scenario involved is in the newer version, copy them back into the new save folder. Should work.
Retreat is NOT an option.
