Do you check your fleets in this ambush group for detection daily? Every notice a 1 dl and no enemy subs present?

I check. No DL.

Many times when I report sub activity near a port it's for a 1/1 or 1/0 DL which I know might only be a SigInt detection. Is that what you mean?

Yep, I am always curious what triggers sig int hits. I think the presence of submarines help trigger those hits.

A slow net may never catch the prey.

It will when they run upstream. In fact, a very large gunny sack with a large opening is great for catching them. Just put it in to stream or creek at a narrow location and then you have them. Get enough for smoking . . .

As far as information on subs go, in the book Run Silent, Run Deep if I remember correctly, the Japanese fishing boats would collect the floating garbage for intelligence purposes. That could also be a source of information that may or may not have made it into the game.
Seek peace but keep your gun handy.

I'm not a complete idiot, some parts are missing!

I think it is having your own forces in proximity to the enemy location that triggers an abstracted D/L hit, with the usual probability and chance calculations. For example, I believe it was Alfred who wrote (several years ago) that patrol aircraft and some float planes can increase the chance of detection because they are in the vicinity of the enemy and because they have radios and sometimes SigInt equipment to detect the strength and direction of enemy transmissions (radio or radar).
I think the increased chance of detection close to enemy shores is abstracted coastal traffic like fishing boats.

CHANGED OWNERSHIP

Overall
• No carrier sightings.

West Coast USA, Alaska, Hawaii
• Enemy sub activity near San Francisco, Johnston Island.

• All convoys report no contacts.

• Fleet refueling finished today but of course most ops points are used up. There is also an enemy submarine NNE of Johnston Island, so the fleet will stay put while the invasion convoys head toward the fleet to avoid detection. It will take about 3 days for the transports to get to the fleet, so maybe tanks will be topped off again (the oilers have plenty of fuel remaining on board).
