Goblins on the doorstep

Post by MikeJ19 »

Having successfully slowed the Soviet subs moving towards the GIUK gap, it is time to get the HMS Revenge into play.

The orders did not give me too much information on the possible enemy units at play in this area. Only that they are likely to be Soviet subs.

Yes, your surface ships may be expendable, but take special care of HMS Matapan.
Although relatively toothless she has the best sonar of the surf escorts.

Good luck.

Don't bother with misdirection, the AI just doesn't make such advanced logic steps. Works in a full binary logic, if detects a contact of relevant type for its mission prosecutes it, if it's not of a relevant type ignores it (unless it has usable weapons against the contact, then it can take potshots at it, range and ROE permitting, but will not change course to do it). If it has no contacts of a relevant type, keeps patrolling on a random path (within patrol area).

The only misdirection that COULD work here is making a submarine reveal itself making noise or pinging. So as to give the enemy subs a GOBLIN contact other than the Revenge for them to prosecute.

Ancalagon,

Thanks for this. I will stick with a straight up plan!

Here is the plan. I have to set up the missions to match it.

I have played with the RoEs and doctrine a little and set up the missions. About time to hit start!

A caution on the ASW strike mission. I cannot recall the scenario but if they are from 3 different ships they may all launch on a contact. If you have biologics in the area you could run out of choppers really quick. In a scenario this small you may want to micro that or have just one on the mission and backfill him once he launches.

Mike,

Sometimes, even though the ROE for a side might be to not fire on unidentified ASW contacts, the default ROE for an ASW patrol mission (which I assume is what your helicopters are assigned to) is weapons free for ASW contacts. It's highly debated and the source of many false error reports, but for the time being, Mission ROE overrules Side ROE and possibly even Unit ROE. I would take a look at the ROE for the mission your helicopters are assigned to. Hope this helps.

Excroat3,

You are correct, the ASW RoE was set to Free. Makes sense, unless there are whales/fish in the area.

Thanks,
Mike

Perhaps change Auto evasion to NO. This has its risks but IIRC Boomers are very sensitive to any threat and it may be trying to evade the sub detected to the west.

Might be some sort of weird AI course plotting issue. Try re-plotting the Revenge's course, possibly? Also, you can find some clues as to what your sub is doing by looking at its Status (right side of screen, 1st "box" of info). Is it following a plotted course, engaged defensive, or tasked to a mission?
