Fire Rate -2?

Gary Grigsby’s War in the East: The German-Soviet War 1941-1945 is a turn-based World War II strategy game stretching across the entire Eastern Front. Gamers can engage in an epic campaign, including division-sized battles with realistic and historical terrain, weather, orders of battle, logistics and combat results.

The critically and fan-acclaimed Eastern Front mega-game Gary Grigsby’s War in the East just got bigger and better with Gary Grigsby’s War in the East: Don to the Danube! This expansion to the award-winning War in the East comes with a wide array of later war scenarios ranging from short but intense 6 turn bouts like the Battle for Kharkov (1942) to immense 37-turn engagements taking place across multiple nations like Drama on the Danube (Summer 1944 – Spring 1945).

Fire Rate -2?

Post by ool »

Looking at the Russian heavy mortar unit and see that the fire rate is listed as -2. Can someone please tell me what that means in real time rounds per whatever time period. My best guess for this monstrosity is about a round every 30-45 minutes. Also is there a chart anywhere that quantifies what the various fire rate ratings equate to in real time?

Thanks in advance for any and all replies.

Sorry this isn't in the manual anywhere but it is very simple: positive number mean rounds per minute and negative number mean minutes per round. Therefore the Russian 280mm mortar fires 1 round every two minutes.

The Rate of Fire in the device data base should not be confused with the rate of fire modifier in the ground element data base. Any ground element with a negative modifier has its ROF (from the device data base) reduced by that amount. The one exception is SPAs which have a positive ROF modifier to reflect their ability to come into action faster than their towed counterparts.

See post 55 tm.asp?m=4608655&mpage=2&key=

Firepower is much more complex than being discussed here.

jaw,

Your answer looks pretty good to me - would you say this is definitely correct ahead of the other theories?

In no message have I ever got any indications of time . Instead, the order of combat is wholly based on devices, ranges, and something engaging. I would expect if time were a factor ... some message level .. at least 7 would mark off time on a clock like “minutes 20... device X engages squad A” .. but again time is not displayed as a factor.

The manual says this about the RoF for ground elements.

'ROF and ACC: Modifier to a device's base rate of fire (ROF) and accuracy (ACC). ROF (Rate of Fire) and ACC (Accuracy) are modifiers. ROF is a negative modifier that is applied to vehicle mounted devices to reflect the restrictions of operating the device inside the vehicle. ACC is a positive modifier that increases the accuracy of the device to reflect both a more stable firing platform and superior optics. For example, from the game editor, the F-34 76mm gun has a ROF of 10. When mounted on a T-34, the modifier is set to -5, resulting in an effective ROF of 5.'

This seems really long winded and confusing even if it is strictly correct but I'm not sure it is. As I understand it it's simply how many rounds the device can get off in a minite, so taking into account the -x values discused here, would it not be simpler to say 'RoF (Rate of Fire) represents how many shots a device can fire in one minite. If the number is a negative value (i.e. -2) then it represents how many minites it takes to fire one shot.

There's no need to mention the base firing rate of a device as its never going to apply to the element it's used in. For instance the 76mm gun mounted on a T-34 is never, ever going to fire at 10 rpm.

ROF in game terms need to be some sort of mathematical value used to calculate how often in a given combat (at a given range) any device can fire.

If you simply state that ROF is the number of shots taken in a minute, what would this mean for any combat that would certainly take hours (and probably days) to complete? Obviously, a ROF of 10 shots pr minute does not mean the device can fire 600 shots/hour or 14.400 times/day in a combat taking 24 hours to complete.

My guess (as stated elsewhere) is that ROF is a number used to calculate the chance of a device getting to fire again in combat.

As to the exact formula, your guess is as good as mine.

Unfortunately publishing the the formula for this as in many other things is not going to happen. I was told when I took on rewriting the manual that formualas where not to be made available, just general descripion of what happens.

The standard military description of ROF is more or less as I said above. One description is

'Rate of fire is the frequency at which a specific weapon can fire or launch its projectiles. It is usually measured in rounds per minute (RPM or round/min), or rounds per second (RPS or round/s). Several different measurements are used.'

Note the word 'can'.
