TOAW IV without Steam (Resolved)

Post by golden delicious »

I've been using TOAW IV for a while, but never through Steam (although I have Steam). I just downloaded the latest patch for TOAW IV (4.1.0.21).

When I went to run the .exe, it gave me an error on a missing Steam DLL. I dutifully went and got a copy of this DLL from somewhere else and dropped it in the TOAW directory. I now get an even less helpful error message:

"The procedure entry point SteamInternal_CreateInterface could not be located in the dynamic link library C:\Program Files (x86)\Matrix Games\The Operational Art of War IV\Opart 4.exe."

This is the correct file path for my TOAW IV Exe. I tried a different copy of the DLL (one was from the internet and one was from another game) with the same result.

Do I have to reinstall TOAW IV via Steam?

Apparently you get this error if you update to .21 from an older version (before .20).

Better to download the full installer for .20 after following the instructions here:
tm.asp?m=4564492
(don't worry about the note at the start, it's fixed in .21)

In short: Uninstall the game first, including deleting the "Documents\My Games\The Operational Art of War IV" folder - but backup any mods and custom mods/ini/save files you use first.
Then install .20 full, patch to .21.

OK, that makes sense. I'm not good with instructions apparently.

You should be able to reach it on the link in my signature- can you not log in? There's not much going on; sporadic updates from Matt on GS4 and from me on Fall Grau, otherwise just Colin's political threads.

Thankyou kindly. In keeping with my policy on not following instructions I installed .20 over the top of .21 and it now runs fine. I'll let you know if I have any more problems.

No worries, glad it helped. BTW you really should install .21 last but each to their own I guess [:D]

I thought I had an account (it may have been an old email), how do you go about registering with TDG to login in the first place?

How do I uninstall the old version? There is no uninstall .exe in the program folder no uninstall shortcut and no uninstall option in Syystem/Apps.

It's in the menu when you click the windows icon in the lower left corner of your screen.

I have downloaded the game to a portable drive. But, when I try to run it on a computer without the game (i.e. work), I get the steam message. Do I have to put steam on the portable drive?

Regards,
Mark

Isn't there something done with the Windows registry of the machine you installed it from? If yes then not sure it would even work on another machine.
